PS4 disc game install

Sorry if this has been asked/answered, I couldn't find an answer.

Can we do a full disc install similar to the XB3 (or 360) or will it just stream it of the disk with some HDD cache? I hope for a full install option - for the performance, quieter and less stress on the optical disk drive.

Since it doesn't require an online check it seems, I wouldn't count on being able to do an install without the disc being in to verify it. I do believe though that the games do fully install and just check the disc to verify, so maybe that is what you need to know?

It automatically installs to the hard drive while you're playing. You still need the disc to play. So basically it's how 360 installs work, only it's not optional.

They already said it'll install in the background while you play. So the disc will only be for verification.

I think it'll be like the PS3.
Tho, I don't see a reason why they don't do a 360 full game install-disc only to start system as well.

Game installs on the HDD but the disc has to be in the system for it to work. BD drives read speeds are still too slow for them to stream off of it.

The PS4 has a system called PlayGo that caches all reads of the disc to the hard drive. If no reads are being done, PlayGo will gradually copy the entire game based off of developer defined priority.

Like Xbox 360? I wouldn't be surprised if it were mandatory, people were raging against installs on X1 but I think/hope that had more to do with the fact they apparently (and later confirmed) to be also tied to your account/system, whereas forcibly installing but still needing the disc is an issue already there on PS3 and arguably necessary for decent performance anyway.

Although it probably WOULD be smart to just install all gameplay data and stream voices/videos off as needed instead.

Well, this is interesting. Thanks for bringing that up.

Yeah, I'm fine with the disc in the tray, like the 360 does for install.

So that sound good if that is whats going to happen.

:O thanks

Eurogamer says all games will be installed while you play, just like the Xbone. I'm assuming you'll still need the disc in the drive for PS4 since there's nothing that binds it to your account/system.

Similar to the Xbox One, a 500GB hard drive has been chosen for internal storage - not exactly surprising bearing in mind that these units currently offer the best value in terms of gigs per £/$. However, the difference is that as with the PlayStation 3 the unit can be replaced with any hard drive of your choosing (and presumably that includes SSDs too). There's a point of deviation with Xbox One here, as the hard drive in the Microsoft console is not user-replaceable. Here, the additional USB ports are used for external devices that boost overall system storage capacity. Bearing in mind that the Blu-ray drive on both systems gives up to 50GB of potential storage for games and that installation is mandatory on both consoles, that hard drive could fill up very, very quickly.

We also have final confirmation on the optical drive utilised - a 6x CAV Blu-ray unit. CAV stands for Constant Angular Velocity, meaning that the disc spins at the same rate no matter where the reading head is. This means that data contained on the outer edge of the disc is read in much faster than that contained on the inner portion. This was much more of a big deal for current-gen games (which mostly run from disc) as opposed to next-gen where hard drive install is mandatory. In order to make the experience as friction-free as possible, games will load the absolute minimum and then "stealth install" the remainder onto the hard drive in the background as you play.

Installs the whole game while you're playing.

So, what we do as the game accesses the Blu-ray disc, is we take any data that was accessed and we put it on the hard drive. And if then if there is idle time, we go ahead and copy the remaining data to the hard drive. And what that means is after an hour or two, the game is on the hard drive, and you have access, you have dramatically quicker loading… And you have the ability to do some truly high-speed streaming.

Edit: Goddammit Killthee! At least my quote has 100% more Mark Cerny, so it's better ;)

The more you know. Thanks buddy.

if you're really into full installs, download the game from PSN.

...and also this. good to know.

Thanks, but what about if you switch between two or more games? I wonder if that cache will persist.

It'll likely keep as many games in cache as it can until it needs the space for something else, then, I'm sure it will decide what to dump based on your play behavior.

I'd expect it'd be similar to how Apple utilizes the SSD portion of their "Fusion Drive" system, which analyzes what you use most often and gives priority to that being on the SSD.

Don't want to be a dick but do you have a link that confirms this?

I know digital titles install while playing the game but I don't think this functionality works with physical disks.

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
Installs while you play.
Anyways, it would be better for optimal performance. :D

There goes all my sandwich-making time.

I might do the same. I wonder if I could just put the 500 gb drive from the PS4 right into my PS3? I still have a 60 gb

Both systems allow you to put whatever drive you want in. The only issue you'll have is if the 500GB in the PS4 is a 12.5mm drive instead of the 9.5mm drives the PS3 needs.

If they are the same height, you should be able to put it in.
