Plants vs Zombies 2 got an update on the weekend, which I believe ads the fourth world (downloaded it, but haven't looked at it yet)

Edit: Actually, doesn't seem to add much apart from a teaser for future levels.

Just wanted to say thanks for this. Never bothered with it because of TD fatigue, but I grabbed a code and now I'm hooked. Great game.

Yeah, had Kingdom Rush sitting on my iPad for months and finally decided to dive in a few weeks ago. So good.

There's a new Battleheart clone out called "Come on, Zombie". It's pretty good although I prefer the art style of Battleheart better.

Be warned, you won't get very far unless you pay. If you can deal with that, it's pretty fun. Otherwise avoid.

Haha, the worst thing about iOS is that you have to keep a lot of games on your device because you don't want to erase their save data. It's awful, especially when you need to free up space to update 1GB+ apps. iCloud saves should be mandatory.

You can manually back them up to your computer with something like iFunbox. Not the most convenient way it could be done, but it works.

Yeah, I guess that's true. I'm just too lazy to start tethering to manually move saves back and forth.

iOS should have a "Keep save?" prompt when you erase an app, or something like that.

Can anyone comment on how Civilization Revolution plays with the $4 content pack? I played the game last summer before the pack when I didn't have access to my desktop, and found it to be surprisingly fun and true to the general concepts of PC Civ games.

Is the new content balanced with the rest of the game, or was it haphazardly thrown in to try to get a few extra dollars out of people?

Got Kingdom Rush from the IGN promotion, and found one of the most addictive iOS games.
It always looked appealing to me, but it's very polished, very good looking, and tons of fun.

Truer words have never been spoken. If only.

I spent over an hour on a heroic challenge in Kingdom Rush lol...definitely going to buy Frontiers once I'm finished with this, KR always looked too much like flash browser tower defense for me to pull the trigger.

TWEWY is on offer, about half off for both the iPhone and iPad versions.
iPad $10.99
iPhone $9.99

Just a reminder to anyone thinking of buying it: SE locked the iPhone version so you can't play it on the iPad. Awful practice that I hope they don't repeat and a blemish on an otherwise great port.

I remember this, was 'hilarious' as the different versions are identical outside of a bit of code that prevents the iPhone one from booting on an iPad, art assets were the same.

I'm still astonished Square Enix got a free pass on this...first by Apple and second by every media outlet.
I don't mind the price, they could have priced it at 30 for all I care, but the principle sucks.

Got bored last night and did some 'dumpster diving' in the freemium trash bin:

Wits and Wager (Trivia):

2454-1-wits-wagers-trivia-party.jpg

Suprisingly, I quite enjoyed this one. Facebook intergration NOT required (but there), You play against 3 others and guess a trivia question where the answer is numerical. For instance: "How many acres is Alcatraz island ?" You can then bet on whose answer is the closest (you can bet on your own also). You play 6 rounds like that and then the 7th round you can bet all your acquired points on an answer in an attempt to catch up (or play it safe). Kind of like the last round of Jeopardy.

The game stores all your answers and then uses them to play against other people. So, you do not have to be 'on-line' for your friends to play against you.

Kingdom of Pirates (MMO/Strategy)

screen320x320.jpeg

This is a Civony game with a pirate skin. It's not bad for what it is, but you never really escape the feeling that you are completely 'on rails' with your choices on how to build and how to equip your crew. It's just always funneling you in a certain direction which always ends in the idea of buying gems to speed up cool down timers.

War and Fame (Coin Pusher)

coin-pusher-war-and-fame-1-2-s-386x470.jpg

I'm still anticipating the day someone makes a transcendent coin pusher (or slot) game that breaks through and becomes something amazing. Sadly, this game is not the one. It tries, in that it has a world map where you need to engage in 'timed battles' to capture that nation. But after capturing the first 4-5 countries (too easily), acquiring enough coins to take on the next one becomes more of a chore.

Could have been something special with better powerups, better progression rewards and more challenging 'battles'.

So should I get TWEWY on iPad or iPhone?

iPad easily. But be warned, I did not like it at all as a game. Very wordy (inthat Japanese way). Very long (feels full of filler). Awful music (gawd that fuckin music! lol). Kinda dull gameplay after a while.

Others will disagree vehemently and that's cool, it's all about personal taste. But unless you are over 70% really into Japanese stuff you will probably get annoyed with this like I did. It's like - you need to own at least 10 jpop or JPRG OST albums to be in the wheelhouse of liking this. Or if you thought that Pokemon was awesome for the story then this might be up your alley.

its retarded. glad SE is mostly doing games universal these days. heck, blood masque even supports icloud.

probably ipad. from what i played, its a bit hard to play on iphone (and naturally its not iphone 5 optimized).

The new Kingdom Rush Frontiers stages are pretty difficult - especially the last one. Couldn't get 3 stars on Casual.

How are the Game Center scores worked out for Knightmare Tower? Mine don't seem to be updating, is it height or total coins collected per run?

Also, I beat the game in 2:21 but it didn't register for the time score board. Gutted.

You mirror my take on the game.

Anybody want to recommend me the best bullet-hell shooters?

I have:

Danmaku 2 Unlimited
Phoenix HD
R.Type

I want:

Bug Princess 2 Black Label
Espgaluda 2 HD

Problem is, $14 each is steep, and I've head Espgaluda 2 is incredibly short, and neither support iPhone 5 HD. This seems to be an issue with most Cave shooters since a lot of them aren't updated often.

Are there any other good ones I missed?

This game is either loathed or loved really - there are vocal fans of the game (me) and they will tell you the opposite. For me, this is one of the best jRPGs that ever came from Square and definitely the best on NDS. There is nothing else that's better on iOS in this genre. Music and the style is either loved or hated and this is a matter of personal taste. It's not that really jpop-ey bar couple of songs: I know some people who doesn't like jPOP and enjoyed the music a lot, in the context of the game it worked well.

Personally I'm not the biggest fan of M&A, I only watched some better movies like Evangelion or Mind Game, but most of that is something I'm not interested in (its mostly crap im afraid), so it's not necessarily game for Animetards IMO. Story is really good, and no, it's not "pokemon-good" (because pokemon games do not have good story) but it is Japanese wordy (not as much as some other games though) and you have to like the kind of usual jRPG archetypes to really enjoy it - though it still has quite a lot of twists in the story and unusual characters and themes. It has some really cool characters and the locale is superb IMO. Still I dont know of any other iOS game with better story. Also it may feel long since your average iOS game takes an hour or two to complete. The longer iOS exclusives - 6 at most. To finish it it takes about 20 hours but I spent more than 200 hours with it, so yes it's a matter of taste entirely. I f*cking love this game and will be singing praise of this game just like Pitta did back when WHQ was being released :D

I can't vouch for gameplay for the iOS release as my account is empty :( (gah if I only knew I wouldn't buy half the releases I did) Though for the PR I did promoting this game to people SE should give me a code or something haha. (Any SE employee here? C'mon!) I dont know how it translates to one screen since the double screen feature was really important on NDS. If the combat is taken from the bottom screen only then it's still lot of fun and the pins are the cooler cousins of FF7 materia.

I know people who like M&A and despised TWEWY, and I know people who don't and loved the game. It's a love-it-or-hate it title but if you like the vibe coming from the trailers and gameplay videos you are in for a a lot of fun and some really deep mechanics that you won't find in other iOS RPGs.

I know its been out for a while but, Plague Inc. is damn addictive and its cool to name your own virus and send it out into the wild!!

Its just scary how something like what is depicted in the game could happen in real life and wipe out the whole world.....I Am Legend anyone!?

This is a good post and I do totally respect your opinion.

It's funny how you talk about it being one of the best JRPGs, when in my experience it's pretty unlike any of them that I've played. I play mainly 16-bit era JRPGs though, so maybe the genre has come along a lot since then, but I didn't find the combat all that engaging. I think it's very different on DS with the dpad controls, but in the iOS version combat is pretty much a lot of swiping and tapping and doesn't put up much of a challenge until deep in the game (I think I was about 10 hours in at least before it started ramping up), so it was a bit of a damp squib there for me. I like the rock/paper/scissors of a good JRPG battle system, and in comparison this felt a little shallow (but ironically more like a throwaway iOS game).

The thing the annoyed me the most was the story though - very obvious characters (Neko especially annoyed the shit out of me) with their very obvious character arcs, speaking ENDLESSLY, repeating themselves and the themes. Worse than MGS even! :p If the game was mostly combat and exploration then I could have enjoyed it more, but the constant interruptions and tapping through reams of text just bugged the hell out of me.

there was a lot to like about it though, levelling up buttons was addictive and I liked the clothing system as well. Some of the puzzles were kinda neat, and I enjoyed the idea of stacking battles. But as a whole it didn't hang together for me and the story actively dissuaded me for playing much beyond about 15 hours (I gave it a good shake!).

But yeah, opinions and arseholes and all that :p but it's an expensive game, and customers should take both of our views into consideration before buying.

Oh yeah? Care to give us a capsule review of how it is now anyone? It looked interesting but all the negativity steered me clear.

I'm not good at this type of thing but I'll try. You basically manage the 4 bounty hunters as far as shields, guns, and utilities. You also choose the skills in the skill tree. So you do all the management and they basically fight for themselves. While they are fighting and the enemies storm in, you can move them around, make them apply utilities to each other and activate their skills. It's sort of like plants vs zombies, or tower defense-ish in respect to mechanics, only you get to move around and the only thing youre protecting is the lives of your squad. You do a series of levels then every 3rd or 4th level, you get a breather to do some management.

I don't know how it was before the update but as of now, I find it very addicting.

Sounds kind of like Battleheart. Maybe I'll check it out.
