Battlefield 4 at PAX Prime a.k.a. WTF DICE

All devs for PS4 and Xbox One have to be in the most hardcore crunch time ever for launch.
I bet there will be a lot of patches after the launch of both systems.

Not the problem here. Apparently they are running the E3 build at PAX, not the noticeably more complete and solid Gamescom build. What's troubling is that DICE/EA had said BF4 would be in a beta build at PAX. Guess that's not happening?

I understand that, but what I've seen of new consoles aren't enough to justify buying multiplats on consoles.

I had the same feeling since the specs leaked out last year such a disappointing leak that was. Well hope ms and sony kill them fast hopefully they last short so next next in 2018 :p

Hell i wouldn't even be mad if microsoft just sells the game os part and let third party manufacturers or consumers self supply the hardware. Kinda like the steambox idea.

Feels bad for people with shitty internet popping in BF4 at launch anticipating to play online.
"Sorry sir you have to download this 2.5GB patch first" on an 1mb/s bandwidth connection.

Significantly.

I'd say DS4 = X360

DS3 = XB1

In terms of comfort.

This is exactly what worried me when they started fuckin' with something that wasn't broken to begin with. All they had to do was take the 360 controller, fix the D-pad (it's only real flaw), and be done with it.

Instead they over-engineered the damn thing right into the ground. Here's to hoping a 3rd party will release 360-esque controllers for the XB1.

As for BF4, I fully expect it to be running properly by the time it hits consoles. Just expect some of the whiz-bang effects to be toned down significantly on consoles.

As someone who has held all the controllers at E3, I just wanna chime in here saying I have no idea how someone can think the X1 controller is so drastically different than the 360 one. I thought it was great, and I thought the DS4 controller was nice too, though I think people that absolutely love their DS3s might be a little bit put off by it at first.

This is what i've been concerned about. I'm a big fan of the DS3, but even before the redesign I was okay with them changing a few things to address some of the complaints (like the triggers, dead zone on the sticks etc). It still looks like the same basic shape with the major differences being that the inputs for the controller are all much better and they've made the controller itself slightly larger. So, hopefully it'll be easy to adjust to.

I have been worried about the new triggers and how they'd feel ever since the controller was shown. Looks like they're going to feel soft/squishy like I was fearing. They need to keep the XB1 controller's improvements and go back to the 360's triggers.

I'm also worried about how loose they made the sticks.

Not really but the design makes it uncomfortable to hold and pull triggers on. Here is a graphical representation explaining why you will accidentally pull triggers all the time on xbox one.

So battlefield still crashes? Damn, I know its beta but I dunno. Ever since I got Battlefield 3 it constantly crashes after a brief period saying the drivers crashed, most likely what happened here not touching battlefield 4 until it drops to 20$

Just to play devils advocate a little here..

So you're a big studio, but you answer to EA.
You have a worldwide launch of a sequel to a huge IP, just 2 years after launching the previous iteration Battlefield 3. In contrast, you had almost 6 years of development time between Battlefield 2 and 3 (not entirely accurate as DICE put out a bunch of BF spinoffs during that time, but you get my meaning)

Anyways, it's crunch time. You gotta ship this thing on PS4, XB1, in addition to the flagship, PC. You have precious little time, as the deadline approaches.

How many times do you want to peel resources off development, to prepare/test/compile dog and pony demos for tradeshows, when you're in crunch time?

How many tradeshows has Battlefield4 been to, since spring? Is this because DICE wants to be devoting all this time and resources to them.. or because EA and other partners are obliging them to?

My guess? DICE were told to make the game appear at PAX, maybe an obligation to EA or Microsoft even (given Hyrbs promo bit) ... they couldn't justify the lost time and effort building still another demo, so you got 8x8 map variation running on PC specced to be similar to XB1.

I'm not sure I can really get *angry* with DICE for this. But if console was my primary platform, I sure would be disappointed. Maybe they are still at a performance point where they think showing 64 players on console would still be damaging ... but this 8v8 stuff is just as damning imo.

I think in the end, the console versions will come out great. I truly believe they just don't have the time to be shitting out custom console builds every tradeshow, as they are so focused on just trying to get this thing done in time for launch. That's just my honest opinion. As others have surmised, we probably won't really see the latest and console builds til launch.

Is COD:Ghost playable at PAX? Bad idea to show an outdated build when your major competitor is probably showing something much more stable.

Wait a minute: BF4 will be 720p on ps4 too? I'm expected something like 960p at least, there is not a single chance I will buy a game at 720p in an 'next generation' console, I refuse to spend my money on it.

Perhaps EA's seemingly official policy to promote Xbox One at some of these conventions is now causing problems. Perhaps they could show the game running on PS4 Dev kits but someone wants it shown at PAX with an Xbox One controller.

DICE mentioned that the resolution is not finalized, but it will be higher than 720p.

We don't know for sure, but Dice has said that they are not targeting 1080p.

Its highly unlikely that ONE person will prefer the newer Xbox controller over the old one?

Holy crap.

And wow at people defending this nonsense. I don't see the problem with pointing out when people are using hyberbole on this board. I'm sure if somebody was saying something as laughably negative about the PS4, I'd be jumped on immediately.

Its one thing to post your impression and say YOU prefer the old one. To try and state the new one is objectively worse kind of ruins my ability to take the 'impression' seriously.

Staph please for the love of fucking god stop, Stop vomiting this shit. We have great mods who will take care of trolling if it is one.

Your bickering is derailing a freaking impression thread about opinions. Please STOP.

This post nails, there have been rumours off poor X1 drivers making it harder to develop on. All these companies trying to build a game for new systems. Might be similar architecture but its still a new system with its own challenges. They are not going to stop this close to the finish line to do yet another demo when they have, what, 4? 2 SP, 2 MP demos.

What gets me about this angle though is that this is the old E3 demo, and apparently there's an updated Gamescom demo with more content and refinement that, for some reason, wasn't used here. I've no idea personally of course, but that much just seems really odd.

Take a deep breath and relax, bud.

The "L1" and "R1" buttons on the Xbox One controller are really awkward to use. Are you talking about them? Pardon my ignorance, don't remember what the buttons are called on the Xbox controller? Maybe it was LB and RB? :)

Perhaps sir Albert Penello can clear this issue. I am sure that the game was being played on a xbone devkit, right?

How the hell will this game be ready for launch?

Dice, please, delay the PS4/X1 versions. This situation is embarrassing.

Um, better limit that comment to the X1 version. By all accounts the PS4 version is looking good, and is currently being optimized to between 720p and 1080p.

W-w-what? Pre-release games running on dev kits is unacceptable in this day and age, so running pre-release games on an actual PC instead? Surely that's something akin to a war crime?!?

I really wish DICE would just show us some console footage already. Get on Fallon already and at least show us some single player footage at the very least. They must have something optimized.

Considering how god awful bf3 campaign ran on consoles, and would warn you to get back on the map anytime you went 5 feet off the linear path? Probably not.

I'm dying to know how the current-gen versions turn out. Hopefully they aren't hidden untill release.

The bad thing about the UK PS4 launch - we get 2 weeks to hear the Americans tell us how fantastic it is.

The good thing about the UK PS4 launch - we get to hear their impressions on BF4 before spending our money. It's gone from a Must Buy to more apprehensive Wait & See.
