exactly they had the last 7 years to come up with the next installment and they take a spinoff and name it the next FF

Stop talking rubbish.
You can try and smear the game as being 'a spinoff' all you like, yet since its inception, as stated by Nomura, they'd been debating whether to go ahead and rename it XV because of its ambitious nature. They're not just taking a turd and polishing it up and pushing it out as the next big thing. The XIII name would have sullied what they were doing with the game, why would they not rename it after the XIII franchise was a critical and commercial flop compared to past FF games?
The scope of the game warranted a move to next generation systems so there's no reason that calling it XV isn't justified just because it's an action RPG.

I was reading talk about it not being a 'true' FF game earlier, some people are ridiculous.

No they didn't.

Listen, they had problems this gen, they've already acknowledged that and can't go back in time to make things differently. Their HD/console level development has been almost completely tied by XIV2.0 so they've released a couple of extra XIII games in the meanwhile (since they can reuse assets quite a lot and could quickly move to full development) while continuing on some level of pre-development/early development on new games with small teams. FFXV has been announced a long time ago so when they decided to do it for next-gen, it only made sense that it would be the first next-gen game to be given a big team to work on it.

Besides, FFVsXIII was never much of a spin-off, it was always a project that was developed like it's a mainline title, only with different gameplay mechanics. That's where the whole name FF Vs. XIII comes from, it was a game that was made to rival a mainline entry, so it only makes sense now to rename it FFXV.

Besides #2: it's not like it's not possible that they also have another mainline FF in development but it's simply not as far along in development as FFXV is because they really need to finish Versus already, so they don't want to repeat past mistakes and announce games too early, which would annoy gamers.

The new Stella really bums my hype. :<
It's still as strong, but I'm sad to have lost one of the best designed FF characters as of yet and have her replaced by a generic blonde... WHY Square, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!
I agree, I especially liked her haircut better before, but there's still hope her new design'll grow on me when I see more of her.

Regarding sequels, I'd be fine with it so long as this game is its own complete story and nothing like the XIII sequels have been.

This! I won't mind prequels/sequels as long as they don't pull the shit they did with XIII. One of the reasons I just couldn't care for the XIII sequels was that XIII had a perfect ending. XIII-2 just felt like it retconned the ending.

I hope the sequels don't end up being some more campy stuff and please no more time traveling elements.

Also with the sequel talk, I guess they'll milk FFXV as much as possible and we'll see FFXVI for the ps5. Welcome to one FF series per new system :'D

JK i hope SE don't do this

Guys do you like this game because the main character is Noctis?
What if is the same game, but with Lightning, you will still like it?

Just realized this...

Promto is probably a "summon" or special moveset here.

Its two different scenes you see him doing this in, so looks like you can "call" Promto over to shoot an enemy? thats what im getting from this:

I mentioned this earlier in the thread. He does basically the same thing in the gameplay trailer as well. Pretty safe to assume it's something context sensitive.

We also see the friends autonomously running around. I'm fairly certain that what we're seeing is that you can call them in for an assist during combat.

I just can't believe the last Final Fantasy game that can be played on PS3 is Lightning Returns. Thats not the way to send a console to its last days. Seriously, if MGS V can be on this gen and next, but this can't? Surely it can be scaled down to make it work. I'm really just having a hard time understanding this.

Anyways, I'll still get it on PS4 if that is all that is available.

Did you know that FFIX was considered a spin-off (Final Fantasy Gaiden), too, at first and was revealed as a new mainline only a few months before its release? ;) Stuff like this happens all the time.

To everyone hating on the huge departure: please don't try stifling innovation or change just because of idealized nostalgia. I LOVE the old classic FFs, too, but I can also see their shortcomings today, like kitsch/melodrama or button-mashing most of the time, except boss fights (Famassu explained it perfectly), and still appreciate them. I don't want another 25 years of the same old, just repackaged.
People who want the FFs "like the old ones" should play Lost Odyssey (or The Last Story - at least in regards of characters/story, not gameplay), which are basically what old FFs would be like with new graphics. The only difference is, they aren't called Final Fantasy. If you didn't like them, well, then you probably wouldn't like another new FF like that. At that point you should realize that you just love the memories of playing them and won't ever have the same magic experience again.

I'm really, really excited for this new game and have high hopes that SE can still do it, now that they're seemingly getting out of this current-gen mess slowly but surely :)

It's funny. This game is probably the most deserving of being a numbered title due to it's ambitious nature. Hell, if VIII and XIII can be part of the main entries, anything can...

Yeah. FFXIII was self contained and never needed sequels to tell more of the story. Ironically it was Versus developmental hell that made SE create a triology.

I thought it was because the development of XIII was really troubled and they didn't even break even on dev cost.

Yup. Well, not sure about breaking even on the dev cost but they wanted to maximize profits by reusing assets and resources and recoup costs for XIII and other games SE had. And you know... XIV sort of.... bombing. lol.

I'm kind of glad all that bad shit happened to SE, moving this to next gen systems allows it to reach a whole new level of potential.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would look like this, to exceed 7 years worth of wild expectations is impressive.

I was expecting ARR to tank for SE to realize the shit they were in. Glad they realized beforehand.

If there's any FF deserving of a mainline number it is definitely this.

You leave VIII alone!

Well, that is possible but I really don't think they thought of that idea until they saw the ww sales of XIII and then saw XIV bomb so bad. I figured they saw making a XIII-2 as a way to patch the damage of the recost of XIV and also keep their 'release a new game ever 1.5 years' philosophy.

The first game did not really have the setup for a trilogy imho.

That's dangerous thinking though. SE may not have been able to recover from hitting rock bottom the way their economy is going....

Obviously the XIII trilogy wasn't planned initially. Regardless, it wasn't because of the Versus development hell.

If you can have an FF game with only women playable, you can have an FF game with no women playable.

roflpwnt.

I've been gaming for about 25 years now, across most systems and all genres, but I've never played a Final Fantasy game and I have very little experience with JPRGs in general.

That said, after watching the cinematic and gameplay videos for this game, I am really excited for it (for some reason). It just looks really moody and slick, and I can even appreciate the cool hairdos associated with this type of game :p

It's hard to give people the benefit of the doubt...I kept on saying to just be patient though. I was STILL astonished and floored by the presentation.

Yes, hopefully they don't go that same route at all. I'm a little hopeful that won't happen though since I'd imagine they don't want the same thing to happen to this as did with the XIII sequels.

I was thinking about that as well and it is a bit worrisome.

Yet XV won't be running solely on Luminous as I understand so I think we are going to see XVI being the first one to do so and I'd expect that will be the last mainline title of the PS4. Hopefully we get Itou on it.

This game ain't coming out anytime soon, lol.

Not until late 2014 or 2015.

This. But hopefully we'll be getting more updates on a somewhat more regular basis as opposed to once every couple years with a trailer.

Hey I liked FFVIII. :(

That really is a love it or hate it game, isn't it?

I posted this yesterday but the thread got locked.

In regards to the all boys thing, I always try to rationalize and play devil's advocate so hear me out on the following. I'm not sexist at all btw.

I think at its core XV is still Versus XIII. It's going for that royal hierarchy idea but in a modern/contemporary setting. In addition it appears that they're going for a group of male friends that are really close but at the same time act as bodyguards for the MC Noctis. Is it really surprising then that all the guards are male and all of Noctis' close friends are guys? I know we all have guy and girl friends but when hanging out and stuff I don't think it's uncommon for guys to be among guys.

People need to get over this "no women" stuff.
If the story calls for it, I honestly don't care. I'd rather have a well developed cast than women just shoved in for the sake of it, or, even worse, for the sake of eye candy.

What Nomura and his team are doing doesn't affect what another team could be doing for another Final Fantasy game. Bear in mind, like you said, this is technically a project from years and years ago. It's not like SE doesn't have other people who can work on another FF project whilst this one is getting the brunt of the attention.

This game ain't coming out anytime soon, lol.

Not until late 2014 or 2015.
Being targeted internally for 2014, and they're apparently doing well at the moment, so let's hope they stick with that. If this delays, then other things delay and that would suck. I want to play this sooner rather than later too.

Also, still can't get used to new Stella. Been a while, and I don't think I'll take to the new design. He should have stuck with the old one. She looks more fake.

I support this, let's nip this waifu shit in the bud.

Seriously. There is nothing worse than a forced character who's only purpose is to be there/be there and be eye candy.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Kagari and Emitan (Billiechu) are going to confuse me.
