iOS Gaming August 2013: The Curious Case of no Subtitle

It is pretty awesome. A nice mix of puzzles and exploration. It doesn't require much effort until the last two sets of levels, but I haven't really minded the lack of difficulty. It's a charming, laid back experience. The art and the fun of interacting with the various environments have been enough to hold my interest. For a buck no one should pass it up.

I tried to buy it last night in prep for the hopeful iPhone aquisition but.....

(From the last thread)

Suffering the security question thing where I can't remember them. I guess the only way to reset is to go through support?

Anyone help or do I have to call in to get this fixed?

I've tried all the possible passwords for year of birth and place of work and there is no other answers to the questions possible. It's preventing me from linking my newer info or even PP info so I can get Tiny Thief.

Haven't bought it. So many $2.99 games lately... I like it, as too many games come out at $.99, but that price is a little outside of impulse buy range. What made you think I bought it? I bought and liked (not loved) the first one, but...

Yay for August! I wanna take this opportunity to thank Tunesmith for all the hard work you've put into creating these OTs. They look marvelous!

I caved and bought it due to all the glowing reviews online. It's ok, they added a deep tricks system that lets you choose more moves to unlock as you level up. And the game is as gorgeous as ever.

Also, I think the subtitle to one of these monthly threads should be something like "mobile ≠ social" at some point, it just pains me to see that pretty much everyone thinks so and thus ignores the great things that get released every week ;-;.

Problem is, a serious subtitle would attract a bunch of trolls.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers updated yesterday with two new levels (free) and two new heroes (not free). The new levels introduce merpeople and crabpeople as enemies--It's basically like when they added the merfolk race in the Warcraft III expansion.

As annoyed as I was with the majority of heroes being IAP, I love how they're following the original's model of putting out free levels every couple months.

Do you still have access to the email associated with your Apple ID? You should be able to reset your password through it.

If you can't do that or remember your security questions, then contacting support would be your last resort.

I yearn for a good Roguelike on iPad, tried so far:

100 Rogues: broken, buggy mess, shallow
Brogue: Crap UI on iPad, controls are fiddly, could use sound (heathen I know)
Legends of Fargoal: bit shallow, waiting on the sequel

Most of the others are not universal. Dungeons of Dredmor, casual as it is was supposed to be ported but never was. Rogue Touch isn't universal and is also promised a sequel.

I would love one with sound, tilesets and the depth of a true Roguelike.

Ending is kind of a minimalist puzzle roguelike. Sword and Glory has some roguelike elements like permadeath. Rocketcat is working on Wayward Saga, which they describe as "Zelda meets Dark Souls" and will have permadeath and randomly generated levels.

Re: Rymdkapsel

I love the music and the atmosphere of this game. It has a nice tutorial that explains all the rules. It's a simple game, but it can get really tough.

However I have a few issues with the game. First, if you have two rooms of a certain resource (say reactor) you can't choose/prioritize which room to deplete first, AND your minions don't necessarily go to the one that is closest to them. Consequently, at one point I had minions travel all the way across the map to reach a resource, and then al the way back to construct, even though there was another room right next to the construction site. This pretty much lost me the game. There was no way for me (that I know of) to point them to the nearby node.

Another issue, though this is less critical, is the lack of AI/coordination beteeen minions. When you're building something, sometimes two minions can carry over two blocks of a certain resource even though you only need one, and as one of them delivers the resource, the other one stops since its resource is no longer needed, drops whatever it's carrying (thereby costing me an extra block), and goes to collect the next required resource.

I get what they're trying to do here with the less is more approach. No micromanagement, no need to worry about details. But when your AI is inadequate, it can get really frustrating.

See I think that might be my best bet, just means waiting months till it's out.

There were loads of them coming out in the early days of iOS as well.

Still don't understand how action games or SHMUPS, etc. can work on an iOS device. I love my phone and pad for things like board games, or games with simple controls, like Tiny Wings, or Cut the Rope, but precision platforming/shooting? How?

In the case of shmups, most of the good ones that are ports of games from other platforms actually break the game a little bit in the jump. The Cave ports, for example, allow you to move literally as fast as you can swipe your finger, which is an order of magnitude faster than originally intended (and has the effect of making the smartphone ports far easier than the originals). It works well as long as you keep in mind that it's essentially not the same game anymore.

I feel like after Stone Soup was made, everyone kind of gave up on making a traditional rougue-like. It kind of perfected that style and now everyone's trying to 'boil it down' to the bones or make some kind of hybrid.

Desktop Dungeons did a great take on it (for a flash game) and Dungelot came close to getting it right on mobile. Someone needs to take what Dungelot did and just flesh it out even more and balance it properly.

I would just like someone to put straight up Stone Soup on the App Store. The most perfect roguelike I've played, and very playable with very few buttons.

I got 100% in Tiny Thief-absolutely loved it. The team that made that is insanely talented.
What's the deal with that team? They're the same people that made Angry Birds, right? Seems bizarre that they suddenly decided to branch out into a point-and-click adventure game.

The game is really cool. It takes way too long to become remotely challenging, but finding the secrets in the early levels is still fun. The graphics and animations are great. My girlfriend never plays games and she was hooked after I showed her the cake level.

Yeah, I really love games with minimalist design like this. I've only played over and hour and haven't expanded too far but I haven't had the problem of a minion going way out of its way to get a resource. They always go to the nearest one.

anyone tried Dropchord by Double Fine?

Yep, along with the above it's what I've been playing a lot of. It's really good and tough but I have a problem with games that make you slide your fingers all over and that my fingers, most of the time, have trouble sliding around. Maybe I'm pressing too hard but it makes games like this extra tough. But it has fantastic visuals and music.

Ms Splosion Man dropping to 0.99 tonight

How does the game perform on iPhone 4? And is it worth getting?

I'm sorry, I don't know how it performs on iPhone 4, but the game itself is great on iPad and iPhone 5. It controls very well, and the new coin rebalance in this update should make the entire game playable for nothing more than the initial cost of entry.

Plus, iCloud support is always welcome.

Yes (no depth)
Nope
Yes (didn't like the art style or side view)
Yes (not shabby but not great)
Yes (imho a puzzle game)

I mean the type of Roguelike where you can come up with creative solutions to problems, where it's balls hard at times. Scrolls and potions are unidentified till you drink them, you can do weird stuff. Essentially Brogue but with sound, a GUI and controls.

Have you tried Dungeonism? Also, it's not completely rogulike but Zaga-33 is pretty good. It's a roguelike/puzzle hybrid.

Rovio published the game, but the developers and creators are 5 Ants

Oh, cool. I thought Rovio Stars was the developer, especially with the Angry Bird puzzle in one level and the carried over star system.

Rovio Stars is the name of Rovio's new independent developer games. They choose indie developers and help them publish and promote the game. Icebreaker and Tiny Thief are the first two releases under this umbrella.

ROVIO STARS WILL BRING OUT THE BEST OF MOBILE GAMING

Rovio Entertainment to publish fun new mobile game titles under its Rovio Stars brand

May 14th, 2013 -- Espoo, Finland -- Rovio Entertainment announced the launch of its new mobile game publishing initiative, Rovio Stars, which will feature the best new games from talented and innovative developers. This is the entertainment company’s first foray into including third party titles in its game line-up.

“Rovio Entertainment has positioned itself as one of the powerhouses of mobile entertainment, so moving into publishing is a logical step for us at this point”, said Rovio’s EVP of Games Jami Laes. “We want to help our fans find quality entertainment among the more than 100,000 games available in app stores. That’s where Rovio Stars comes in.”

“In the course of our work, we run into so many fantastic upcoming titles -- games with memorable characters and entertaining gameplay that are also just really fun to play!” said Kalle Kaivola, Director of Development. “These are the sorts of titles we’re interested in. We want to help the developers to give these games that last coat of polish, publish the games and find their audience. We’re focusing on a small, select number of games, and each Rovio Stars launch will be an event of its own.”

The first game to be published under the Rovio Stars program will be Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage by Nitrome Ltd., followed by Tiny Thief by 5 Ants. Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage follows the adventure of a lone Viking, combining a unique ice slicing mechanic with an offbeat humour. Tiny Thief is a beautiful medieval adventure featuring stealth-based puzzles.
“Being involved with Rovio Stars means that we have one of the best marketing teams behind us, as well as visibility to their vast audience. To a small indie studio like Nitrome this is all the backing we could hope for!” said Mat Annal, Managing Director of Nitrome Ltd.

Men's Room Mayhem is free at the moment.

I dunno, its ok but it certainly isn't Flight Control. Also it's a little weird playing it knowing you are guiding men to the urinals and watching them pee lol. I certainly wouldn't want to explain what I was playing to any one.

Can anyone recommend some good board games for Ipad with an active multiplayer community?

Please keep in mind that my experience with board games has been playing life and risk so something simpler to start it up would be better to ease me into the more complex ones.

rymdkapsel added to the OP.

I'm eyeing Dropchord, Pivvot and Knightmare Tower (those tilt based controls look snappy enough) as potential other additions? Thoughts/impressions?

Also, I think the subtitle to one of these monthly threads should be something like "mobile ≠ social" at some point, it just pains me to see that pretty much everyone thinks so and thus ignores the great things that get released every week ;-;.

It's true! Just by reading the Breath of Fire 6 thread you can see many people automatically equate iOS gaming to Candy Crush Saga clones, it's horrible. ):

People who are interested in iOS gaming will find these threads, or be pointed to them by like-minded people. I don't feel the need to beg for or necessarily want to attract close-minded 'lol social'-ities to come in here. The fact we keep doing monthly mini-threads instead of letting one of these morph into a Gaming Community-based megathread alone helps keep this thing fresh on the main page in interested people's view.

That's just my opinion on the matter though.

The majority of GAF just aren't going to listen to reason when it comes to mobile gaming. I learned that a couple of years ago. Best to just ignore them.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I've purchased Dropchord. It's a nice game, but it's buggy, and the antialiasing solution on the default graphics level on Iphone 5 is atrocious. The game looks much cleaner when you switch to a lower visual mode actually, but then a lot of graphics effects are disabled.

In terms of bugs, I had the audio cut off completely at one point, and the massive performace drop in the middle of the game, where framerate dropped to maybe 10 and everything slowed down. The normal framerate resumed when I minimized the game and resumed it back.
