It's amazing how Nintendo does the opposite of most people.

You see a trailer or screenshot at E3? Chances are the final game won't look THAT good. (Colonial Marines, Killzone 2, Uncharted 3)

When you see a trailer or screenshot for a Nintendo first-party at E3? Chances are the final game won't look THAT bad.

Others have bullshots.
Nintendo has crapshots.

(I'm not saying that EVERYONE that isn't Nintendo does this, but some do.)

not only do they make their shown footage look better, but they rarely even show off the best looking stages. they keep those as surprises. it really is something else. it shows how different their game development strategy is to their competitors.

People sometimes forget that Nintendo, unlike most western developers, polishes graphics in the final stages of development. This is probably why they don't like to show off games until they are nearing release.

It makes perfect sense that this game got a substantial improvement in the graphical deparatment.

Plus the animations look really amazing.

The animations for the creatures in Pikmin have always had so much character. Textures shmextures. The animations really matter to create the world of Pikmin, and Nitnendo nails it.

Going to add more to it to make it feel like a nintendo arcade/kiosk.

showing real gameplay footage running on actual hardware takes years of experience

Just watched the Direct footage and I fall in love with the look of the game each time I see something new.

I've got this pre-ordered. It's surprisingly cheap on Amazon UK.

I have to admit I've never played Pikmin 1 or 2. Until yesterday I wasn't even hyped for this game. But I watched the Japanese Nintendo Direct and it simply amazed me. This game looks awesome in motion and the whole idea just got to me. I pre-ordered it and can't wait now to play it in a month!

So we know white/purple Pikmin are in the game, they're in all the art and we've seen footage of them. There was a purple Pikmin in the lastest video, even. But what I'm starting to doubt is their inclusion in the campaign proper.

We've got five clear spaces for Pikmin to show up in these menus, and really no space for another two to be inserted. I also saw a white flower for making white Pikmin in the Nintendo Direct, but it was only in the challenge mode footage. The purple Pikmin was also challenge mode footage. I'm thinking that red/yellow/blue/rock/winged will be the canonical five in the campaign, but certain challenge mode levels will have the white/purple flowers that let you use the other dudes.

I'll be really disappointed if Purples and Whites are locked off to the challenge/multiplayer mode. Seems really likely now too. :(

It's POSSIBLE that if there are still caves from time to time, you could make whites/purples in there, but maybe they can't actually exit the cave with you. But yeah at the very least it's lookin unlikely that you'll be storing any of them in your onion.

[Edit] There are whites and purples at the end of this old Nintendo Direct, but the little mini-ship means it's also challenge mode. So... yeah, lookin pretty cut and dry here.

my hype for this has really skyrocketed in the last month or so

For a brief while I was even considering canceling my pre-order, but at this point I CAN'T WAIT.

That's interesting... not gonna lie, lack of white pikmin in the story mode is a bit disappointing, but purple and rock pikmin seemed a bit redundant anyway.

Maybe they are saved for post game content as well? Seems really weird that they just leave them out like that.

Makes you wonder how Mario Kart 8 and Smash will look like when they are closer to release. (Wind Waker and 3D World are a bit close to get a graphical upgrade as significant as Pikmin's.)

Looked into it, and doesn't appear to be the case. Not entirely redundant, then!

Rock Pikmin seem pretty unique in general. Their big thing is just that they are "hard." It translates more to defense than anything. Can't be skewered by enemy spikes, can't be squashed by frogs. Break fragile things when thrown against them. Can't actually latch on to enemies to repeatedly hit them, they just bounce off and run up again to crash themselves against them.

Purple guys have heaviness, doing huge damage when they land on an enemy and stunning them, and they can carry 10x as much. I thought they'd be really similar to rock dudes at first but they don't seem to actually share much of anything. I wish they were included in the campaign, though, and tweaked a bit like how the yellow guys gained the electricity trait in 2. Maybe a tweak for the whites as well, since "do a lot of damage if eaten" is a pretty tragic skill.

That's not always true.

I'll never forget how hyped I was and the taste of disappointment. First time I was thoroughly disappointed with a Nintendo title.

I'm holding out hope. I remember the graphical improvements for games like Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land from E3 to release were staggering. Kid Icarus Uprisings jump was big too, but that was like 2 extra years of dev time.

Pink and blue Pikmin seem to have redundancy. Why do you even need blues if pink can just fly over water?

I'm really glad that bombs are back, though. Yellow Pikmin lost way too much of their uniqueness in the second game.

It's nice to see Pikmin 3 looking much better right before release. I have to say though, does this game just look like a much larger version of Pikmin 1, with elements of 2 (multiple trainers, dungeon like sections, etc.)? That's generally what I wanted from Pikmin 2, so I'd like that.

I really wonder whether they will market this a lot or not. Clearly they've started their Japanese marketing campaign. I do hope they do that in the US/Europe as well, as Pikmin 3 will be a nice contrast from the large amount of platformers the Wii U is getting.

I don't mind if the main game only has 5 pikmin types, but I will miss throwing a purple pikmin on top of a bulborb and having it deflate like a balloon.

Maybe fruits/treasure will be buried further underwater, so only blue pikmin can grab it.

To get fruits/items undersea? To fight enemies at sea? Passing over a body of water was not the Blue Pikmin's only advantage.

I am pretty sure Purple/White are still in.

Yes, and I just want to take this opportunity to say I think it's hilarious that rock pikmin attack enemies by tackling them, lol

They are, but it's looking incredibly likely that they will only be available in challenge/multiplayer modes and not the actual single player game. :(

Oh yeah didn't really think about that. Who knows. If they are only available through caves again maybe there will be some caves in multiplayer.

If they do caves this time, I would hope they aren't randomly generated. I'd prefer carefully hand-crafted levels instead.

Moving through water was their only advantage. Though I guess you might be right about combat if pink Pikmin are even worse.

If they have underwater items just to make blue Pikmin useful it'll be kind of lame, honestly.

Well yeah moving through the water was their only ability through that ability they had multiple advantages.

while it is improved, it is a slightly misleading comparison, the old graphics were not that dark. Looks like you grabbed a still from while it was still fading in. It was still pretty dark though. Looks like most of the big picture improvement has been boosting saturation and brightness in general.

I hope the pikmin 3 OT has a no graphic talk clause, because every thread we get now for the game has always had "looks like a gamecube game" "crappy textures" "some next gen game this is"

seriously, it's. getting. old.

So long as the mods allow it and people with no interest in the game to begin with keep drive by posting, it will happen. At least for the first few pages of the thread. They will fade off though.

It'll happen, but hopefully people are enjoying the game and discussing it enough to drown out JordanN.

For me, the worst part about the OT will be the week of waiting before America gets the game while Europe already has it.

Who exactly is in charge of these things? I want to curse NoA, but they can't just be saying, "Ah, one week later!" (or double in the case on W101) can they? I just don't really get it. Ignorance on my part, most likely.

So...anyone else bummed that multiplayer is local only? I'm still buying Pikmin, but that sure is disappointing.

I would assume it's an NoA decision (especially since we know who their new CEO is), but I don't know. The wait for Pikmin hurts most because of my anticipation, but the extended W101 delay is just salt in the wound.

Whoever it is, it's probably the same jerk that's holding Kirby's Dreamland 2 hostage while the game has been out on VC in Europe and Japan for almost a year.

Very bummed. For a game like Pikmin, my only chance of playing multiplayer would've been an online mode. I won't be able to even give it a try now.

I used the start of this video for the comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxWIvaD2XQI

It doesn't appear to get any brighter to me. Sure, the end does, but that's a different time of day.

Can't wait for the Mario and Luigi Dream Team OT, where we have to wait a month while the rest of the world already has it. Or the W101 OT. Or the Bravely Default OT. Or the Layton 6 OT. Or the Flipnote 3D OT. Or the

You'll have LoZ 3DS & DKTF before Japan and Pokemon at the same time, though.

That's a plus, right?

Sure! Simultaneous Pokemon is a wonderful thing, I hope it's the start of a trend; but I'm not all that excited for Zelda tbh. It's really odd that Japan is getting Zelda in 2014, but with a holiday consisting of Pokemon and Monster Hunter it's probably for the better, it would get eaten alive :p

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is 2014 in Japan too? That's especially odd if that's the case, had no idea. Huh.
