Mario Kart 8 Announced For Wii U

Not to derail the track talk, but what do you guys think will happen with the roster? Mario Kart Wii had the biggest roster at 25 characters, but it got knocked down to 17 with Mario Kart 7.

I'm hoping for a big roster. I'd like to see them keep Shy Guy from 7 and maybe add a few characters from the "New" or "3D Land" series, since those seem to be the current Mario focus. Personally, my picks would be Lemmy or Roy Koopa and Nabbit.

Dry Motherfucking Bowser!!!!!!!!!
I don't care about the rest if he's in.

Nintendo just confirmed on their twitter that Super Mario Kart is coming to the Wii U VC.

Source? can't find anything in ther Twitter/Facebook pages

About the graphics I think that it looks really good, I just don't see a so great difference between this and other E3 Wii U games that are receiving mixed reactions in terms of graphics.
Probably the realistic textures for the environments are "tricking" people, or the gap from the Wii version is bigger than the one we are seeing for Mario or DK. But that's more because the Kart Wii title was somehow washed out in terms of resolution and polygonal models, compared to the great work done on Galaxy and DKCR.

About the game itself, I reckon that it could be the definitive version, because:

- there are karts (obviously), motorcycles (from the Wii version), "plane and boat" transformation (from the 3DS episode), + the new "magentic" shape
- there are new track dynamics with this magnetic novelty
- it is very well done in terms of graphical aspect
- it will enanche the local multiplayer up to 5 people
- it will enanche the split screen mode "without" splitscreen (one on the gamepad, one on the tv screen)
- it should have a strong online (judging from the past experience on DS, Wii and 3DS), with the addition of communities, Miiverse and video sharing

And still, due to my recent purchase of Sega all star for the Wii U, I'm happy that they postpone it to Spring, giving us Mario3D this holiday season :p (considering that I was almost sure that one of the two would have been early 14)

I hope Nintendo is designing new multiplayer modes with asymmetrical gameplay in mind. It would be a waste not to.

GameXplain posted an analysis of the E3 footage. I'm loving all the details hidden in the game

http://youtu.be/00_zO_p3z20

That was really cool.
Now that I think about it, I'm glad wheelies are gone.
It'll keep the balance so anyone can pick the kart or bike of their choice.
I always loved to use Mario Kart Wii's Wild Wing kart but I had to choose the Mach Bike all the time to be competitive and to don't lag behind.

I want to play this so bad. I'm trying to convince my sister to buy a Wii U for my nephew so that I can try out this game when I visit.

Probably posted and discussed, but here it is anyway.

Blue Shell said:
That's always something that the designers have to think about, and make small adjustments to figure out the best thing for that particular game. That's part of the reason about why it's not out on the floor, because we're still thinking about that balance and what we're going to do with the blue shell. We'd like your opinion actually, what you're idea would be to have that thing go at you.

Third Party Characters said:
The idea always come up during development of new "Mario Karts," but we believe there's a certain feel that "Mario Kart" has as a series, it's Mario kart, the "Mario Kart" characters are the ones that are going to be coming out. We almost feel like there's a secret rule that Mr. Miyamoto has that limits those new characters to just Mario. If we did it too much it would be "Smash Kart."

Don't tell anybody, but when we put the Miis in, Mr. Miyamoto was even kind of like, "You know, aren't you crossing the line here? This doesn't exactly feel like 'Mario Kart.'" But you know, with the Mii being a basic part of the console, we were able to put it in, and have him actually play it to get his sign off. It's still an unlock, you can't select a Mii from the get-go. So, for some reason it didn't exactly cross that secret line, but it kind of came close.

Concepts said:
In "7" we had the glider, and submersion in water, and so when we were also thinking about new ideas for "8," and we thought, "well, since we did all that, why not put a drill on the karts, and have them go through the earth somehow, subterranean racing." But, we kind of thought that's not such an interesting idea, and after that we hit upon the antigravity mechanic.

Here's an idea for the blue shell, don't give it to anyone when first place is barely a few inches away from everyone else...or give mushrooms in first.

I'll take some reworking of the blue shell. That'd be great. Maybe improve AI instead of rubber banding them since a lot of people hate that or something.

Blue Shell just needs to work like it did in Mario Kart 64. Homing turf cruiser that didn't have such a massive AoE blast and wasn't given out to a thousand people behind the leader. (Which from what I've heard is how it's handled in MK7, correct?)

I'm glad they're keeping third party (and first party) characters away from Mario Kart and I totally understand their reasons. Is like... people asking for Olimar in Mario 3D World...the hell? The whole idea sounds like a hot mess anyway.

Now, IMO a way to keep things a little bit more fair when using a Blue Shell is making it zig zag throughout the course. In Mario Kart Wii it flies, so no one gets hit unless you're near or in first place. In Mario Kart 7 it is easily avoidable if you're not in the middle of the track. With a zig-zagging blue shell on the floor, there are more chances for those behind the first place racer to get hit too and that would allow to the first place racer to keep their position.

Maybe it's not the best solution since Blue Shell's purpose is to go after the first place but I can't think of anything else to make it more fair besides decreasing its appearance rate.

Notice it goes after Yoshi, but it almost hits Koopa too.

Mr. Miyamoto came in and evaluated the prototype, and thought that it wasn't really unique enough. But what he did focus on was the banana element, and he said, "Use the banana," which sent us in the direction of Donkey Kong, which then snowballed into using all those Mario characters from the other games. And then when we hit upon that, it was like "that's it, that's the way we have to go."

Nintendo and bananas, they go way back.

I can't think of anything else to make it more fair besides decreasing it's appearance rate.

Something like this:

If First Place is X seconds ahead of Second Place, then the Blue Shell's Chance of Appearance is X*1.33%.

Then mix in something like this:

Decrease Blue Shell's Chance of Appearance by .3% for each Player that has entered the Final Lap.

Decrease Blue Shell's Chance of Appearance by an additional .3% for each Player that has entered the Second Half of the Final Lap.

Obviously, that's not that perfectly balanced, but they can toy around with that general idea.

what I'd do with blueshells

- those farthest behind still get them more often, but not as often as it is now.
-get rid of blueshell aoe
-blueshell still targets first place but acts like a redshell
-it can run into other targets on the way to 1st place and be destroyed
-there is a warning (or "check" like F-Zero) to let you know it's coming

maybe
-There is a small chance to hop and avoid the blueshell or drift sparks can destroy them on speed boost activation.

that N64 stage Toad's Turnpike has to make it in this game

loved that stage when i was a kid and everyone struggles in it, unless they take out a lot of the cars and buses that plaque the stage

It would never hit the target if it did the bolded.

Also, why get rid of the AoE? If I'm in first place, one of the only defenses I have is to try to make sure that second place gets hit also.

Yeah, it would literally hit everyone in front you.
Actually, I think they sould make the AoE broader... after all, if it's coming after you, it better causes as much damage to others as possible.

I haven't kept up with Mario Kart in a while...is this the first time this hovering mode and upside down stuff has been in the game? Feels like Nintendo rubbing it in our face that we'll never get another F-Zero game.

Yeah, no course in any Mario Kart game gets me quite in the zone like Toad's Turnpike. Constantly drifting between and around cars, knowing when to slow down or when to use a certain power up, I think it's the most fun level in any kart racer I've played. Actually takes a consistent effort just to stay in good position.

If you're complaining about the AoE, it means you weren't in first place. ;)

For a minute I was wondering what the Mario Kart team would do next because it felt like they released 7 recently and 8 would be out relatively soon. Then I realized that given their standard 2-3 year dev cycle their next game would be out in 2016 or 2017 and the 3DS would almost certainly have a successor in need of MK9.

this is what my ideal next-gen blue shell would like

i want a blue shell that starts at the back where it's fired, races up to right behind the next immediate player, and the split second before it hits them, it darts out of the way. so it kinda freaks everyone on the way up out. it also has a chance of hitting more than just player #1, it could have a chance of picking any of the players on the way up as well, although the players at the top would have the highest chances of getting hit and it'd decrease as their position goes lower. or it could hit all of them. it'd be more Mario Kart-y and just be completely random. you fire off a blue shell and who knows what the hell it'll do, it could screw one guy, it could screw everyone. it pisses off the guy in position #1 less often, it provides more benefit and entertainment to the player in last place. it'd just be funny looking, too.

Edit: Woops misread that last part, ignore this post.

I like this idea a lot! The blue shell should have a %chance of going right through the players (not in 1st) instead of dodging around it. Something like if there were 10 people infront of the person who uses the blue shell, it would have a 20% chance of hitting 10th place, 25% of hitting 9th place, ... , 65% chance of hitting 2nd place, and then the 100% hit on first place.

Played this for a good while last week - it's absolutely brilliant, and looks great. I'm a massive MK fan, mind, but I adored this.

So smooth, gameplay is top notch and the tracks I played were really sharp - the magnetic anti-grav stuff isn't overused and could be really interesting.

So, yeah, it's lovely.

As somebody deeply affected by motion sickness, I kind of worry that all this upside down stuff will make me dizzy.

Watching the video already did this a bit.

Maturity, bitches.
What Blue Shell needs to do is always go after the person in first till the last second.

Too many time someone can end up in second and still be targeted so the new racer in first gets an even bigger lead

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and
I have yet to play Mario Kart 7 and I consider information on the retro tracks to be spoilers, but can anyone tell me if Wario Colosseum is in that game? It is my favorite track from Double Dash and I hope they saved it for 8.

Thanks.

That track would be glorious in High Definition. I hope it makes it into the game.

Do you guys think they will add anti grav sections to the legacy tracks like they did glider sections to the ones in mk7? That would be awesome but may prove difficult no?

They may do but looking at a stage like Dry Dry Desert from Double Dash doesn't show many obvious spots for it.

Depends on what tracks they will choose but I see them using more gliders than anything else.
I think it's easier to remove/relocate areas than transforming them to accommodate Mario Kart 8's mechanic
For example (if they decide to use Grumble Volcano) I can see them removing these moving platforms to turn it into a glider area

That black blob of spoilers was very tempting but I prevailed.

Any tweaks to the classic tracks should only be done if the design lends itself to the concept. They shouldn't be hammer bro'ing round pegs into square holes, it would be an obvious mess, and take away what made the original track fun.

I personally thought MK64 had the best blue shell... just tweak the odds. It flies forward from whoever shot it, has a loud sound announcing it's presence, it takes out anyone not paying enough attention, and it's no worse to the player in first to be hit by a red shell (albeit, an unblockable one)

If you can't catch up after something like that, you're either so far behind it's irrelevant, or the person in first is just so good that you didn't stand a chance either.

The only thing that really needs to be tweaked is the odds of getting it. Rubber banding may be frustrating to the person in first... but Mario Kart isn't a perfectly skill based racer, you have to accept on some level that there will ALWAYS be luck or something else going against you.
