HaloGAF |OT| Not a thread about Halo

Status
Not open for further replies.
See its things like this why I want a thread merge. So much overlap in discussion. We need a Halo Community thread again to discuss the games, past/present/future. Discuss technical details about custom mods, water physics, discuss story and level design.

Things just get overlooked. I don't know, are we supposed to discuss Spartan Assault, Halo 5, whatever in the Halo 4 thread or what?

As for me, campaign wise it's Halo CE>3=Reach>ODST>2>4... I base it not just on level design or features but the way the story is told, how I felt as I played etc. Excited about future of story, did it conclude well, was I happy when I finished.

To be honest by the time I had completed Halo 3 I had lost faith that I would enjoy the story as it was presented in game. 343 is doing a far better job than Bungie did in terms of presentation.

But the fact Karen Traviss is changing the characterisation and the fact 343 seems to be pushing these changes further means that even though I think 343 are maybe better at telling a story... I dont like the story. I personally have lost interest in Halo from a story point of view, I think a change in auther would bring me back for sure, but I am not a fan of the current writers.

What is your upload, that is what really matters when it comes to streaming, if it's 2 mb go for 480p and you should be good. Otherwise, drop it to 360p so your stream isn't a slide show.

I have 6mbit/s upload and I stream with 1000kbit/s -2000kbit/s at 720p or 1080p. Should not be a problem to him, connection wise. He may be also limited by his PC performance.

Reach is my 2nd Favorite Campaign in the series, I surprisingly enjoyed it. Less emphasis on Brutes goes a long way. I also like the focus on infantry combat, Halo 3 was all Brutes and too many vehicles, Halo 2 was decent but too cheap and annoying overall.

Halo CE is king, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Reach campaign after I played it multiple times.

Yeah I think a good indicator of the Halo campaigns is how much I replay them, and how much I enjoy replaying them.

I replayed Reach (or just a mission or something) quite a bit by my standards, really enjoyable missions.

This makes no sense in relation to my post.

You have great upload speed so you can stream at higher quality, he has lower upload so he streams at lower quality.

I don't get it.

PC performance is relevant however.

No, you wanna discuss Halo 4 in the Halo 4 thread. This thread should be for everything and that may or may not include Halo 4. That Halo 4 thread has gotten way off track since E3. It's slowly turning into the thread it used to be which sucks.

If anything I would say its a good thing, I dont see what the split really achieved other than put a lot of people off posting.

Yeah all it did was divide a Halo community into two threads, with overlap in both. If everything else is posted here, it makes no sense were the one gaming community in off topic discussion.

If anything, the split at least achieved it's intended effect of toning down meta discussion, salt etc. If we go back to a single thread now, we can self moderate ourselves better. It's really for the best.

Halo OT |18| where we discuss all Halo games, past present and future and discuss changes in industry, technical discussions, much like any other community no?

It's just that not many of us play Halo 4 (I still do) but with Halo 3 becoming free, we'll see a boost in player population , maybe we could have some matches etc. Thoughts?

If we stick to using the halo 4 thread for halo 4 talk only and this thread for all off topic community and all other halo talk that could work well in terms of setting up halo 3 matches and so on. It will be just like old times except no one will mention halo 4 which is a good thing :p

You said, he should stream at 360p or 480p, but he could easily stream on 720p or 1080p with that connection. That's what I tried to say.

Adding theirs characters, adding new personalities to old figures, erasing old units (RIP OSDT), rectconing other things.

For me, the the worst is adding humanity to the spartans.

I doubt that he could stream at a solid frame rate above 480p with 2mb upload. I've seen ppl try and it is usually a slide show.

It doesn't matter, if I have a higher upload. If I stream with 1500 kbit/s, I'm only using that 1500kbit/s to upload the stream of my total 6mbit/s. The slideshow happens, because those guys have a poor PC most likely.

Edit: Beaten by YourExWife. Damn you :p

Edit 2: Booshka, I didn't want to sound harsh or be a smart-ass, it's just that many people don't know this. I have a lot of friends, who weren't streaming, because they thought they would need a beastly upload.

I stream at 720p @ 1500. You know nothin'.

If you slideshow at that point, it comes down to your shitty PC.

Well nevermind then, I remember Twitch streams being god awful with ppl that didnt have at least 3+mb upload, it was probably their shit PC's then.

I still suggest 480p streams though, at least until you get to the point where you can have multiple quality levels for viewers. A lot of people, especially those with Toaster PC's or bad internet have a hard time handling 720p streams, so they don't even bother watching streams that don't have quality options. This is especially prevalent when you are streaming console games, because your audience is usually console gamers that have mediocre to bad PC's.

Connection-wise, 1500kbps for 720 or 480 is no difference. And since it's not a high bitrate 720p, the hardware required to view it compared to 480 is basically nothing. Essentially, the internet is not the issue. But even mediocre pcs from the last 8 years or so can *view* low bitrate 720 streams, even though they couldn't handle the encoding of such streams.

Even $50 tablets can handle it nowadays. They handle Netflix and that's a bit more taxing.

Because... Reasons.

And because you are

Must be all the throttling that ISP's have been doing to customers that use Twitch often then.

That sounds horrible. I have a regional ISP and they're really good to their customers and with their service, so I haven't seen this. This sound Comcastic to me.

EDIT: Or Charterific? They used to own the cable here and it was a total joke.

I think Time Warner, AT$T (LOL cwutididthar), and Comcast are the biggest offenders.

Is this a thing in the USA? When do they start to throttle? No wonder, that they want to do this in germany aswell now... Well, atleast 1 major ISP here want's to do that after a certain amount of traffic. Luckily, I'm not affected.

Nah, it's turned people away and hurt this community.

Child please. This community has been hurting for a good while now. This was a step in the right direction to focus more on the discussion of games, negative or otherwise. That mega Halo thread cannibalized all other Halo threads. I can't remember an awesome discussion about Halo in a so long.

Maybe because Halo has been bad for so long, there was a reason the Halo 4 OT was dead before the split.

It allowed people to discuss Halo 4.

Nah, it's turned people away and hurt this community.

uggghhh

This is the entire point.

The community thread was to bring all polar opposites of the Halo spectrum together into one unique thread, not divide it among the existing Halo game and the outcast community.

It's only because the game has taken a certain direction (more player protection, less player vulnerability) that the game has seen a base player split.

That was largely because all of the discussion about Halo including Halo 4, took place in the mega thread. Also, just because many people dislike Halo 4, that doesn't mean there's no place for decent discussion about the game.

I think it should be like this.

Halo 4 OT - Halo 4 discussion only

Halo Franchise General Discussion Thread - in gaming community for any discussion regarding the series

There might be overlap but that happens in lots of threads, right now having this thread in off topic makes it less accessible and people don't always know there is Halo discussion in here.

You're right, but it will always be hard to have quality and insular Halo 4 discussion when so many of HaloGAF are disappointed and want to discuss what made Halo great to them.

The vast majority of Halo 4 discussions will have a "how Halo went bad undertone to it." Discouraging this type of discussion is asinine and impossible, Halo 4 is not in a bubble, it's a stupidly large AAA game influenced not only by Halo games of the past, but all FPS games. Because it is a disappointment, and to an extent, a failure as a Halo game there will always be a meta discussion on why and what went wrong.

HaloGAF is needed because Halo 4 is bad essentially.

This is quite true, but you can't deny that people's opinions of the game weren't favorable and it influenced their posting behavior. People didn't like the game and made drive-by comments about how "shit" the game is. It's going to be much tougher to find good discussion about a game that isn't appreciated by many.

On an unrelated note, I look dashing in my Hunter Destiny shirt.

EDIT: My avatar looks pimp on the dark theme.

But I don't think discussion about what's wrong with the game is meta. It's discussion about the game.

I'm not denying that. I agree that that played a huge part in the shitty posts.

There hasn't been a awesome Halo discussion since the split so what's the point? Yea the old way has some bad post, but it made people join in more. Now I don't even know where to post Halo related stuff, so I don't. Guess I'll just wait for the Destiny thread so we can fuck around in 3-4 threads.

Also never use "child please" again unless you want to slap a lawyers ass and head-butt a chick.

But it has been improving and the thread isn't so fast now that discussions don't get chopped up across multiple pages.

I also don't know how it made people join in more. I've actually had people say the opposite.

But it wasn't even a split. They just shut it down. Said to regroup with hellogaf to stick together and to possibly make a new thread after E3 to discuss a specific game only.

Some of us just latched onto Halo 4 OT because that's when the weapon tuning update went live and now Turbo etc.

I just think with Spartan Assault announced, now Halo 5 (Halo One), turning it into a saga, we should have a new community thread. Unite everyone in one thread to discuss things. Half the discussions go missed, so many stopped posting altogether.

If you can see, there isn't much trolling, salt or insults. So this temporary closure could have served as a warning I guess.

I don't know, 95% of my posts are Halo, Halo 4 or gaming. Would be nice to do it in gaming community. Let's see what mods say. It's unfair to the Halo 4 thread to discuss water physics of Halo 3 lol.

I can't get used to dark GAF. Just looks too different ya know? It's almost like something is just... wrong.
I agree actually, my only issue with default is that it's like staring into the sun for too long. Currently trying to adjust to desktop dark since I use dark for mobile.
