Rumor: Microsoft announcing Indie self-publishing for Xbox One this week at BUILD?

Are we sure that the keynote will be only about 8.1?
But I guess you are right.

Well the beta is definitely coming out today and even though everything has leaked they haven't actually announced anything about it. So most likely all we will get is a lot of retreading with some demos.

Either way none of the streams are going to be about games or developing games, if there's anything in them that's gaming related it will only be a mention or a segment of a much longer, likely very boring presentation.

never heard about the cat, apparently

Basically.

Saying you don't want games from devs who aren't ready for the big leagues is a really disappointing thing to read. Most of the top flight developers today started their coding lives when there weren't even leagues to be big in. Literal bedroom coders larking around, toying with print commands and poking at hex colour charts. That's how you start growing and if you're able to see a return (meagre as it might be) on your experimentation, it will inevitably push some to indulge their passion more and that's how you unearth the next generation of developers.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be open markets. If you want to jump into game development, start with iOS, Android and PC. Get a feel for game design. Build your way up. When you're ready, you can start developing for consoles, put in a good amount of money, and see a return if your game is well received.

There is a benefit for a closed market like that. Prices stay premium, games are of better quality, less competition, all of which is good for the indie who's trying to turn this into a career. This is how console digital markets should be.

I think we're just having a philosophical disagreement then :p I made a game for XBLIG which has pushed me into exploring mobile devices and PC... the reverse would very much not have happened.

With appropriate surfacing of the quality content, which MS has struggled with throughout, there's no reason not to have all comers welcome.

Welp, Ballmer just said there won't be a lot of Xbox stuff for BUILD.

SO MUCH FOR THAT.

Glad I didn't waste my time watching the keynote I guess.

He didn't say none though? lol. Hopefully they still announce some sort of initiative today. Self-publishing needs to be the standard across the board.

uhh, what?

Well Sony is firing on all cylinders and seems to be getting more praise which is causing MS to reverse all their positions. It's a win for indie developers, but after the policies they've been inflicting on these devs for years now, it doesn't feel like MS is doing this because they care about fostering relationships with those devs. They're doing it simply to attempt to match feature sets with a company that came out of the gate kicking their ass.

Still a win for indie developers but that's not why Microsoft is doing it.

So Xbox live indie games didn't exist?

It's just going to be the evolution of their policies last gen

you really think MS loves their audience? you think the DRM reversal they pulled was out of consciousness? we all understand this is a business, but the fact that sony showed they at least pay attention to what gamers want was a very strong point, MS is a company that rarely backs down on something that has been said publicly, they must have been scared shitless with all the good press sony was getting, something they never anticipated, what about sony move of having 6 indie developers on stage at E3? all of the sudden MS have an indie policy to? sign of weakness and a failure of reading the market you're offering your product to, xbox fans should be happy of course but this should have been the way from the start, they created an image that wont be easily forgotten, lots of people have jumped ship to sony, at least half of my friend list on xbla already preordered their ps4, IMO they dig their own grave, that doesn't mean the xbone will do terrible but they lost major good and strong will with plenty of american consumers and that was their biggest market

Does Sony? Does any company?

Why did they wait so long? Sony has been courting indie devs with friendly policies for years now while MS still required exclusivity, publishers, and paid patches. It seems to be reactionary policy changes and not proactive.

So did they announce self-publishing? The only reason why I think they wouldn't want self-publishing is that they don't want a bunch of cheaper smaller games reducing the price people expect to pay for games.

No. But keynote is still running.

If sony been doing it for years, why such a dearth of content between psn and xbox live.
It's only kicked into high gear recently. It's already paying dividends with games like Guacamelee and Hotline Miami coming to PS3 and Vita.

Automatic GPU memory paging/tiling announced for W8.1 and Xbox One.
They showed a full scene using 3GB of texture data rendered by a GPU limited to 16MB memory.

Build is like 3 days long.

edit: Saved that before finishing. They will probably have a dedicated talk about Xbox sometime during the conference.

I just don't understand how you arrived at "you really think MS loves their audience?" from someone saying "uhh, what?", the implication from you being that anyone thinks that about Microsoft, or that another company has anything but their financial bottom line at heart.

This is already a feature of the AMD GCN architecture using in Xbone and PS4. AMD refers to it as Partially Resident Textures (PRT) and claims texture sizes up to 32TB.

The 3 GB of data wasn't being rendered. There was that much data, but it pages in data in 16MB amounts as it gets closer and in a smaller view.

Ah ok. But it seems they integrated that into DirectX without the need for GCN as they only said this a DirectX11 feature.

Correct. Microsoft added the feature to DirectX 11.x and of course it's hardware independent like most DirectX features (i.e., both NVIDIA and AMD can implement and support it in their drivers). This is a nice feature for Windows PC games and will allow them to maintain parity with Xbone/PS4 games that might use the PRT/Megatexture feature.

Keynote over. They announced NOTHING for development on XB1 for indies. Absolutely nothing. And nothing tomorrow either since that'll be the keynote for cloud/office stuff.

I'm a bit angry right now.

Ok. So no real world on self publishing. But some sentences from Ballmer sounded like people can publish apps to whatever platform they want. Including Xbone.

Nope. He made it clear that Windows is one segment you can push apps to, and Xbox is something else entirely.

They would have made it very, very clear that you can publish Xbox games if that were the case.

is there another day?

This was it. Tomorrow is server/cloud based computing and Office 365 stuff.

Might just announce it one of the sessions. It's not that big of a deal for the broad audience of BUILD.

This is a keynote for DEVELOPERS! As in, guys making games and apps for Windows devices. There couldn't be a more targeted audience for Xbox One publishing/dev news than this one.

If they don't have anything for Indies big or small over the next few days... that might be the nail in the coffin for me. I like the games they've shown, I like the multimedia stuff too, but if there's nothing I can do to put back into the system like I could with the 360, it's a real disincentive.

The streaming out game footage to tablets in the Spark demo was pretty nifty though. If that's a system level function at some point, there's your off-screen play like the others have.

Why? This keynote was to usher in changes to Windows. Them saying anything about Xbox One was always going to be about connected devices, nothing more. Also, this isnt focused on developing just games.

Doesn't make sense to call these smaller games Xbox games even on W8 when Xbox itself won't support them.
