Xbox One to only work in certain countries at launch

Asia has to wait a year!? Not a few months but a full year!? Wow, MS is just handing those territories to Sony on a silver platter. I mean, at least put up a fight in those territories!

Translation: MS implied x, so they confirmed x, and MS can possibly enforce an IP check, so, they will do it and the console is therefore useless and no one can create an account outside of their own country, because MS is pure evil.

Tell me again, how this is not assuming the worst.

From MS themselves:

Xbox One Requirements:

Requires broadband internet (ISP fees apply), a Microsoft account and an account on Xbox Live in an Xbox One-supported Xbox Live country/region, and 720p or higher HDMI-compatible TV. To receive live TV via broadcast or cable, supported receiver device (television tuner or cable/satellite set top box) with HDMI output and HDMI cable required (all sold separately).

Where are people assuming anything?

This doesn't even have anything to do with a country NOT supporting XBL - the Xbox One will not work in a country that supports XBL if it's not green on that map.

Yeah, the wording is oddly specific if it were to mean anything else (even though they will probably reconsider their stance). There's a defense force for everything, though.

Blocking games from specific regions until their official release is fucking retarded, but a non-world wide staggered release is the norm for console releases.

And I doubt Microsoft would have a development studio in Osaka, if they weren't releasing in Japan. Whether it's this year or not is certainly a valid question, but it's definitely going to come at some point to the region. I'm willing to bet they announce something at Tokyo Game Show.

Wait what? is this real? I just don't understand what kindof of reality Microsoft are living in anymore. Why don't they want people to be able to use their product?

Absolutely incredible. This has got to be the most ill conceived and consumer hostile console ever made.

I hope this fails so MS can learn a lesson about restricting user options and freedoms.

You reaaaally think MS is gonna learn a lesson from this?

If anything they'll just try harder with these draconian measures.

But hey, at least Sony will be able to capitalize on this mistake!

Nice, I can't take the Xbox One (that I won't buy) with me when I deploy because I'll be in a country that MS hasn't given me the privilege to play their games in.

And ya'll said the Third Console Curse doesn't exist.
Microsoft just took the curse, spit on it, stepped on and laughed at it thus enraging the gaming deities. The sell this thing in 20 countries and still spit out they could sell as many consoles for the industry to reach a billion users? Are there even a billion living souls in those 20 countries combined? Ive never seen a circus like this before.

So wait, if you live in one of the non-supported countries, you just have to register an XBL account in another territory and thus activate your games on the XBL of that country?

If this is true then damn.

NO
I'm reading it far worse than that.

If you live in Australia and purchase an American Xbox One and an American copy of Halo 17, it will not work in your console, period - because your IP address is Australian.
SPECULATION you'll get an error message "Sorry this game can not be activated in your region" - at least that's how I'm reading it.

Aw man, I'm really starting to outright enjoy these fuckups.

I mean, there's fucking your customers over, and then there's fucking your customers over, MS style. It's on a whole new level.

Well wouldn't it be illegal to actively encourage gamers to make fake-accounts?

Things like:

Is the only thing they can say. There are different policies in every country so you couldn't play some games legally if those aren't classified.

Is it possible to create a fake-account? Yeah. Can you create one with the One? Not sure yet.

Why would it be illegal?

They're not fucking their customers over, because the people in those countries aren't their customers. The only people they're fucking over are themselves.

This just dawned on me but MS has literally forfeit any and all developing/emerging markets to which Sony has been actively pushing. I would think they would go after them seeing Sony success but I guess not

This feels so shitty.

I was already bummed with the Xbone always online, seeing as I have a really bad internet connection, sometimes it doesnt work and it tops at 1Mbps :/

Now, it wont work in my country due to...being a poor country?

they should just sell that thing in the US and call it USbox One.

welp, there goes my forza box :/

Batteries the CRISIS!
Here's a perfect example of how this could be a problem.

US Service members who are station in Japan get their internet from Japanese ISPs. If MS is blocking this via IP address and failing the activation because of it, anyone who buys a US Xbox from their base exchange will not be able to use it (since the system will detect their IP as being in Japan).

quick, someone tell Kotaku that Microsoft isn't supporting the troops

Ok, I'll give you that.

Let's argue for no reason, though: I posit that the people that get fucked by this IP block would be valuable customers if MS would only let them, so in a way they're still fucking their customers over! Ha! I was right all along! You suck! I rule! .... Sorry.

How does this make any sense? MS would willingly lose an install base like that? That just baffles me. In 10 years from now, how would they be able to sell to those people? Internet will eventually become a standard in poorer countries, and they would rather just essentially say, "fuck em'" now? I'm very surprised. If I were to take a picture of my PS3 and 360 games library right now, the ratio is almost 5 to 1 in favor of 360. I easily have 35+ 360 games, and 6 or 7 PS3 games. I have no plans on picking up an Xbox One. My internet connection is fine and I make over 60k a year, I don't even buy used games, but such arrogance is really unappealing to me as a person, not just a gamer. So disappointing.

lol this is pretty funny, seems like MS now has a reality bubble like Apple has...

We are commited to Japan, sorry but your region won't be available this year.... not even in 1 year, maybe never... WTF?

Well they just deserve to lose this time and baddly, not having any of my $ now , or maybe in 1 year or maybe never... most probably the last

LOL, so if I buy an xbone and then get a job or move for some reason to a non-green country I can't play my single player games anymore, or import new ones?

OMG this has become completely hilarious.

If Xb one is not a success, why would they double down on policies that helped make it unsuccessful? Why would shareholders tolerate that type of behavior? what's the benefit?

MS has never really been about that. When they fail - and I'm not assuming this will fail, just kinda hoping it will - they usually rework and adjust course. take a look at what they're doing with windows 8.1, backtracking on some poor design decisions made early in development that confused users.

Honestly, I expect XB one to less popular than 360. Sony is going to be much better competition and MS has minimized the number of people around the world who would care about the console. Their only hope is that the theoretical American gamer/Live TV obsessive/fantasy football duder who wants the machine will spend enough money on DLC and video and stuff to offset the people who buy a PS4 this time around.

Black_Stride

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
Dylan Cuthbert from Q Games just tweeted that the Xbox One may be IP region restricted / locked too, for fucks sake.

So those who are big Xbox fans (fortunately not me) can't even import a fucking console and play imported games! You'd need to setup a VPN or something (and that's a lot easier on a PC than it is a console)
Madness, just madness.

Well now!

Ive been an Xbone fan this whole time.....but this.....this changes everything.

Guessing im gonna be saving myself $100 till MS decides i can play my games wherever the fuck i want.

This is exactly what the problem is, only it applies to anyone whose permanent home is in one country but they now reside in another, or to anyone who wants to play games in a language other than the primary one in the country where they reside. So if you're a Chinese-English bilingual, and you live in Hong Kong, you're fine (in 2014 when the Xbone launches there) because HK games include Chinese and English. But that same bilingual person will be locked out of the Chinese half of their game collection if they live in the US, where games are in English and maybe Spanish and French.

IP-based region locking is completely ridiculous. If you're moving abroad, don't bother bringing your Xbone -- it'll be a giant paperweight.

I live in the US. I only buy games that are in English and come out in the US. Why would I care about region locking?

I imported many PS1 and Saturn games. Most memorably, I played through SOTN and somehow about 20 hours of FF8 in Japanese. I played the hell out of Radiant Silvergun. I imported a DC from some assholes (not NCX) for about $600.

However, times have changed. 99.9% of decent foreign games are ported to various languages. Games usually release day and date in multiple languages. Systems certainly do. Those who care about region locking are few and very far between. Out of all the consumer unfriendly things about the bone, that is the last one to worry about.
