All this means is that every fanboy and journalists and asshole who tried to argue in favor of these policies looks doubly foolish because they wasted that time defending something now everyone admits was a mistake including Microsoft and for what? Did they get paid for those days of pathetic defense? I hope they did.

I agree with you entirely. The fact that MS was thinking in this direction is a huge negative against them to me, it says they have no problem fucking us. So I will never have them as my first console like I did last gen, they did lose that privilege. But a price drop or two later and after I see there's no chance they'll put the DRM back on? Sure.

Yeap, PennyArcade, Cnet, Znet, Gizmodo, Cliffy and co will look doubly foolish now.

If this is true, it's awesome for everyone. Really makes me wonder about that whole cloud computation PR stuff they've been trying to drop though, and how that would be impacted.

So curious as to whether this will happen or not. It would be kind of dumb not to at least relax their policies, but so far they haven't done anything to suggest "not dumb" to me so I'm torn.

This would be ridiculous, even more embarrassing than the policies themselves.

What a fucking joke MS has become. They are so out of touch.

Even if the Xbone ends up outselling the PS4, Sony still wins in my book. Having the balls to call MS out at E3 was brilliant. In the end, we all win!

Glad people didn't just accept this shit and that Microsoft wasn't dumb enough to go through with it after the negative reaction.

Third-parties and game journalists also have a lot of backtracking to do.

So much for Sony's advantage.
How exactly were they supposed to keep this advantage if a decision like this happens? It arose out of them keeping things the same as they had been while their competitor made idiotic decisions and gifted them good publicity.

Although the price is still an advantage, and the first party line up / greater power if the system is pushed to its limits may be influencing factors for some.

Holy shit. But how are they going to collect the marketing data of 100% of their customers?

They can still collect your data daily; they just won't kill your games if you dont' check in. Chances are very few of you will be offline for a considerable amount of time so it's a smart move. Big Bro Kinect is not going anywhere.

If this is true then it's a pretty big bomb. After this the only bad thing about the console would be the connection when first setting it up and the price. The price could be fixed easily, the other thing is more worrying.

For people having trouble with GiantBomb:

Microsoft to Pull Complete Reversal on Xbox One DRM Policies
by Patrick Klepek on June 19, 2013

Sources indicate Microsoft is going to move away from what's caused the company so much headache.

The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped

It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”

Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

I mean yeah the PS4 is still cheaper and better spec'd (which probably won't have that much of an impact since devs will build for the lowest common denominator) but I feel like the thing that got many to go for the PS4 was all the DRM stuff and if that's no longer an issue I feel MS moneyhatting exclusives + Halo is enough to win (at least in the US).

Oh god, GAF is going to go down again isn't it?

It's a big deal, son. If Microsoft can do this DRM, then anyone can do it. If they backtrack, there's hope. People are sheeple, and DRM isn't going to keep the thing from being successful. No DRM, tho, might help it be more successful.

Even if this is true, MS would have to do a lot more for me to regain my confidence in them. This would basically be like having a girlfriend break up with you and break all your games and shit, only to come crawling back later apologetically and replacing your shit. It's like, thanks for replacing my shit, but I ain't gonna be with you if you're crazy enough to do that shit in the first place.
Amen. I completely agree. Sony is the one who came out and straight up said they're the platform for gamers. It's part of their whole philosophy. Microsoft is only backtracking because they saw a massive storm that was about to annihilate them.

I'm hoping this isn't the case, if only because I want to see the impact on the industry with wildly differing platform ideologies between the PS4 and Xbox One.

I kinda felt the same way in a weird mad scientist way but I'd happily relent just for the sake of gaming. I'm probably through with Microsoft consoles due to my own personal tastes, but the folks who are enthusiastic about them shouldn't have been forced to go through what would have been.

Not really. XBone has only been announced for amonth.

All they need to do is make an announcement and say

"YOU SPOKE WE LISTENED"

Makes them look like good guys in the end.

Full disclosure. Im getting a PS4 but now will consider an XBone down the road if true.

Yep. Perfect opportunity for MS to change their image from that evil company to the good guys who listens to the consumers.
