Xbox boss says hardware analysis between consoles is “meaningless”

Xbone me if old:
Xbox product planning boss Albert Penello feels that hardware analysis is “meaningless” because it’s all about the games.

Speaking with OXM, Penello said there are very few gamers who will buy consoles for the specs alone, so there is no sense in comparing Xbox One and PS4.

“The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless,” he said. “Because this isn’t like 1990, when it was 16-bit versus 32-bit.

“As a matter of fact, they actually go out and they talk about how proud they are about their off-the-shelf parts. Our guys’ll say, we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance. For me, I’d rather not even have the conversation, because it’s not going to matter.

“The box is going to be awesome. The games are going to be awesome. I heard this exact same argument last generation and it’s a pointless argument, because people are debating things which they don’t know about. They’re not [head silicon engineer] Nick Baker or [corporate vice president of IEB hardware Todd Holmdahl], and I’m not [lead PS4 architect] Mark Cerny, so why are we having this discussion?”

Penello feels consumers will pick a console for the games it offers, rather than for its capabilities on paper. "Here's what you care about," he said. "You bought a system to play great games and have great experiences. I feel like our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good, if not better, technically - on top of all the magic we're going to add with the instant switching, and the power of the cloud.

That clowd powa!

its better than publishing bs numbers like MS does.

ps please go f ur self. getting ps4 only. Thanks for even remotely thinking that DRM was the future.

so it's true that they have a weaker HW?

on top of all the magic we're going to add with the instant switching, and the power of the cloud. :lol ok

While reading I was always wating for the "We also have the power of the cloud. Blah blah unlimited possibilities blah blah" line.

They did that at the start of last generation. Now with more widespread internet usage any BSing attempts will be hounded upon by internet users, whereas before it was less likely to cause any major repercussions and the bad publicity that comes with it. Times are different now.

Dude was this close to say "Have you seen Titanfall. End of discussion"

This thread should be fun. As if we don't already have enough places to crap on MS.

It's not meaningless, but I at least see what he's saying. The divide is a lot less than it used to be.

So if they had the better hardware they wouldn't advertise the fact.

A gpu with 30-50% less power and half the rops on other is less powerful.

Not rocket science.

This is what you say when your specs are weaker.

Pretty much. And they really need to stop using that 'Power of the cloud' expression. By all means extol the virtues of their infrastructure and the real benefits it presents. But stop trying to blow smoke up people's asses when it comes to the clouds impact on performance. It's getting embarrassing.

They were throwing a bunch of useless numbers around to make it seem impressive. This guy is just covering, like MS is doing lately.

Yeah it's meaningless when you don't end up looking better than the competition, remember Major Nelson's ridiculous spec comparisons last gen?

"Why should gamers compare specs which are tangible numbers with real world comparisons when they should be comparing the intangible unlimited power of the cloud which is only available on our system which makes it the best system?"

He wouldn't be saying this if they didn't.

I'm sure this is true, but the type of people who buy consoles at launch are probably more cognizant of the specs of both.

Anyway the systems are really similar and thus easy to compare. There's not really a debate as to which one is more powerful. Whether that matters to people or not is a different story.

Haha what?

In every news article that has an interview with a Xbox guy they always say POWER OF THE CLOUD. It's so goddamn annoying.

Why does everyone at MS sound so like a sleazy politician these days? Beyond the outright lying, misinformation, and doing things thenblaming the other guy bits.

Oh.

It's typical PR BS.

Did you watch Mark Cerny's talk at Gamelab? That's how you enlighten people about the platform. Not all the BS MSFT has been spewing for a couple of months now.

You have all the buzz words and not enough technical talk on Xbone. You then have 2 separate talks from Mark Cerny which outline many of the technical merits of PS4.

So they are not even going to try say they have better hardware?

MS PR is kind of a clusterfuck. Every console maker tries to make it seem like there console is the most powerful thing around even when its just BS. Its been the same forever. Its weird they are just giving up that fight so early.
