iOS Gaming August 2013: The Curious Case of no Subtitle

Oh yeah, did anyone try out the F2P shooter The Drowning? I heard some good things about this a while back, and it has a unique FPS control system.

https://itunes.apple.com/app/id553255786

http://youtu.be/sAKdyxIB1cE

I bought it today-but I haven't tried it out yet. I'll report in later with my box quote for the OT.

So the weirdest thing happened today. I have already achieved 100% on achievements on Kingdom Rush Frontiers. 2 days ago I installed the iOS7 beta. I went to do the update today for KRF, and for some reason the app was not on my phone. It makes no sense-I would not have manually deleted it, and I can't imagine that simply installing an OS update would selectively remove one app from my phone. I was disheartened that I'd have to re-download the app and start from scratch with a fresh save file-as the original game didn't have iCloud support.

So I redownloaded the App...opened it up, and my save file was there. Makes no sense. Where did the save file come from if iCloud wasn't in the initial application?

I tried The Drowning... well, I don't know what to say because I think this game isn't as bad as other freemium games, but I also haven't played long enough to hit the paywall that might be there.
You start off with a little storyline (which is a first for these kind of games, I think) and then you get to shoot some monsters (which I guess are "the drowning", they come out of water). The control scheme is really weird but it works really well, to shoot you have to tap with two fingers, the bullet gets shot at the space between them. To move you tap with one finger anywhere on the screen and your character moves there, the pathfinding is really good, finally, to look around you swipe to wherever you wanna look. From what I played it seems the game is based around missions, such as "defending" your "base" or just going into a stage and shooting monsters in the face. Each mission requires a little energy, and when you start a mission you're given a certain amount of time. The objective is to score as much as you can since better scores give more and better rewards. During the missions there's a bar on the top of the screen that indicates your performance, and everytime you hit a score milestone (represented by a star) you earn a new reward, the last two milestones always give rare loot. Loot is used to upgrade or acquire new weapons, as well as forming new items, for example, to move to the next stage of the game initially you need to repair a motorcycle, so you gotta play the stages until you get the parts needed to repair it and so forth + the usual IAP shenigans. Graphically the game's gorgeous and they also offer the option of using the usual virtual buttons if the weird control scheme is too odd for you.
I'm not a FPS fan but I actually had a lot of fun in what little I played, might give it another whirl later.

Re: Rymdkapsel

I love the music and the atmosphere of this game. It has a nice tutorial that explains all the rules. It's a simple game, but it can get really tough.

However I have a few issues with the game. First, if you have two rooms of a certain resource (say reactor) you can't choose/prioritize which room to deplete first, AND your minions don't necessarily go to the one that is closest to them. Consequently, at one point I had minions travel all the way across the map to reach a resource, and then al the way back to construct, even though there was another room right next to the construction site. This pretty much lost me the game. There was no way for me (that I know of) to point them to the nearby node.

A fair call. It is also annoying when you'll set some minions to research and the minion on the other side of the map will try to do that rather than the one standing right outside the room.

It seems to be less of an issue if you have lots of projects queued up, so I try to do that. But overall a patch is needed just to polish. Like with a lot of ios games, support will be the key here.

I don't like how for some star items in Tiny Thief, you need to do things in a specific order or else never have a chance at that item (like if you do X, Y, Z, you get the item, but if you do Y, Z, you have no chance of doing X anymore), or if the chance to get an item only happens once per game--otherwise, I love it.

This has probably been asked a million times before, but here it goes...

I just bought Tiny Wings, Mega Mall Story and World of Goo for my iPad (2), I'm looking for a few more games to full my iPad with. I am looking for some more recommendations, I also really, really enjoyed Plants vs. Zombies and Scribblenauts (though it was way too short). a while ago. Do you guys have some more recommendations for similar games that I might like? Preferably free or just $1-2. Also, recommendation for a tower defense game?

Cheers!

(I've read the best of Neogaf iOS threads but honestly I didn't see too much interesting stuff in the top 20).

TD? Sentinel series, Fieldrunners 2
If you like platformers, I'd recommend Penumbear

For other games recommendations, I give you the IOS Hidden Gems thread:

I've always seen the Kingdom Rush games recommended for tower defense games.

I'm really trying to wait for Sine Mora to drop in price but I don't know how long I'll have to wait for that to happen. It's only (relative to life, not iOS) $6, but still.

That thread was weak. Wasn't #1 game dev story or something?

For better suggestions, go back to every month's OT and read the first page. You can find links to them in the first page of this thread.

This one seemed to have snuck out last night: A Gravity Falls themed tower defense game.

Have no idea how it plays, but thought I'd mention it since my kids and I adore the show.

Ok, seriously, fuck these shell guys. "Oh, am I almost dead? Hang on, I will retreat into my shell and become invulnerable, heal all my HP, and slowly crawl forward despite any troops you have blocking me. Also I can disable any towers that might actually be able to shoot me even when I'm out of my shell. Have fun!"

Boooooooooo.

and they nerfed the shit out of the mech towers.

Rymdkapsel needs more missions/maps. I finished the current missions on the third try. Each try lasted over an hour, mind you, so it's not that bad, and it is an awesome game. Still though, I see no reason to go back to it atm.

I lasted until wave 32 (75 mins) if anyone is curious.

Finally got Mage Gauntlet. What a great game. SNES games were before my time but I can appreciate a well made action RPG. Tight controls, great art style, combat with a slight strategic edge, nice magic effects, tons of enemies, an ever harder New Game +...very happy with my purchase

Any Pivvot impressions?

You should consider biting the bullet and paying the 6 bucks. It's worth so much more than that and you'd be supporting devs who have done a good job listening to the community regarding updates and have made a fantastic game

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Not sure why people would want a "real" MH on a touch only device - it wont work.

It's a social card game (mobage or w/e), so no, I wouldn't get exited. Probably won't even be localised. That MGS card game vanished as well I think.

Is it normal for Tiny Thief to get choppy, particularly during the little intro and outro animations? I'm on an iPhone 5, which makes it weird.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

Yup, this happens to me. The game can drop in framerate for a second or two during some particular moments.

I'm on a roll and creating a massive backlog, just bought Breach & Clear, Sid Meier's Pirates!, Tiny Thief and Tiny Wings.

Now I just want a good management/sim game, as deep as possible on a mobile phone.
Game Dev Story was already mentioned, any other stuff?

Woah I didnt have an access to the internet for a while, topic is exciting as ever ;)

I got Tiny Thief and partly because of my back log and partly because it looked like another Rovio game (Angry birds-like menus, Flash-graphics) I just played 2 levels and deleted it but I am going to check it out properly later.

Rymdkapsel though is great and while I hoped for something that is more campaign based, it's kind of everything I wished star command would be, really. It's addictive (I played the game and lost by the 16th wave at one go) and it looks great - though it does feel like it's lacking something more substantial - there is tetris-like room mechanic, tower defense element, a bit of management sim which all gels beautifully together, but I wish it was fleshed out more - you just grow your base, defend it and that's it. No smaller goals, no little things to shake things up a bit. Asking price is a bit too steep by comparison all things considered.

Any impressions on Gravity Falls yet?

I played for about ten minutes and it seems challenging. You have to defend the Mystery Shack and don't have a lot of options to choose from, and the ones you do have to choose from, only one seemed worth using. But I think it's meant to be replayed numerous times to accumulate money for new options to defend with. There's also multiple locations to defend.

I pick the games, or have a "wishlist" of games I'd love to nab, then it's about lining up what is doable.

It's more complicated than it looks. We don't like to give away games that have been free before. We like to give away games that are good AND tied to big brands... we prefer Universal games, etc.

Not as many games fit all that criteria as you would think. KR isn't Universal, for example.

Nice one, though I already have both 1 and Frontiers. I already facebooked all my friends about it, such a good game. Wish I knew about the whole thing when the Horn was for free.

I have just enough money to buy myself Drop Chord - but is it worth it or maybe I should wait and buy something else? What are the other planned releases? This one looks very promising though, any thoughts on it?

Disappointed that Rymdkapsel doesn't allow you to play podcasts in the background. Especially since it's a rather slow, meditative game.

Found this on Toucharcade, looks great

It doesn't surprise anyone probably, but Infinity Blade 3 is a reality according to some rumors and some LinkedIn posts.
Possibly late 2013.
Possibly earlier, maybe on stage a iPhone 5S/iPad 5 announcement?

Wow.
Never been a fan of Crescent Moon games but Mines of Mars looks great.
They had my total attention when they mentioned it's also a story based adventure (I need some motivation in these kind of games).
