Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | July 2013 | Slow Month, Fast Games

Except the Sound Shapes platinum is a horrible thing that I don't wish upon anybody. It actually killed my enjoyment of the game. Death mode is disgusting and cheap.

I had a ridiculous amount of fun killing time with Death Mode challenges until I beat them. I got it done in just a couple of days after release. The jump in that game is tuned to perfection imo and the timing for those levels was such a sweet spot. The music made it easier and more enjoyable to do, I think.

I honestly had more trouble with Beat School the first time I tried it, and waited til the end of the week to plow through them. I haven't bothered buying any of the DLC since that's all they bring to the table (aside from user creation assets). I wish the devs would have made their own level/challenge pack at some point w/ new artists, because I wasn't really interested in community levels that always felt unpolished by comparison.

Oh, come on. Death mode wasn't that bad (or hard, for the matter). The only bad thing on Sound Shapes is the lack of albuns DLC.

Death mode was completely randomized. People that got past death mode were lucky because there is no skill involved. You just have to reset over and over until the notes spawn close enough to each other so you can pass it. Think what you will, te game itself is nice. But by copping out and putting in death mode instead of more levels, the game never made itself back into my memory card after I beat it.

What? Every moving object is synchronized to the music, and the music is the same every time. Nothing is ever random. You run the same route repeatedly and try to nail it without a single mistake.

False, notes spawn randomly. We're talking about death mode here.

Stealth Bastard is up on the store for anyone who preordered, or wanted to pick it up. Nice that they have been updating the store at a decent hour lately.

The spawn points are always the same, though. They spawn based on where you're at. That's why your route matters. If you're all the way left, a note will spawn to up, up-right, or right depending on the arena's layout. It will never spawn where you are or in the same spot in succession. All you do is keep your timing up and anticipate that they'll be to either side of you. The more you repeat it, the faster your reactions get.

The problem for me is on the death mode level with lasers (for example), you have to jump down and then up to get the notes between three platforms. When I tried to do it sometimes the notes would spawn all the way at the top whole I was at the bottom platform. This would make me lose a lot of time with the back and forth.

Is there anyway to stop that from happening?

But all I wanted was Smash on a Sony console :(

We all did... :l

Has they just copied the HP mode it would have been all good. But they wanted to pretend that it was a very original idea, so it turned meh.

As someone who beat Death Mode on both PS3 and Vita, I have received so many impossible spawns. Replaying the same level 20 times can mean all the notes spawn right next to me and I can beat it in 10 seconds, or all the notes spawn on opposite ends of the map and even with no errors I will wind up with only 2/3 of the required notes to win. It was so incredibly frustrating and I strongly regret doing it...twice...

I dunno, guys. Anytime I got one that lead me to the opposite side of the arena, I was always certain some momentum I had in my overzealous jump to the side I was on, or some millisecond mistake I made could have still let me nail it.

It seems the Atlus deals continue at the Vita store:

Persona, Persona 2: IS and P3P are at $9.99 each and Persona 4:Golden is at $19.99

I was planning on getting the P4G cart but that price is damn good, so I might just get the digital version instead.

Yeah, pretty much this.

Some spawn combinations where just impossible to get, and that sucks, it´s incredibly lame and frustrating.

That's not how death mode worked for me. The notes locations were completely random, and most of the time literally impossible to beat in the time specified. Worst game design I've seen in years.

Damn well still going to try
From what I know, scanning a coupon voids a price match, and price matching voids a previously scanned coupon. You'd need a manager who either likes you or doesn't know the rules to show up and price adjust it down to $10 for you.

The deal getter in me is screaming at me to buy Fifa 13....and I have never owned a single soccer game in my life...but $14!! It's $30 everywhere I look! GAAAAAH -_-

Man, that's a sweet offer. I have P4G in cart but I think I'll get the digital copy now.

Looking forward to Chaos Rings later also.

No skill involved? Bullshit.

You still needed enough skill to actually clear a stage. Those "impossible" spawn patterns served as training in preparation for a more realistic pattern.

It's actually pretty good design. But alas some people just can't accept randomness, they somehow believe that it invalidates all skill.

Stealth Inc is fun. I still have to get used to the feel of the platforming because I was playing Guacamelee all day yesterday, so it feels off. The game seems VERY cool so far, though.

It's up.

Playing Stealth Inc, it's awesome, much better than the version I have on my Android.

Agreed though I have already begun to hit some sections that seem pretty tough in the 3rd sector. If your a fan of platformers, and or Stealth games I would recommend it easily. I really like the music aswell.

So I'm in Europe and it would be cool to pick up some EU exclusive Vita releases. Any recommendations? Off the top of my head, I can think of...

MotoGP 13
MUD
Earth Defense Force (no physical in US)
Everybody's Golf (different name)

Do we know if Dragon's Crown has an online pass?

I can import it for around £30, which is what it'll be when launched here in the UK. But I might just wait for the UK launch if I wouldn't be able to play online with an imported copy.

Thanks to anyone who can help

Death Mode was bullshit. I had the skill, so yes, there was some skill involved. But having to grind the damn level to get a pattern of notes that's actually feasible in the time limit is RIDICULOUS. Making a game where you cannot achieve the win condition in any way is just stupid.

I wasn't planning on getting it but I'm hearing good things about it. But between the unexpected Persona games sale and Chaos Rings I'm almost at my limit for the month.

Decisions....

My second time around on the Death Mode took almost as long as the first, although I already had the skill for the levels required. The spawns were so incredibly ridiculous that, while skill is involved, luck is way more important.

For fuck's sake, the damn thing is called DEATH MODE, guys. OF COURSE it's going to be unfair to some degree. Personally I had lots of fun playing it, I didn't mind the impossible patterns, I saw them as practice runs while carefully paying attention for a doable pattern to come by. It was all part of the metagame involved, you had to wait for a doable pattern, and then you had to not fuck it up when the chance came by,

There's nothing wrong with randomness as long as you're having fun. Not every single thing in a video game has to be fully deterministic.

Yes there is.
Again, there should never be a "THIS PATTERN IS COMPLETELY UNABLE TO BE COMPLETED".

Random in things like SH:BoM where the order of rooms and what's in them is not set? That's good. Increases variety, but doesn't prevent the player from being able to complete it.

Random things like Death Mode where I sat there for 5 minutes just doing "retry" because the game refused to generate a pattern that could be completed in the time limit? Terrible.

People aren't saying Death Mode is supposed to be easy. People are saying you should always have the chance to complete a Death Mode level. At least that's what I'm saying.

What was the Pinball Arcade update??
It's nice that PS+ auto-downloads updates, but it's annoying that you miss the description then. :/

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.

...I take it you're not a fan of roguelikes? :p

I'm honestly not sure how many patterns in Death Mode were truly impossible, though. Every time I thought that I'd put the game down and come back when my hands and mind were less tired, or figure out some new technique that would help me get the notes faster.

No real way to tell though, I guess...

I really didn't think it was that bad. It was actually the first platinum I've ever gotten! Took a little over three days...

It's really just like any roguelike (or something similar like FTL), where you are often confronted to impossible scenarios. Only difference is that while a game of FTL can last half an hour, Death Mode only lasts a few seconds.

FTL is hard as fuck (at least on normal difficulty) and is sometimes completely unfair, and yet is one of the best indie games of the past year. People love it. It's possible to finish it, but you have to be very skilled AND very lucky. And yet you go and claim that this is wrong, that a game where impossible scenarios can happen is broken. Well, FTL fans prove otherwise.
