Dug up my OnLive account to mess with some trials on my laptop through wi-fi. Input lag was noticeable, but still far better than I expected. Color me impressed.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on behind the scenes but I too believe the latency has improved a bit over the past year. The PC client received an update a couple of months back that allows you better control of the bandwidth and latency settings of the service. If you're set to automatically log in then you might miss it but here's their blog post that completely explains what each option means:

30 June 2013 Update

Alright, I know this post hasn't been updated in a while so I've decided to post a quick update on recent news, releases, and community events. I know the OnLive following here isn't that big but I'm sure there's a few out there and new players are always welcome!

First of all, my OnLive profile:

OnLive2013-06-3001-56-31-58_zpsdb18ffeb.jpg

Add me as a friend if you want! Also (read my warning before clicking this link) here is my collection of brag clips. I set up a dummy Facebook account and had OnLive automatically upload to it whenever I recorded a clip. Nothing too amazing in there as I pretty much recorded everything I found even slightly amusing. Also some of the clips take place during the endings of their respective games. I don't think there's anything massively spoiling in there (each clip is only 10 seconds) but just giving fair warning. Feel free to post your profile and/or collection of brag clips!

News:

New Update Puts You in the Driver’s Seat
Some of you noticed that we added some new settings to the OnLive Game client that can enhance the visual quality and responsiveness of your game experience. We’re excited to see that the new options have been well received by our customers. That makes sense, because most of these improvements came from suggestions that our online community made to us. My thanks to all of you who have spoken up!

Whether you’re one of the many newcomers to OnLive or a longtime cloud gamer, here’s a quick walkthrough of what’s new, and how to get the best results for your computer and connection.

Full story: http://blog.onlive.com/2013/04/

Eurogamer did an extensive analysis of this update here.

The upgrade is considerable, with textures and distant details coming across with a far greater degree of intricacy on the 12mbps cap. The clarity still doesn't hold up to the real deal (video compression pares back colour depth significantly, resulting in a washed out image) but the threshold for making this a passable gameplay experience is now far more tolerable, especially in living room conditions where the player sits some distance away from the screen.

Well, the only issue with running at such an improved level of clarity is that the service's other shortcomings are brutally highlighted; namely the low-to-mid quality graphical settings on the server-side PCs. For example, titles like Darksiders 2 still run with low-resolution character shadows, while Saint's Row 3 is cut short of the higher levels of DirectX 11 lighting that might be possible on even a budget-conscious PC setup. While it's to be expected that compression artifacts will help to hide some subtler visual effects such as ambient occlusion, the promise of playing high-end games on low-spec hardware is still far from being fulfilled.

However, if the PlayStation 4 reveal told us anything, it's that cloud gameplay is still a key priority for the future. Valve's Gabe Newell has also hinted that PC gameplay will transition from home-based server PCs to a more cloud-like arrangement. By extension, it's unlikely that Microsoft will be left behind too. All of these systems should benefit from tech advancements over the first-gen OnLive, but at the very least it's good to see the existing service improve to the degree it has. Our recommendation? If you're on a high-bandwidth broadband connection, log in via PC, ramp up the bandwidth to the max and check it out. OnLive still has a very generous selection of playable demos and there's still more than enough content to get the measure of the service.

OnLive Nate Teases Big Announcements Coming
As OnLiveFansForum settles into its own with a slick new branding scheme, I feel it's high time that I break my silence and express my great appreciation regarding this evolution of the OnLive Community. I also want to acknowledge and thank Jeremy, Niko, and Major Probes for spinning up the site without skipping a beat. On behalf of the staff and management of OnLive, thank you for keeping this community vibrant and independent.

I think it serendipitous that the community has moved into a new phase at this particular point in time. I believe it clearly represents a new beginning for not only you guys, but for OnLive as well. I know I've been talking about this concept of OnLive2.0 for a greater part of a year. I want to state for the record that OnLive2.0 has been in development since September, and in no way has what we've been working on surfaced yet to our customers and community. What we are planning to release over the next year is not anything you’ve seen, or heard about in the past.

So what the heck is it Nate?... Unsurprisingly, I'm unable to get specific at this time. I can say that we will be releasing a bit of news in the weeks after E3. Following that, in the Fall, we will release another game changing element of our future family of services. I can only tell you that these are cloud gaming specific announcements. They represent a fundamental shift in how we go about delivering games to our customers, derived from 10 years of development and service operation…and yes, your past purchases are safe. We recognize your investment in our service, and have no intention to limit access to what you’ve already paid for.

While major companies scramble to roll out the features we launched with, we are looking at the long term picture. We have entire teams dedicated to producing a set of features and technologies that will undoubtedly disrupt not only gaming, but modern computing as we know it. Expect news of this to release sometime next year.

Big talk, I know. I'll leave it to you, our most dedicated and skeptical devotees, to judge for yourself when these developments release over the next year. In the meantime, I suggest you all leave any relic expectations from OL1 at the door when you come to this site and express your point of view. We are about fundamental disruption of established industries. It's something we've always been good at, and certainly something we've always enjoyed doing. It should be a good ride coming up.

This is a great community, poised to grow, and I look forward to sharing the upcoming experience with you.

Sincerely,

Nate

I haven't actually purchased anything for the service but it still works as well as ever playing trials of games. (Don't think they accept Swedish CCs.)

YMMV but I don't notice any input lag playing on a fiber connection here in southern Sweden. The stream itself is not as crisp as HD YouTube but it is good enough, especially on hardware unsuitable for any gaming that is more demanding than minesweeper.

What is the IQ of the games? What I mean is, are the games set to the highest setting you would find in the PC version? I thought this would be a plus for cloud gaming so you didn't need to spend a lot on PC parts.

^ Nice post!

Time for a new OP perhaps?

Thanks! I was originally intending on creating a new thread but it will be a while before I hit member status. If the OP wants to copy and paste my post into his then by all means feel free!

Is there 1080p stream yet?

Nope, the stream is still capped at 720p. In April though the quality of the PC stream was improved quite noticeably by additional settings that allowed the user to set the bandwidth used (from 3Mbps to 12Mbps). At 10 - 12Mbps the stream was noticeably better than previously.

Eurogamer did an in depth analysis of the update here.

There are a few that are set at fairly high settings (Just Cause 2 and DiRT 2 come to mind) BUT most are at around medium settings. As stated above the quality of the stream did receive a nice bump a couple of months back though.

Eurogamer did an in depth analysis of the update here.

I just booted this up on my Nexus 10, but comcast is just too slow. It would be awesome to plop my tablet down, whip out a portable (small) bluetooth controller and start up a game from anywhere with an Internet connection. I really thought this service would be the future of gaming, but ISP's aren't really attempting to improve their services .

True, the biggest deterrents to cloud gaming are ISP speeds, bandwidth caps, and latency. Speeds have increased dramatically since OnLive first launched though (around a 3 Mbps national average then compared to the 7.4 Mbps average now with a worldwide average of 4 Mbps). Hopefully that trend continues and bandwidth caps will relax with the advent of fiber networks. The actual OnLive PC client however doesn't require an extremely fast connection (5 - 6 Mbps should perform with decent stream quality with a bare minimum requirement of 2 - 3 Mbps). I'm not exactly sure the bandwidth requirement for the Android client but the stream is noticeably of lesser image quality so I'm assuming it's on the lower end of the spectrum.

What do you mean time for a new OP? The service has made very little progress as of late. The new OP would consist of "YES! We're still around!" Other than Witcher 2, those new games are mundane.

I almost bought a game through OnLive in 2010 or 2011, but then I saw some sort of warning that my license to own the game could expire in 2014. There was no way I was spending $50 bucks on a game I'd be unable to play in a few years. Heck, games I still play on my PS3 are much older than that. This is one of the concerns I have about going to all digital. Also, after trying this and Gaikai, I prefer Gaikai. I first used Gaikai (and I didn't even know it) when I played a browser demo for FIFA and it worked flawlessly for me. Then I found out about Gaikai and realized I had used it already without even knowing it. Granted, Gaikai was only demos and OnLive was full games, so I don't know if that had something do to with it.

The little warning is not your license expiring but rather that OnLive only guarantees the game will be on their servers for at least 3 years after release date; keyword being at least. I'm sure they'd like to keep the games on there forever but they can't guarantee that. If it's any reassurance, the service has been live for over 3 years now and no one has ever had a game removed that they purchased a Full PlayPass for. They have removed games from their library but (much like Steam, Xbox Live, etc) anyone who has purchased a Full PlayPass still has full access to those games. Also OnLive Nate's (he's the OnLive community manager I believe) gave some pretty reassuring words in regards to our purchases:

I can say that we will be releasing a bit of news in the weeks after E3. Following that, in the Fall, we will release another game changing element of our future family of services. Gaikai was indeed impressive tech but very limited in scope when compared to OnLive. Like you said, it only provided demos and nothing else. OnLive provides full games, full game trials, spectating, gameplay recording, seamless streaming, a Netflix like game subscription service (PlayPack), proprietary hardware (controller and console), mobile phone and tablet support, and also a complete online service. There is free online multiplayer, voice chat, party chat, unified friends list, messaging system, and many other things that make it comparable to Xbox Live and PSN. Very impressive for something that's completely free. Additionally, OnLive aims to make all their games 60 FPS while Gaikai aimed for 30 FPS. Like I said, indeed impressive tech since it provided better IQ and latency compared to OnLive...but a bit limited in scope. Also all OnLive new releases are $35 or $42 (granted you have the PlayPack subscription). The PlayPack subscription gives you a 30 percent discount on all purchases which would make a $50 game $35 and a $60 game $42. The only exception to this being The Witcher 2 since it includes a digital copy with every purchase that you can download through GOG.

What do you mean time for a new OP? The service has made very little progress as of late. The new OP would consist of "YES! We're still around!" Other than Witcher 2, those new games are mundane.

Thanks! I'll post updates as I find them!

Onlive is dead. With the new consoles coming out, there is nothing short of a partnership with a major player that could make the service interesting again.

That's definitely an interesting outlook. I don't completely agree with it though and feel that the release of new consoles provide a great opportunity for renewed interest in OnLive. OnLive already has many of the features being touted by next gen platforms (spectating, game recording, instant gaming, remote play, etc) and also has free online multiplayer complete with features like unified friends list and cross game chat. Every new release on OnLive is $35 - $42 if you have the $9.99 PlayPack subscription. If they're able to get their act together and get big name titles like Watch Dogs while advertising their features/prices then I'm sure it would definitely turn a few heads. There's a long road ahead of them though and many things have to go right but there's a definite opportunity here.

The only problem with that logic is that most of us, even extremely casual gamers that have an Xbox to play Call of Duty with their friends and watch Netflix, don't really care about those features and aren't buying a next gen console because it can record gameplay or has a spectating option. They're buying a new console because it means deeper experiences and obviously better graphics. What OnLive does is definitely interesting, but it's definitely not competing with next gen. If OnLive could offer 1080p streaming of games running at max settings, with the same selection as Steam or an equivalent service has but at drastically reduced prices (given you're only buying the rights to /stream/ a game), it would offer something of value. Right now, I'm not seeing it. It would be really cool if it functioned like Netflix though, in that you could pay $8-10 a month to stream 1-2 year old titles.

Hmmmmmm, I think "deeper experiences" is very subjective and many people do feel that spectating and gameplay recording does lead to deeper experiences. With the success of gaming personalities on Youtube and dedicated services like Twitch there's definitely interest in these features. The implementation of these features by Sony and Microsoft could significantly bolster that interest. Sony seems especially keen on pushing for a more "social" gaming experience. Additionally better graphics is probably one of the easier things for OnLive to accomplish. To provide graphics comparable to next gen platforms they only have to upgrad their servers. The end user doesn't have to buy any additional hardware. As for a "Netflix" like service, they've offered an option like what you've described for a few years now. It's $8 - $10 a month to stream every game in their PlayPack service. Being a member also grants you a 30 percent discount on all game and hardware purchases. There are currently 254 games available in the PlayPack. Check it out here.

I doubt they're going to update their infrastructure to keep up with PS4/Xbox One, but that would be awesome.

Onlive has, so far, been a great gaming tragedy.

Don't get me wrong, I used and enjoyed the service when it launched. The consoles were getting stagnant and I wanted something different and closer to a gaming PC option [an aside: I ended up building a PC within the year anyway, thus negating this service for me]. I bought a few games and even used the playpack for a few months. The truth is, there isn't a large enough community to sustain multiplayer experiences on more than 1 or 2 games. I got AC:B when it launched and there was never more than 2 games going at a time and it could take 30min to fill a single game. The content fell off a cliff. It's just not there to draw people in. Sure they launched with a lot of innovative features that were ahead of their time, but Apple isn't a market leader because they did everything first. Gaikai is the winner of the two as they secured a long-term successful venture with Sony. If Onlive could provide a compelling service that piggybacks on physical (like UV/digital copy for dvd) or digital downloads (like the gog.com promo with witcher 2) they may have a future. Their future is probably in the mobile space, but data speeds and caps aren't ready yet. As it stands, your one voice stands alone. If you aren't PR or a fansite runner, I don't see an average gamer caring about Onlive anymore.

Yes, unfortunately there has been very little activity on the OnLive front but they're still alive. They teased several months ago about big announcements coming in the Fall so I remain cautiously optimistic about OnLive's future.

Onlive will always have special place in my heart for 3 reasons:-

1) I got to buy saints row 3 at launch for £1.

2) I got to demo many great PC games before buying them elsewhere.

3) To this day the only online store to refund my money after a purchase.

I bought Darksiders 2 on what I thought was a play pass, played the first three levels, realise i was billed for the full game, contacted onlive and got a full refund. Any other service id be SOL

unfortunately every one of those things didnt make the company money, in fact it caused them to lose it.

More teases from OnLive Nate:

I've written 10 different lead-ins to this reply. Every time, I write some awesome hook about how what we are working on is going to blow doors on everyone, upend the industry and have every user flocking back to us. And every time, I erase it because I don't think you guys want to hear any more teases. When it is hitting and what it entails is not something I'm allowed to touch on yet, but it is approaching quickly, and we are absolutely slammed with what needs to happen prior to the launch. Personally, I'm beefing up the resources of the customer teams in advance of what we project will be a huge surge of both new users checking OnLive out for the first time, as well as the old, coming back into the service to see how we've improved it.

I chuckled in reading the "Nate Thread" over the past few months, in seeing the Speculatron 8000 fire up and spew out possibilities of what we could be working on. BTW, no one nailed it.

I find it interesting that you guys are commenting about the energy of OL2, or lack there of. Nothing could be farther from the truth. As I write this, there is a energetic hustle happening all around me. In fact Cpt. Waffles just sprinted by me for some reason..oh wait, he was chasing his dog. All kidding aside, Waffles and the other engineers are in a state of frenetic ingenuity and productivity meeting the date we've outlined for the next major release.

I know you guys are still trying to find closure about the smaller announcement I teased for after E3. That one is still coming, but has been delayed due to circumstances out of our control. I'm looking forward to being able to crack that one open for you. Personally, I think you guys are going to learn what we are doing, reflect on the past year, and say to yourself, "Ah!..that's why they <insert some perceived shortfall>"

My apologies for not being able to give you more information over the course of the past year. In order to guarantee success, we had to make sure that our plans were secret until we are ready to spin up the media coverage.

We ABSOLUTELY cannot wait for the day we can hold up what we've built and say, "OnLive's dead? Yeeaah..not so much."

So until then, sit back, play some indies, and know we'll have this bad boy out to you rapidly, speedily, promptly, shortly, quickly, instantly, anon, betimes, fast, forthwith, hastily, lickety-split, on time, posthaste, pronto, quick, short, any day, before long, by and by, coming down the pike, ere long, expeditiously, fleetly, in a little while, in due time, and in short order.]

OnLive has much to prove so I'll remain cautiously optimistic until they finally reveal whatever they've been working on. A little surprised no one "nailed it" in the Nate thread seeing how that is about 22 pages filled with all different kinds of different ideas.

World Warriors of OnLive Tournament

OnLiveFansForum user Ted_Daniel is hosting a Super Street Fighter 4 AE tournament complete with cash prizes and free games! Some OnLive staff are expected to participate. Unfortunately the trial OnLive provides does not allow online play so trialers will not be able to enter.

World Warriors of Onlive Tournament!

Hey guys,

I want to go ahead and set the date and make this official. Remember there is no entry fee, the only thing you need is to have a copy of Super Street Fighter 4! So mark it down on your calender. I will host the first World Warriors of Onlive Tournament, there will be cash prizes and games to be gifted. So lets break it down.

The event will start 2 p.m. central mountain time.

1st place - Will be your choice of $100 visa gift card or $50 card with a $49.99 gifted game!
2nd place- A $40 card or $20 with a $19.99 game
3rd- place- A $15 card (That I would use to buy Rouge Legacy....I mean have you played that game!?!?)

Rules:

The tournament is double elimination, meaning if you lose you will move to losers bracket for a chance to stay in the tournament. If you lose in losers bracket you will be eliminated.

Every match will be 2 out of 3 rounds. And every set will be 2 out of 3 matches.

Losers Finals and Winners Finals will be done in a best of 5 set.

The one who moves on from losers finals will face the player in winners for our Grand finals. The one coming from losers must win the best of 5 set twice, once to reset the bracket and a second to win the tournament. The player coming from winners must win once.

All results of the match will need to be sent to me. And if somehow the match drops for whatever reason you can have the option of playing the match again. If player one had a round won, then you can either reset it by starting the

Feel free to take part in the event by throwing your hat in the ring or simply spectating the event live! For full details check here and here.

Dinput Controllers Now Supported?

Seems OnLive snuck in a welcome update sometime within the past month. Prior to this the only controllers that would work a hundred percent reliably with the client were the OnLive universal controller and the Xbox 360 wired/wireless controller. It seems controller support has been expanded to include Dinput controllers now (Xbox 360 is Xinput and almost all PC games support this now vice the older Dinput). I can't confirm this works with all Dinput controllers but previously my Logitech Rumblepad 2 never registered any of the buttons but now it works perfectly without any additional setup. This was only tested with the PC client, I'm unsure if all this pertains to the MicroConsole and Mac client.

New OnLive Blog Post

Guten tag from Cologne!

This week on the OnLive Blog we’re heading to Cologne, Germany, for an onsite report from our OnLive UK team direct from GamesCom.

GamesCom is a cross between PAX and E3, but with more beer and sausage. This year over 150,000 gamers are expected to descend on the Koln Messe exhibition hall for a 5-day gamefest.

The excitement is growing as gamers from all over Europe pour into this historic city. Big publishers like Warner Bros, Square Enix, Sega, and Ubisoft are showing off their latest releases, and we may even see some announcements for new games coming next year. Yesterday, GamesCom opened its gates to stampeding hordes desperate to get hands-on with the latest games – and we do literally mean stampede!

Team OnLive will be here meeting with game publishers and developers, and of course checking in with some of the highlights from the show floor. On Saturday morning, as the doors close on the event’s business area, James Beaven and I will be packing away the demo gear and breaking out the lycra for an epic, insanely long 352-mile cycle ride for the games industry charity, GamesAid.

352 miles doesn’t sound too bad – unless you try and do it in three-and-a-half days! Yup, instead of flying back from Germany to the UK like normal people James and I, with four other similarly deranged game execs, will be taking the long way home.

Starting from their hotel in Cologne, Team OnLive will be spending up to 12 hours a day in the saddle, across four countries to the ferry port of Dieppe, France. After a short crossing, we’ll complete the last 40 miles into the UK’s seaside town of Brighton.

We promise to do their best to report in with updates, locations and photos from the ride. We’ve also devised a pain-o-meter to help describe the levels of soreness we’ll experience over the three-and-a-half days.

Wish us good luck.

Bruce Grove, General Manager OnLive UK

http://blog.onlive.com/

Notice the four publishers they list were fairly big supporters of OnLive 1.0 and they didn't specifically mention two huge publishers...Activision and EA. Hopefully whatever they showcase is a hint of what's to come. Also meeting with the publishers/developers could give some valuable insight on their views on OnLive and their interest on developing on the service. Good luck to them on their bike ride!

Trainz Simulator 12 Removed From the Service

OnLive Nate posted the reason for the removal:

Trainz began performing an 'integrity check' at launch with lasted longer than 90 seconds, the threshold for game launch failure. We are working with the developer to have this check removed, until then we've removed it rather than having you guys hit a G40 100% of the time it is launched.

I hope the announcement is PlayStation 4 compatibility.

It's sounding to me more like a complete overhaul of the current OnLive (look, client, and dev tools). Hopefully also a partnership and/or support from big players in the industry. Whatever's in place right now is Steve Perlman's OnLive, whatever comes next is what Gary Lauder has in mind (OnLive 2.0 as it's referred to internally). While PS4 compatibility would be awesome I just don't see it happening especially since Sony has already heavily invested in Gaikai.

hope the announcement is a free playpass

If you have SS4AE on the service you can try your luck and maybe win a free PlayPass or two by entering the tournament ;).

unfortunately every one of those things didnt make the company money, in fact it caused them to lose it.

Also I never noticed this but apparently you can get a refund no questions asked after purchasing a game for up to 2 weeks IF you haven't played the game. According to the agreement when you purchase a game...

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CANCEL WITHOUT PENALTIES AND WITHOUT INDICATING ANY MOTIVE AND OBTAIN A REFUND BY CONTACTING ONLIVE WITHIN 14 CALENDAR DAYS OF THE DAY FOLLOWING THE DATE OF PURCHASE. THIS RIGHT ENDS IMMEDIATELY IF YOU PLAY THE GAME.

I'm assuming the limitation is to disuade people from buying a game, beating it, then requesting a refund. It's good most games offer trials though so you can still test the game out before purchasing it. Pretty cool and OnLive is one of the few digital services I've seen that offers a refund after purchase.

According to OnLiveFansForum user Kenneloth the OnLive app is now available in the EU Google Play Store. I'm surprised this went unannounced. Also signups for the SSF4AE tournament are going great! We've almost hit 20 with still over 2 weeks left.

NVM, according to OnLive Nate:

First off, Probes may be extradited due to his grouping the UK in the EU.

Secondly, while I'm glad you guys are psyched about it, I looked into this, and as far as I can tell, we made no changes to the Google Play Store configuration of our published app. Needless to say, no changes have been made to our supported commerce regions either. That's not to say it won't, but there are perilous legal waters one must negotiate in order to open up commercial operations in new countries. We have an amazingly thorough legal team that understands the implications of such expansions. When it is deemed that we are in the clear to do it, you can bet we will.

My best guess is that this was made available last year as we expanded to Belgium.

Tournament is going strong! We currently have 22 people signed up (sign up here). Ted_Daniel has set up the bracket (here) and will make changes as needed. The event is set to begin at 2PM CST on September 14th so there's still plenty of time to sign up. Ted_Daniel also reports we have a sponsor for the tournament that will be adding to the first prize!

Well guys I have a quick update! It seems our friends at http://www.itsmuchmore.com are interested in the tournament and have decided to help out by being a sponsor of the event! Happy days! So give them a shout out on their twitter (@ItsMuchMore) or check out the site!

Anyway they are adding to the first place prize! As of right now it's still being worked out, but you know it'll be good. I'll keep you guys updated and let you know how everything unfolds. Be sure to check them out and say thanks or like them on facebook.

The tournament is still looking strong! We have 22 people signed up! So all of those entered, be sure to make time for it on the 14th and I'll see you all there. SHOOOOORYUKEN!

I'll only care when the news drops. For a lackluster service that's lost my attention, an announcement of an announcement is meaningless. They're not Apple.

I understand the concern however keep in mind this "announcement of an announcement" is not coming directly from OnLive nor through any of their official channels (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Nate does poke his head out every now and then at OnLiveFansForum (an unofficial forum) but I'm sure what he can say about what they've working on is heavily restricted (NDA's and such). I do appreciate what little he does slip out though. I'm very interested to see what they've been cooking up this past year since their presence has been very subdued. I'm not sure if this announcement is the "big" news Nate was teasing coming in the Fall but hopefully whatever it is will reinvigorate your interest in the service!
