Japanese newspaper rumor: redesigned Vita unveiling just before TGS

I don't get the extra ram part. Right now you can run Music Unlimited, Skype, Twitter or the web browser without closing out a game. What other apps do they even want to run at the same time that they can't currently?

And wouldn't the idea be to make it cheaper?
The web browser load times can be improved (try cnet or theverge on it) while running a graphically intensive game, the YT app may be improved too as the video can stay suspended and be resumed at any time without a 'network connection suspended' error.

That's quite the difference. If the rumor is correct, it's likely a "tablet" version of the Vita and not a replacement of the current one.

That's ridiculous.

Yeah, if anything this is Sony trying to make a new tablet more than replacing the Vita. That is way too large for a portable device.

The Xperia Z 5" was already big, but the Xperia Z Ultra 6.44" is a BEAST.

So they want to repeat the mistake they made with the first Vita? By making another stupid expensive model?

I thought Sony had learned....

I think I ll get this new model and simply give my old VITA to the wife.

"In addition, the design of the new model will be more in-line with the PS4 design"

Sony add R2 and L2 please ? :p

Oh! That may be a reason why developers don't have to do anything for remote play!
not really

Like physical ones? If they made it clunky, I'd rather not. The touchpad is theoretically a great innovation, and I want developers to try find ways to use it rather than have the safer choice of more physical buttons. :p

I laughed at the RAM part. It's like the Sony execs came on NeoGAF, said "Look, these guys keep babbling only about RAM when it comes to PS4 specs. If we increase the Vita's RAM, they'll easily fall for it."

I'd buy one if ergonomics are good and the DPI isn't too bad, by the way.

Or it will be the same price as the Vita is now and the original Vita will get a significant price drop.

This is a good idea. The original Vita can be marketed as an affordable model for kids, with the Pets game incoming etc. It'll better fit their hands aswell. The luxury model is for enthusiasts and PS4 owners.

So that you can use it while still streaming from you PS4?

exactly! :)

What kid would want a PS Vita over an iPad or respective tablets these days?

The thing is while I think this is nonsense, i wouldnt be against a vita tablet. Id just worry about PPI with such a jump in screen size. Likewise what would happen with psp functionality?

I think the back touchpad is clunky as hell, especially for physical buttons emulation... It can be interesting when the game is designed for it, like in tearaway or LBP

As kids get to a certain age the appeal of the cheap free games their parents download for their iPhones and iPads goes away... very quickly, especially when they visit a friend with a console.

I had a feeling. Must be why all these sales or price drops were happening no?

Those new 6.3" screens, if utilized properly wouldn't increase form factor much.

If price is decent and some new games are announced, I'd buy it.

I don't bring my tablet with me anywhere. It's a couch device.

You don't equal the world.

Some people do, some don't. Generally speaking a tablet is thought of as a portable device. As are laptops. Both of those are bigger than this proposed vita.... which i'm not sure I believe exists.

Jinfash

needs 2 extra inches
If it doesn't have any other enhancements such as...
- Video output
- Larger buttons
- Larger, better placed, and tighter analogs
- Superior integration with the PS4
- Less finicky, glass coated screens
- Usable internal flash
To offset the lower ppi, then not sure if want. The Vita is currently as close to perfect from a hardware perspective as any company can get with their first iteration of a system.

Sounds like they are going for the Wii U Gamepad route and going to try and be serious about the controller aspect. similar sized screen etc
Agreed. Sony wants to capitalize on that success.

Could someone please tell me if this is true, how are they making hardware changes in terms of RAM, what happens to the older PS Vita's(I bought one a few months after launch)

I am all right with the cosmetic changes in terms of screen size, but this RAM thing if true is really bothering me.

I want TV out but I do not think they would do unfortunately because many games have VITA/PS3 versions and it takes away the incentive to buy both.

First they need to make all games NATIVE and MANDATORY before resizing anything. But really, they should just make a real tablet 7 or 10 inch with the ability to play Vita games and synced to a dualshock 4 controller.

So disappointed in 3ds, wii u, xbox one, I have more than enough money I saved up for them to buy another Vita and PS4

Sony please make a pdf/doc/text reader app!

Not seeing this news on any Japanese news blogs yet. What is this magic box site?
Oh, that's right, Magic Box HAS been unreliable and says weird stuff at times, I believe they once claimed Lenneth was in Dissidia... because they apparently thought the Warrior of Light looked like her. Best to wait and see if a more reliable source brings something out that isn't sourcing Magic Box.
Sony add R2 and L2 please ? :p
This actually may not be as odd or impractical a request as it'd seem at first glance. But it'd require creating a cheap accessory you can attach to the back touch pad and press in siilar to normal buttons, and thus grant that functionality. Some games do treat the back touchpad as such already afterall.

If you read the text in the op you'd find out that the RAM boost isn't for games, but multimedia applications. Sony bumped up the RAM in the PSP 2000 revision from 32MB to 64MB, it just meant that OG PSPs were unable to use Skype.

ElTorro

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
So that would explain the "New unnamed Sony console" thing that started the PS4 release date rumor for october?

Meh.

Hcoregamer00

The 'H' stands for hentai.
Unless they're using LCD screens instead of OLED, that would cut some costs.

That's what I am thinking, if they want to make it "cheaper" they go with IPS LED Backlit LCD screens. Not sure how much it would save, but it is probably cheaper than the current OLED screen.

If they can keep the PPI nice like Nintendo did with the 3DS models, I can totally see myself upgrading (as long as the OLED stays). It's just a little bigger than the Wii U screen which I think is a wonderful size, so this may definitely be in the cards for me when I pick up a PS4 regardless (If true).

Fair, but at what age do you think that happens? Wouldn't they just upgrade to the 3DS? So they can play Pokemon with all their friends?

A redesign based around PS4 makes this sound very legit to me. Just makes sense.

Hope they put some stuff in there for improved remote play.

At that screen-size, there's possibility of making the Vita thinner though, and depends on how it's designed, have the potential to be sold as a tablet device on top of a gaming device. ( not sure how to solve the thumb-sticks though )

As it is, Vita is too 'pure' a gaming device. It's can't become a phone without major, major compromises, and it's too 'small & thick' to be a tablet-alternative.

Any redesign of Vita going forward should work concurrently with the Sony Mobile division though. It would be best for both sides if they could share many similar components, and get cost-savings from there.

trying to make vita more into a tablet like device? would change the selling points of the vita.
Sounds more like "XL" version. I'm not gonna pretend I understand the appeal - but market has consistently shown they sell better for Nintendo (even at higher prices).
