Don't really understand the outrage on this site. The PS4 may use 2.5-3.5GB of RAM. So what? The games will still come out, fun games will be fun, pretty games will still be pretty, and crappy games will still be crappy.

As long as games are fun, I could really give 2 fucks about how much memory is being used. I'm still having fun playing PS3 and Wii U games right now.

Why is this a surprise to anyone?
SONY is, first and foremost, a repackager. They go around shopping for tech that other companies have invented. Their engineering department is comprised mostly of "checklist engineers", meaning that they only check that every component is where they should be. They don't design the next memory technology like Samsung does, they don't design GPUs like AMD and Nvidia, they don't design CPUs like intel. All they do is buy these components from the above manufacturers and check that all the technology is in the right place.

Hahahahha

You're right! It's so simple!

"Current PlayStation 4 dev kits have a "Game Memory Budget Mode" in the debug settings featuring two options: normal and large."

Maybe this will change with future development hardware revisions. Also the 360 dev kits have similar or close, only difference is the amount of memory 512MB-1GB

Falls in line for the Xbox One. These systems have some advance OS, so it's believable with the streaming and having your friend take over for you. That's built into the OS is it not?

I don't think I'll be using any of those features when I pick up a PS4, so I'm just getting screwed out of RAM for games.

Smokey has a point, the RAM allocation is used as a negative in every PS4/X1 thread and now there are people defending Sony doing the same thing. This kind of stuff happens on message boards.

This isn't even a fact, it's a rumor.

And there are only a handful of posters here who are saying that this is a good thing.

Just to be clear isn't that the kz slide from weeks ago? They had their sleuths on the case and this is the big news? They are drawing conclusions on final hardware based on an in development title with debug or whatever options turned on to reveal memory usage. Seems bulletproof.

Months in fact, and predates the dev kit memory bump. GG even said that they were targeting a 4GB GDDR5 PS4 with those slides, that 4.5 number was on dev kits and was going to get optimized down on the way to release to fit a 3.5GB available for games PS4.

It is bad news if true. The bump in GDDR5 from 4-8 GB is costing Sony over $50 per console which means it's costing us over $50 per console. Reserving 3.5GB of this memory hurts Sony and our "bang for the buck" more than MS reserving 3GB of DDR3.

I'm on Sony's side this gen but this seems ridiculous if true.
And what about kinect, it's costing us the same as the machine and I for one don't want any part of it.

Do you REALLY think this is final? I'm pretty sure they are simply trying to make sure all functionality works right out of the box. Besides, the third party developers aren't going to be willing to do anything better on either the Bone or the PS4, and Sony's first party developers are wizards. So what is the problem here, exactly?

Over-reaction is hilarious though. I expect in the long term that memory availability will grow to 6... I always expected more of a 6/2 split as opposed to the ridiculous 7/1 numbers being thrown around

Well Well looks like Xbox One isn't so week after all. Sony now has 4.5 gigs of memory for gaming. Xbox One has 5 gigs plus 32 mb of the fastest ram available for gaming. Poor PS4.

I called it! I knew 1GB was utter bullshit when they first reported that. Everything Sony has been doing has been nothing but PR stunts just to 1up MS this year. Nothing but Knee Jerk reactions. Eventually the truth was bound to surface.

Guys, we know you like competing consoles, but you're being more ridiculous than some of the sony faithful around here.

They have one developer source showing them documents from Sony saying 4.5GB for game use. And aside from that they have other sources saying there is 1GB flexible space. The KZSF slides merely attest to the suprisingly low amount of RAM being used relative to what the PS4 has, which this can possibly now explain.
The same sources that told them the video capture would last for 7 minutes or that surprise increase in X1 bandwith?

Not quite. RAM isn't the only difference between consoles.

PS4 would still be stronger, but it's negligible enough in terms of what the output would actually be overall to not really be a bullet point in making a decision.

Its basically all about games now if this is true. That and the 100 dollar difference if thats a big deal to you.

Amazing first post.

I'll wait for Sony's statement before I start flood the Sony HQ with my tears.

Hopefully, they're just reserving 1, 2 GB of ram more than speculated for now in an effort to make the whole OS run smooth. It's a brand new OS for the machine anyway, and this will help it from turning into a chugging mess.

If it isn't then well, crap. I know first party developers can do wonders even with this limitation but the same can't be same for the third parties.

Not buying this until Sony confirms it. Doesn't seem worthwhile unless the sudden increase in RAM from 4 to 8 was due to the amount they had allocated before not being enough for all the OS features they wanted.

3.5GB for tje OS doesn't make any sense. The PS4 originally had 4GB and switched to 8 because they wanted to beat Microsoft. Devs only had 0.5GB to work with then!?

They still have more ram, faster ram...8gb gddr ram and more overall power..nothing has changed other than allocation..maybe..and its still a more favorable set up for gaming if true.

Though id like to see that OS number lower

More ram? I thought 8gb was 8gb. Anyways, its not about that. Its about Sony not being honest upfront. First they report 1GB for the OS and now this. Its deceptive just to drive up hype for the system.

It is not truth your are spouting it is pure bullshit coming our of your mouth just for attention and to rile members up

How? Original it was 1GB for OS and now its 3.5GB. When we all knew out the game that 3GB on Xbox One was reserved for the OS. Its just PR lies from the beginning to out do whatever MS is doing. If you cant see, its not my fault.

As someone very loosely following this, I'm going to try and figure out what happened.

1. Someone posts the tweet by the director of Eurogamer Spain where he said PS4 Memory Drama.
2. Shitstorm begins.
3. The director clarifies his words on the "drama".
4. Shitstorm intensifies.
5. It is revealed PS4's OS somehow uses a ton of memory, making it nearly on par with Xbone.
6. Shitstorm intensifies.

Am I right?

So... They added 4 Gig of EXTRA RAM just for the OS? I'll wait till Sony or a reliable source can confirm this. I used to love DF, but lately they've become worse and worse.

Please put a cork in that bullshit. Sony never reported anything officially, unlike MS.

Reading between the lines here it very much seems DF is taking "current dev tools specify the 4.5/1GB setup while the OS is being finalized" to mean "see, the PS4 uses just as much RAM as the Xbox One", when it really means that the OS and tools are still a work in progress, and Sony would rather your launch game not run out of memory and crash to desktop.
I'm not hugely worried, over the lifespan of the PS3 Sony was able to reduce the OS memory footprint by ~75%.

It'll probably be the same difference as this gen. Key difference is the OS's, $100, and Kinect 2s implementation..

In other words for all we know it'll be neck and neck again

And what about kinect, it's costing us the same as the machine and I for one don't want any part of it.

But I'm not buying an XBO. I'm only saying that using $50-70 of components to bloat out the OS is fucking stupid. What was the point in upping the 4GB RAM at the behest of Gearbox if they took most of it away again?
