Looking the WiiU fail I'd like to ask Nintendo if Wii was the worst thing ever they did. They had 3 amazing years and then threw all away.
How can they turnaround? It's way worst than the Sony's PS3 nightmare.

So you think spending 2+ years and millions of dollars to develop Wii U Fit is a smart strategy?

Nintendo's whole approach to casual gaming is archaic. You do not take the standard software development lifecycle approach for how traditional games are made and apply them to casual games. It's slow and expensive with even bigger risk.

When you compare Nintendo's model for casual games to the app store and google play, it's a shining example of incompetence.

First off, how do you know how much they're spending on Wii Fit U? I never said it was a smart strategy as I think it should have come out earlier, but because they've delayed it - it kind of fucked them over.

So wait, you want them to spew out shit at a fast pace? Come on now, that's not how they work. If that was the case, we'd see a drop in quality - like with most iOS and Android games.

That's the most adorable spin I've ever seen. It's like a dog with a broken leg trying as hard as he can to stand up and walk.

I didn't say that. I said the wii sold to people with no interest in PLAYING games.

stay with me here.

buying wii sports or wii fit to enjoy the novelty of motion controls and waggle isn't really an audience who likes playing games. this is an audience attracted to the novelty of motion control. there's a big difference. People who fire up a tablet to fool around with songpop or candy crush for 15 minutes and nothing else aren't really an audience who like playing games either. it's simply the most convenient way to waste time for 15 minutes.

people who enjoy playing games *gasp* keep buying them! This didn't happen with the wii.

The Wii's attach rate is only respectable because nearly all of it's software was sold up until 2010...then sales collapsed and their audience got tired of playing games. This has never happened to any other console in gaming history, and didn't happen to their two closest competitors.

Did the audience "get tired" of playing games? Or is it because Nintendo basically abandoned the system at that point?

I'd argue the latter. The audience was buying games (and lots of them) up until that release schedule went barren.

On another point, that's another frustrating aspect to this. The release schedule for the Wii was barren for the last two years of its life. What was Nintendo doing during that time? Did they put literally all their dev teams on 3DS?

The WiiU is a worse product right now than the PS3 and 360, largely due to the fact that it launched 7 years after them, and it is higher priced

No wonder it is selling atrociously.

Just pointing out that you meant Q3 2012, Q4 2012 and Q1 2013… or am I missing something?

Q1 2014 is shorthand for "Q1 2013/2014" or "Q1 of the fiscal year ending March 31st, 2014."

More accurate would be Five Months from November on. I'm pretty flabbergasted they didn't revise forecasts. I guess Iwata and co are just in this for as many paychecks as possible before being angrily removed at this point if they're to lie to investors faces at that degree.

I'm expecting a slight bump for Q2 (0.25 million from July through September).

That would leave us at 8.59 million consoles for Nintendo to ship in six months.

Wii U estimated worldwide sell-through is around 3 million. So Nintendo will need to dramatically stimulate retail interest in the Wii U to the point that retailers all around the world request an average of 1.43 million consoles every month IN ADDITION TO selling-through the 660,000 consoles around the world that are currently collecting dust in retailer shelves.

The projected ramp-up in retailer interest is just too sudden and dramatic to meet Nintendo's retail expectations. It's wildly unrealistic and downright absurd.

Honestly I think this will be last Nintendo console in living room.Probably they will go full portable from next console.

Out of 160k shipped units, how many have they sold?

They could have easily sold more than the number shipped this past quarter, but that sold number is coming from their original launch shipment meaning they have only just begun t sell through their launch shipment from 9 months ago.

This is probably why ASDA in the UK jumped ship for now.

This is bad. Nintendo has to do something big.

Can it be saved?

I don't think so at this point. Mario Kart and Smash Bros (two games that really should have been there at launch to draw in both audiences) will give it some bumps, but I don't see it being long-term success.

Portable with wired/wireless TV-out I would assume (hope). Only one platform to develop for, Nintendo teams don't have to be split across resources like they are now.

Wouldn't surprise me if it got mentioned at E3 2014.

Big ?
To late for that now.

Ahhhh. 3DS doom and gloom all over again. I'll enjoy Pikmin 3 and those other Nintendo releases while the numbers continue to drop. Won't stop me from enjoying what is available.

As others have been pointing out, the problem with people saying "You can't judge yet! Wait for...." is that there is only so much physical room in a B&M shop. It's not just that the XB1 and the PS4 will take up a lot of advertising and mindshare, it's that stores such as Gamestop, Target and Walmart have to find somewhere to put the consoles, the games and the accessories. And if I'm in charge of making that decision, I damn well know where that space is coming from.

So you already have a console that has the stench of death on it, and now it'll be difficult to find in a store. Unless Nintendo can demonstrate to these retailers why they should make the effort pushing the Wii U when all it's done for them is gather dust on their shelves, pretty soon it'll be only those who are actively hunting it down who will be able to find it. And at that point it doesn't matter how many games are out, the general market will never know about them and the system is dead.

I'll be very interested to see what the average Gamestop will look like this November. I wouldn't be shocked if the Wii has a more prominent placement and more shelf space than the Wii U.

Once again, Nintendo depending on Nintendo Directs and the Miiverse to get the word out is preaching to the choir. That's not the audience they need to reach.

How about a bundle with Nintendoland, NSMBU, ZombieU and Pikmin 3 for $300? Obviously that won't save the system by itself, but it's something at least.

There are no color or bundle options for a 3DS in North America. They don't even try to sell the damn thing.

There's also virtually no 3rd party support for the handheld in the West.

And outside of a couple titles, lots of the 3rd party support from Japan never makes it over to the US.

It's not surprising :/

if they still want to do hardware, this (& i'd definitely be in)...

otherwise - ps4/vita :) ...

Nintendo still "expecting" to have 9 million LTD sold by the end of the year?

I know Mario is coming but only in December, at this rate 6 million LTD would be amazing for them unless they plan on making a huge price cut then I don't see how they expect 9 million LTD they are just lying to themselves.

Wii U is a flop, just abandon it in 4 years please Nintendo.

With no games up until now, who'd have thunk it...

Edit: Good to see the 3DS doing well though, healthy software figures.

Nintendo is "expecting" to have 12.45 million shipped LTD by next March.

There isn't just one problem that if solved will fix all...

Name, box design, unnappealling main hook, unattractive price for what yout get, retro level online infrastructure, weak software lineup, shit marketing.....

Nintendo will need to spend big and heavy.

Diddy Kong is MIA.

I still want a WiiU but I can wait for a big price drop. Better luck next gen, Nintendo....I still can't believe the WiiU is only 10 months old; it feels like it's been released a lot longer than that.

What Nintendo could do is turn it into the ultimate Nintendo box, even moreso than the Wii:

- Get an account system working. Cross play between 3DS and Wii U

- Get those virtual console games out. All of them. SNES, N64, GC, GBA, GB. there's a shedload of titles that are must buys. They're there ready to be sold!! Playable on the tablet. ONLY available in the Wii U store, but cross play on your 3DS via your account.

I guess that could be one easy thing that could spur at least some interest in the console, albeit not in the wider mainstream.

Though to be fair, Western 3rd parties have never supported handhelds very much to begin with. But Nintendo's inability to create new franchises for a wide audience like they did with Brain Training and Nintendogs isn't helping. So the 3DS underperforms everyplace that isn't Japan - where it gets all the big name portable titles by default.

I really doubt that. I just expect that next-gen Nintendo will be a lot like what we've seen with Sony going into the PS4. Nintendo will move around the chairs and bring people in that have a bigger vision of consoles than the current major players at Nintendo. They need new people in that will be aggressive and friendly when it comes to trying to gain third party support. They also need people in that understand that you can be innovative while also understanding that sometimes other companies have done things well enough that you should just follow them instead of assuming that different is better.

There are way too many glaring errors with the Wii U for the people responsible for it to stay in place for the next console cycle.
