or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Realize This Assgrab is Delicious
If you think about it, there are three interests Microsoft had to balance here.

They wanted to serve publishers who were complaining about sales of used games.

They wanted to serve retailers who would be displeased if they didn't have retail games to sell.

They decided that taking away the consumer's playback rights was the easiest thing to sacrifice in order to please the other two.

Honestly if your OK with this then fine buy the system and games but I think GAF should have a policy where if you buy into this shit now then later on you cannot post a thread whining and bitching about how you paid good money for a game and then couldn't play because the DRM server check failed or the servers went down or it's stormy out and now you lost Internet and you can't play a game to kill time cause guess what no check in. If you do post a thread like this after knowing all these shitty policies up front it should be an insta ban on your GAF account. I bet member count would drop real quick lol.

Also I did my part and shared this on various social media sites, etc. #NoDRM #teamAmir0x

Your funny ideas about how to post infer even funnier ideas about how site moderation works.

I didn't realize everything I loved about gaming was selling used games and playing stuff offline.

If you just enjoy quick, disposable entertainment you'll be fine. Just remember, that we have tons of LTTP threads for games that are decades old. Some of us care about the preservation of our hobby. If your only concern is the flavor of the week, this thread may not be for you.

To what end? Why is this thing such a huge deal to you that it has gotten you so upset? Just let it pass and stop gnashing your teeth.

Oh whoops, pardon me, I've slipped into playing your game.

I'm sure that you think being clever works out great for you.

I'm not gnashing nor upset. But this level of drama from the OP thinking he's doing some kind of public service announcement because a video game console is coming out with DRM that he doesn't agree with is madness.

Nobody knows how the prices will be on next gen digital stores. What if they end up being more flexible like Steam? Best not to make up your mind on speculation.

You bet it ain't gonna be cheaper than 59.99. If you think otherwise you are delusional my friend.

What I did above is exactly what you've been doing to others. Painting them in a light that makes them look crazy or irrational and therefore not worth listening to. It's a tactic viral marketers use to discredit what people say. It's not a good thing to do at any rate.

I'd like to think I was a bit more polite and composed than that, but I guess you're open to your own interpretation.

im jus joshing you, I like that you made the thread, I like that you made it in a wacky fashion, and I like that people are spiraling out of control in here

And he has the nerve to say people look stupid. That's why I wondered whether he's one of those "Decepticons" Bish talked about.

Oh...THAT'S what you mean.

Ha.

Yeah. I'm a Microsoft plant.

I'd be willing to wager I'm in the top ten percent on GAF that's been fucked hardest by Microsoft this current gen.

I will not be hyping an Xbone any time soon.*

*short of them announcing a HD Monster Hunter, new X-Com or Jagged Alliance exclusive for launch.

Well that will be pretty damn brilliant if the mods dig into my posting history and deem me a Microsoft influence peddler and ban me for such.

He's acting severely childish, to be sure. It's a fact companies will hire community managers/public affairs folks to mitigate potential backlash and considering the size of GAF, those people exist here. It's not conspiracy, it's fact.

But calling anybody with a dissenting opinion a plant doesn't help any and is equally childish. But then you read stuff like this from new posters...

Didn't read. Still buying Xbox day one.

...and you begin to wonder about the intentions of people.

This Xbox One news is indefensible. There is nothing good about it from the consumer's perspective. If you defend it, you are part of the problem and doing your small part to ruin console gaming for everyone else.

I can agree with this part being an issue.

I can't wait for Sony to give those publishers and retailers a giant middle finger when they reveal their plans for no DRM next week, as Jack Tretton pauses in the middle of the conference to hoist an average gamer on his shoulders and lead the entire convention center into a rousing rendition of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

This is going to be the E3 we tell our children about.

Even if MS addressed every single issue listed in the OP, they still would have the weaker hardware by a considerably large margin, and that is the deal breaker for me.

Agreed, it was probably a bit over the top, but I think it accurately represents the feelings from that DRM reveal thread. I still stand by it though, and plan to do my part this weekend by posting some copies of that flyer. I've been cultivating a collection for decades, and was disgusted and taken aback by today's news. I meant it when I said we deserve better.

You know... all I can really think about is how this is going to start severly hampering the image of neogaf as a community if the OP and others continue to make posts/threads about this kind of stuff. People will eventually lose interest in the forum if they're going to be "bashed" for purchasing a system.

Microsoft has made this information available, it says so on the image, and do people keep making posts about this. If you have no interest in buying the console, then dont.

Take simcity. I've been having a great time with the game, i dont need to be told I made a stupid decision to buy a game I enjoy because there's DRM. Do I agree with DRM? no, do i still want to play these games? yes.

With 10 members of your family, with accounts on your console.

I cant believe they even list that as a feature "If you live in the same house as someone and have an account on the same console then you can play the same game as then!...just like you always could"

Microsoft has made this information available, it says so on the image, and do people keep making posts about this. If you have no interest in buying the console, then dont.

So once information is available we shouldnt discuss it? Seems like an odd metric to hold a discussion board to

Games and functionality.

What functionality, exactly? You excited to pull up your fantasy league stats during the big game? Browse IE on half your screen while you play CoD? I mean seriously, what fucking functionality? That may have been an argument this current gen but the PS4 is matching XBL feature for feature (exception for the TV shit).

People like you are ruining this for everyone. Absolutely despicable.

Is this kind of trolling not bannable? I mean, this is clearly just instigating volatile forum behavior, lol. Unbelievable.

Edit: No one cares what I had to say :( I thought I made some valid observations and points...

Yeah, people who have negative opinions about companies should really just keep that to themselves, lest the valued NeoGAF brand be tarnished.

I think all of the policies they announced are logical extensions of the fact that this is a digital-only console. The "retail" titles, such as they are, are like Steamworks games. It's not a retail+digital console, it's a digital-only console. I mean, imagine if a competitor to Steam popped up that had all of these policies. It'd be fairly standard--in some respect forward-thinking (being able to transfer a game you own to a friend, even once, is better than what Steam has right now; being able to trade in at select retailers is better than what Steam has now for both the retailer and the customer), in other respects a little behind the curve (offline mode being a 24 hour limit) I don't personally have a problem with digital only, I've got 600 games on Steam. And I'm generally a pretty future-proof kind of guy, none of my computers have optical drives anymore. I use Dropbox for everything. I love tablets I'm not someone who typically needs to be encouraged to adopt new tech or who worries about trading off the stability of current options for the cutting edge of new options.

But here are the problems:
1) No one views these policies as an advantage in any digital-only platform. They're a necessary evil. And they're one that's overcome with sweeteners. One sweetener is pricing. In Steam that's manifested in a few ways--frequent and steep sales on the whole catalogue, and the ability for developers to produce unlimited keys for free (and thus for third party resellers to sacrifice margin for volume and offer discounts). Will Xbox One games be $35 to pre-order? Will they drop to $5 within 6 months? I doubt it.

2) Digital-only PC platforms emerged in response to the decline of retail. Retail has not declined for consoles. It's still there. The Xbox One's direct competitors will have retail space. And the direct competitors will not necessarily have these policies. Maybe Microsoft ends up correctly predicting the future and riding the wave in advance, but it seems like Microsoft's competitors are healthy enough that this is too much too soon.

3) There exists no digital-only platform that requires an ongoing membership fee (or that encourages an ongoing membership fee). Ongoing membership fees tend to be for unlimited, all-access type services like Netflix--or even in the more limited form, Playstation Plus, or discount programs like Amazon Prime or Costco membership. It's true that Gold exists today, but today there's a platform that doesn't necessarily need the kind of sweeteners that the One will need.

So, I guess my conclusion is that given that we now know that Xbox One is a digital-only, not digital-first system, the policies are fairly unremarkable and the next question becomes how Microsoft will blunt these inherent limitations of digital-only systems and show advantages.

I think this is a (really) good post and deserves to be seen again. it reflects my view anyways. i certainly don't think the xbone crosses a line in the sand... so beyond that, it's just another product that's either worth my money/time or isn't.

discuss it? yeah, there are several threads for this already, go discuss it already. Do we need people to tell us to advocate and share this image with others? hell no, especially on neogaf where everyone already knows.

The best some people can say is "it doesn't affect me because I don't buy used! lolz!"

Because what is the one single advantage for consumers?

Even if I had never bought or sold a used game in my life, I'd like the option to buy or sell used.

Even if my internet had never gone down since 1998, I'd still like the option to play offline.

Even if I look great naked and don't care if marketing and/or the NSA was spying on me through the Kinect, I'd still like the option to turn it off.

Posted image on my facebook account. I was a HUGE original XBox fan. Day one purchaser and one of the original TeamXbox posters.

I thought Microsoft would bring an important change to console gaming, and they did.

Now...this isn't the Microsoft I was behind back in 1999. These guys scream Balmer all over the place.

If I spend $60 to play a game, I'd like to think that even though in actuality I've only purchased a license to use, I could pretend that i owned something that I could in turn sell to someone else to get additional return on investment. Oh well. Times a changing.

Is this kind of trolling not bannable? I mean, this is clearly just instigating volatile forum behavior, lol. Unbelievable.

Isn't telling people that still want to buy the system "Fuck you!" bannable? (I could be wrong) There has got to be at least 100 of those in that other thread

Oh please! You know how many different topic threads are in this forum? Somehow criticizing Microsoft is bad for the community at large all of a sudden. It's almost E3 for chrissakes!
