FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

First i was late to the fridayton thread, and now late to this thread. Hilarious to see these threads.

However, i'd like to know what could be the reason of this 3.5 GB. It seems they are keeping a safezone. But why soooo much (if true)?

How? Original it was 1GB for OS and now its 3.5GB. When we all knew out the game that 3GB on Xbox One was reserved for the OS. Its just PR lies from the beginning to out do whatever MS is doing. If you cant see, its not my fault.

Keep it up with the bullshit and lies and you might end up being banned, that would do us all a favor.

Consumer Electronics companies tend to have incompetent engineers compared to manufacturers.
Consumer Electronics companies' engineering departments comprise of "checklist engineers". These are 2nd rate engineers from some no-name state school.
Manufacturing companies' engineers comprise of MIT grads who design the next generation memory or CPU architecture.

What the fuck is this?!?

Are you fucking kidding me? There are some here that will be personally offended by this.

If true, sony are probably playing safe, just on.case, but doubt that they just upgraded from 4 to 8 gb 5 months ago to reserve almost half of that for non gaming purposes

So now the RAM advantage is gone and MS has Kinect in it's back pocket. Not looking good.

The RAM advantage is not gone... Although it's somewhat less than if the PS4 had 7 GB allocated for games, the bandwidth advantage across the entire 5.5 GB memory allocation for games still puts the memory advantage in PS4's favor.

The source is not the KZSF slides.

That's merely a old piece of evidence that corroborates the information their sources are telling them.

I hope this is Sony's way of saying "Look, we're still refining the OS and trying to determine how much RAM is necessary. Don't go over this much for now. We'll free up more when we have it nailed down more." As a reaction to how not doing that with the PS3 limited the OS later. It better get some back for devs in 18 months.

Not quite. RAM isn't the only difference between consoles.

No, but it certainly narrows the gap when weighed with the other specs. If this is true, I am not expecting to see a tremendous difference in exclusives. PS4 will still have the edge, but I don't think it will be mind blowing.

For the record, I plan to pick up a PS4 before I ever even think about getting an Xbox One.

I was expecting 2 GB for the OS, maybe even 3 GB, but 3.5 GB? That sounds a bit ridiculous. And what's this about there possibly being another GB devs can reclaim, "depending on availability"?

I bet the developers are glad that Sony doubled the memory. It must have been tough developing next gen games with only 512mb of game memory.

Not really sure what their OS is doing to need that kind of footprint. MS has all the Kinect stuff, the switching, voice nav, etc. Sonys OS looks fairly basic...I would expect 1gb, but not the 2.5-3.5gb usage. Maybe they want to do more steaming later on. This could bode well for stuff like gaikai(sp?).

PS4 would still be stronger, but it's negligible enough in terms of what the output would actually be overall to not really be a bullet point in making a decision.

Its basically all about games now if this is true. That and the 100 dollar difference if thats a big deal to you.

Having a GPU with 50% more power and more bandwidth is not negligible even if the PS4 and XB1 have the same amount of ram to play with .

It doesn't corroborate anything though, as it comes from old SDK documentation. It even pre-dates the RAM bump. Using it at all shows a fundamental misunderstanding on Eurogamer's part, and puts their ability to even read this "leaked SDK" into doubt.

OS multitasking or maybe even running higher intensive apps in the BG. I'm not saying games on top of games but there will be enough headroom for a fast OS.

There are holes in the story though so I can't comment on all of it.

More ram? I thought 8gb was 8gb. Anyways, its not about that. Its about Sony not being honest upfront. First they report 1GB for the OS and now this. Its deceptive just to drive up hype for the system.

So um, what confirmation do we have that they were deceiving us? DF pulling info from a slide and reporting it to EG? This would be disappointing if true, but in the other case of the MS indie bit (and many of their other PR missteps), we were receiving confirmation from CBOAT or other insiders. Who has confirmed this so far from Sony internal, or knowledge of Sony internal?

A little early to call them deceptive without some type of confirmation.

Some changes =/= 7x larger OS. That's a full rebuild, which doesn't happen quickly at all.

This doesn't make any sense to me.

Originally the PS4 was destined to have 4GB GDDR5 RAM.

On the last minute, Cerny surprises everyone and we're blessed with 8GB. And now news has come to surface that 3.5GB is reserved for the OS.

How does something like this happen so quickly?

So Sony didnt come out and say that 1GB was resevered for the OS now?

It's time to step away from the keyboard. Seriously, enough already.

Tweet Yosp..... Rally the militia... Gather the troops, grab your pitch forks and torches..
Someone get Cerny to comment on this....

really though, the specs are still awesome...

This is terrible news, I do not think I will be able to enjoy a game that uses so little RAM as the PS4. I have not even attempted to play 'The Last of Us' due to how little RAM it uses. I have installed 32GB in my PC so I can enjoy FTL. Looks like I will be waiting for the PS5.

I would like to thank all the OS and system developers in this thread for explaining why the PS4 does not require 3.5GB for the OS.

The video capture thing was a conference recording where someone mispoke.

The X1 bandwidth thing is up in the air still.

Shouldn't a site like Eurogamer check their sources before posting such essential infos? So its either hit or miss with this article. Im still not entirely convinced... This smells like fishing for clicks. The announcement of an article via twitter... I dont know.

Sony and Microsoft should arrange a exchange.
Exchange Phil Harrison for Jonathan Blow.
Spy work is good, but cover blow is unavoidable.

Almost triple the normal ram use of W8 for something surely nowhere near as complex, wow.

Doubt anyone will care - 5.5 is probably more then most devs will ever need, I'm just surprised by how much the OS is allocated.

Cerny promised Ram but now the developers have to cram. The Emperor has no clothes. Diminishing returns, I welcome thee!

Don't really care, I don't think a lot of developers were going to use all that anyways. Sony is probably just using what they think is best while anticipating what third parties need from a practical standpoint.
