PSN Plus needed to play online!!!

It wasa a good run, but I'll trade never playing a game online again, for for the ability to sell and buy preplayed games.
Anytime.

PS4 - $399 + $60 (for mp) = $459
Xbox - $499 + $60 (for mp, netflix, etc) = $559

The maths don't lie here. It's still $100 difference.

I'm already a Plus subscriber since I love the free games, but this sucks :/ I'll hold it against them but it wont keep me from getting a PS4 though.

If its online gaming behind the pay wall... than where do you think the F2P ONLINE games are going to go?
I dread they'll be there, I just hope that Sony at least allows exceptions where it makes sense, and F2P is one such area I'd think, or hope.

PS+ gives a PLENTY good reasons. MONTHLY games across three platforms. DISCOUNTS. etc.

There is no reason not to have it, even if online multiplayer wasn't tied to it.

That's the scary thing though. Because online is now behind a paywall, Sony will become complacent with the service and offer less free games and discounts because "gamers will pay for PS+ anyways to play online so who needs the other stuff".

Kinda already get PS+ anyway, so I don't really mind, can't complain.

If I didn't have PS+, well yeah, sure, I would, maybe.

Just because they aren't doing activation checks and requiring internet access doesn't mean that they won't try to at least hinder reselling or taking a cut of it with online passes.

Did Sony explicitly say they were tying in online multiplayer features with Playstation Plus or is each game a case by case basis?

In any case, the no-DRM announcement was a really clever way to rile up the crowd and divert attention while they slipped and wizzed by the PS+ requirement.

The games they've offered to SCEA members have been pretty bad until this month. It's not worth it if you don't play the games they give you. As far as discounts, they don't mean anything if a person doesn't buy.

It sucks but hey 2/3 isn't so bad right?

This and the meh launch lineup makes the wii U more likely tho.

But I want to support sony for not having DRM...

Exactly. It's almost like I am in an XBL thread. Very strange to heard PS fans, I am speaking generally here, who held up free online gaming as a huge benefit and selling point of the PS3 and mocked the 360 because of it, and now doesn't matter?

I don't get this either. It's all we heard this console generation but now it doesn't matter cause PS+ gives you free games. Or it doesn't matter because you have it already (I'm a PS+ subscriber).

Has it been actually confirmed or is this just poorly worded?

I wonder this too? I watched the conference and i don't remember them saying something like this. I need me some quotes for a DEFINITE confirmation of this, because this is pretty big.

That's what has pissed me off really. Since I already pay a sub for one and that's coming to PS4 and an added extra cost too, plus there are even more costs in game as well. It's just added crap. Plus PC players won't have it and PS3 player won't either, makes no sense for PS4 players to have an added payment.

Guys. You knew this has been in the works for years now. I know "its $5" is a bad argument.

BUT ITS FIVE DOLLARS.

I think it's hilarious that PS fans are trying to justify this. This was the biggest problem with Xbox Live. It's a ridiculous decision by Sony.

I would have preferred a 499 console with free multiplayer.
I'm Playstation all the way and I agree with this.

It was at the bottom of a video slide with Yoshida during the conference, but we haven't heard anything from the actual mouths of Sony guys in detail, which is who I want to hear from. If they promise subscription bundles or something that might make it a bit easier to swallow.

Well Sony has done a good job getting people to rationalize that this should ever be a tradeoff in the first place.

There should never be restrictions on the ability to sell and buy used games. There's no room for negotiation here, it's just not acceptable.

There should never be a paywall for p2p multiplayer. It's not acceptable.

Not everyone thinks of it as PS4 vs Xbone.

To me, it's PS4 vs new graphics card.

Shit, I could buy a new card today, upgrade in a few years and still have it cost less than PS4 + Plus.

€499 with free online would've been sooo much better. Stupid decision.
And the so called "free" games you get with PS+ is only free as long as you pay for the service.

No DRM and $399 price is great. PS+ is awesome. Having to pay to play online is not.

This was pretty much guaranteed to happen though. Sony saw the money Microsoft made by charging for online and wanted in on it.

I'm partly to blame. I was an XBL gold member for 5 years.

I think Sony was always destined to charge for multiplayer. MS made a ridiculous amount of money on Live and it makes perfect business sense to follow their footsteps...it sucks but it's the reality of the situation

It's a big deal in my case because me and two of my brothers use my PS3. We are not getting three subscriptions...

At least we'll always have free online on PC.

Where do you get this idea from?

Because MS does the same freaking thing with XBL Gold and proved that people are willing to pay a yearly subscription for just online multiplayer, and Sony knows that. They could phase out all the other PS+ benefits gradually and still have people subscribing for the online multiplayer, which worries me.

I don't see online multiplayer being put behind Plus as bad because it is already a great service, I see it as bad because I think Sony will cheapen the service once they get everyone onboard.

The beginning of the end

5 bucks a month isn't gonna hurt my pockets, but this spells trouble for the future in my eyes. Buttering us up and easing us into something far worse later on

I don't think paying for online is good either, but it was pretty much the endpoint of the PS+ experiment. It didn't surprise me at all. I don't blame anyone for opting out of paid multi, but it's a better value than Gold for sure.

NOPE...NOT PAYING FOR PS+

PS4 will be my single player console

Xbox One will be my multiplayer console

Just like this gen.

This hurt bad and i'm a ps plus member who mostly plays single player games. I understand why they locked multiplayer behind a pay wall but, it sucks so bad it almost ruined all the good news they had. I wonder how this effects all those free to play games coming to ps4 will they be locked behind the pay wall? They hit so many good notes with the price point and no drm thing but, this was just a downer.
