I don't know if it's true or fake, but in the first case I would not surprised: most of the videogame 'journalists' in my country are monkeys without ethics and guts. And people like this deserve 365 days per year of shitstorm.

Now that's shady. I think it highlights how forming our own opinions is important, and not parrot what others are saying. Reviews are a great guideline and indicate that this game is worth the money, but they're not the fucking gospel.

Sure, but coming from Polygon it just seems shady. They currently have NO credibility and shouldnt even be mentioned anywhere.

Sure, people wouldnt complain if they gave a 10/10 score, but that doesnt change the fact that they simply arent a credible reviewing outlet, so I dont get why they should be treated as such.

As I said a couple pages back, I've worked for publications in the Film/TV & Music industry before. I've seen publications give low scores or really high scores that deviate from the medium for the sake of getting hits or a reaction. It actually is a thing, believe it or not. The relationship between these publications and the industry is also a really complex/difficult thing. The best way to describe it is like the publishers/devs are related to you by blood. So if you shit on them, that next family get together will be awkward when you have to be in the same room as them. Note: I've never worked in the game industry, and it could be 100% different. I should also say that, not every publication follows the same practices.

People are right that publications aren't beholden to the publishers/devs. For the most part, if a site gives a terrible score, the publisher/dev still needs the publication in the long run. They still still need that site for future reviews and advertisement. That said, in my experience there was always an unspoken tension between sites and those in the industry. Often the reviewer was conscious of this, and you could tell when a publisher would get upset over a bad score. Perhaps this is why the game industry has always used the "7-10" scale, mostly ignoring the 0-6. Anyways, if all these sites are giving it a 10/10, I want to believe that they are genuine. They would have no reason to stroke the publishers, and even if they did - why not just give them a 9/10? 10/10 really puts up the credibility of the reviewer/site.

With regards to Polygon, no one knows enough about them to say they gave that score for the sake of reaction. I know that it happens in other industries. And personally, they have lost my trust as a reader. So I agree with your post, I think the issue more than anything is the gamer/readers mistrust of their site - not the score. The skepticism of the score, not because it deviates from the score you want it to have, but because it seems suspect given their past with reviews.

For fuck's sake, even with Polygon or the other few reviews with "bad" scores ;) , the game is reviewing incredibly well! Great news!

That's really upsetting. Is the revised review even his/her genuine opinion any more?

Please remove the Polygon review from the OP. You are already not linking to it, so do the right thing and remove it completely. Any establishment with such a clear agenda doesn't deserve to have their opinion acknowledged. Naughty Dog deserve to sit at the top of metacritic for making the game of the generation. It saddens me to my core that unprofessional click bait could destroy everything they have worked so hard to achieve and ruin what should be a day of celebration.

why hasn't anyone done a dramatic reading of this yet

The decade is barely three years old, a little premature.

(Or is it two years? I never know, I still don't think the millennium should have been 2000)

I believe a decade is 1-10, 11-20, etc. but people usually use the term to refer to the say the 90's now

his quote though he's probably misusing it in the other way it sometimes is which to refer to the past ten years

would have been more accurate if he said generation instead of decade

Our Derrick? Isn't he perma'd?

believe he's back in August

it's only page 48 right now >_>

Intro is better than Infinite?

Well it must be really something

Huh? Was this really said?!

Like someone else mentioned, I had a fleeting interest in this before today (UC is good, but...ehh...i didn't go nuts over it). This universal acclaim has swayed me, though. I'll give credit (and money) where its due.

read the GameSpot review and the score doesn't really seem to match up with what he said (and the goods & bads) it really reads like a game that would get a 9.0 :-/
It's a nice lesson on arbitrariness, and why the entire topic of discussion here is ultimately unimportant to the individual experience of playing a game. Read the Gamespot review absent a score, and then guess what the score is- it could be anything from a 7.0 to a 10 in my eyes. It's all about how much the overall experience transcends the flaws that might be present to the tastes of the individual reviewer. That's why even the 10s (a "perfect" score- there is no way the game could be rated higher even if literally flawless) discuss flaws and rough spots in their text.

Ya, I'm expecting to put it somewhere around a 9.0, personally. Just a meaningless guess. Same score I would give Bioshock Infinite and it's my game of the gen.

Really? Over Spec Ops?
Trollface

Personally my vote goes to the Souls Series.

Well that's dodgy as fuck. Hopefully someone is investigating

The consensus on /v/ in a nutshell

Almost all the top reviewed games on this gen are shit. Only Galaxy is worth it. So I get where he's coming from.

Been around this block far too many times to let this kind of critical reception influence my judgement. Will probably read impressions in the coming weeks, and check it out later if I think it's my kind of game.

Why release the PS4 when perfection has already been reached? Let's shut it all down.

Plus, knowing Naughty God they just won't release a PS3 game on PS4.
It's against their policy, they will release games on PS4, but 100 % PS4 games, not ports or "remakes" hah

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...

Yep, I am not even saying that the game necessarily deserves all those 10's. Maybe its just a 9 or 8 for me personally after I played it, but all that stuff that added up for Polygon is just too much to take anything by them seriously anymore.

Honestly, these are the same game reviewers that thought Bioshock Infinite was deep and intellectual. I wouldn't be surprised if they are just easily impressed.

Yeah man. It'd be like if someone went into Vita threads and shit on it constantly or something! I guess that does mean you can recognize pettiness when you see it!

How petty of me for discussing Vita's sales and prospects in threads related to sales and Vita's prospects. I humbly beg your forgiveness.

Again. The Maniac review has spoilers for the opening of the game do not read it if you do not want to be spoiled!
