The jaggies are there, but I think some of the IQ impressions from some were predictably exaggerated. But still, hope they smoothen out before launch either way.

In any case, from this video by TeamVVV, the best takeaway for me was the handling dynamics. Just looks incredibly fun. Can't believe how quickly he adjusted, and how well the vehicle seemed to respond to fine tuning drifts and traction.

Pretty excited.

The Inside Track
Thanks Rushy & Blimblim. Looking forward to downloading that higher quality footage from Gamersyde. Why the hell don't we have more sites uploading higher bitrate footage is beyond me.

It's all a matter of costs really. Gamersyde, even with the Neogaf links, is still a very small site, and with the very lost costs of bandwidth here in France I can afford the traffic spikes without too much problems. But if we were the size of IGN or GT or insert big huge site here, the bandwidth costs would be completely prohibitive.

We really appreciate it, Blim.

I've been hearing how "rough" this game was looking but after clicking on the links from the previous page I was pleasantly surprised. Granted, I'm no graphic whore, but I think driveclub's shortcomings have been greatly exaggerated. I look forward to trying the PS+ version.

Having been playing GT5 a lot recently, I think people are put off by how much is going on in Driveclub.

A lot of tracks are very plain in GT, especially the real racing venues.

Well considering how much money we lost this year, I wouldn't say we survive as is. The overhead of running the site as a company here in France is too much (it basically doubles our costs just to pay taxes/accounting), so we'll most likely have to change to a non-profit status by the end of the year (not that we ever made any profit, mind you).
But yeah, video quality is basically the only reason people outside of our small community come to the site, and it's something that will make a lot of sense financially.

thats not as bad as you make it seem. racing venues usually are known for the track itself, not for the beautiful surroundings or the flying balloons in the sky. many of the tracks started their "career" as a plain piece of land, that tarmac and infrastructures were built upon it. natural beauty is usually never a prerequisite when choosing where to build your track :)

I also see this complaint in forza threads, but it really is a non-complaint.

Just FYI, I asked Rushy if we could get a download version not compressed to shit by YouTube, he simply replied "working on it".

Downloaded the 1080p gamersyde vid... jebus rice that looks terrible. Surely the sharpness of the panels must have been set too high. Looks like 720p, or lower, upscaled to 1080p without any AA

Blim already confirmed it will be up at Gamersyde today.

What video did you download? These 4 direct feed 1080p videos are not up yet. Only on youtube.

I just noticed something during one of those videos:

OH MY GOD THE TREE IS CLIPPING IN THE CAR. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE FINAL GAME WILL BE LIKE THIS BECAUSE ALL THESE VIDEOS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHAT THE FINAL PRODUCT WILL LOOK LIKE. FUCK.

I understand that i've not yet seen direct feed footage but i didnt expect the offscreen footage to look that poor aliasing wise

Pre Alpha Build. Don't panic...

I don't buy it, they aren't going exclusively digital for PS+ so discs are going to have to be pressed at some point, they can't keep parading around a pre-alpha build and expect people not to be worried. They should be getting near completion at this point....

There is still plenty of pop up in the video.

Also this part of the track is horrible with those ugly little white bushes that look totally out of place and copied and pasted...

I welcome the day when it is illegal for developers to have any music playing in a driving game while the car is being driven, if only so THEY DON'T FUCKING DO IT EVERY SINGLE TIME A GAMEPLAY VIDEO IS RELEASED.

I know, let us hear the engines ffs.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Why no new thread for the new videos?

This was to be expected, but I don't think we've had proper confirmation of manual gears until now.

If you come from a background of playing arcade-racing games, like I do, then you’ll have a lot of fun with DRIVECLUB. The first thing I learned is that you definitely need to use the brakes, which I wasn’t used to, but it’s really easy to get to grips with. It’s incredibly satisfying to get a feel for some of the world’s most exciting cars and there’s a lot of depth and individuality to driving each of the cars.

If your pedigree is simulation-racing games – or you’ve ever driven these cars for real, like our Design Director Paul [Rushy] Rustchynsky – then you’ll also be happy with how DRIVECLUB feels. He tells me you’ll instantly get to grips with each vehicle’s unique handling characteristics and you’ll be able to apply advanced driving techniques like ‘trail braking’ and ‘feathering the throttle’.

You can also choose to drive with manual gear transmission and we’re working on support for steering wheels to enhance your driving immersion too.

Same. I find it hard to believe that many people still listen to music when playing driving games, unless they're *super* arcadey.

On that note, what I heard of the engine/environment noise in chase mode was great. Felt a little more like it was a camera chasing a car with bits of road and environment noise and less like it was just the sound of a car without any of the sounds you'd expect.

Gran Turismo could do with more music.

Depends on the game for me. I left it on in Horizon because it was more arcadey and there was some decent music. Turned it off in FM4 so I could concentrate, and because I hated the music.

You'd think not. Seriously.
I'm not 100% on this (Rushy could confirm/deny), but DriveClub seems to be running on a deferred renderer (or uses some form of deferred shading) and that means dealing with aliasing is a lot trickier than on a forward renderer, especially with dynamic timescale and lighting. MSAA is very expensive and not as effective as it with a forward renderer, SSAA is expensive and FXAA blurs the image and still won't be enough. We could still see some improvements, but I'm expecting FM5 to have better IQ due to it's static lighting and fixed conditions.

Anti-aliasing

Anti-aliasing is any technology that is designed to minimize aliasing and temporal aliasing artifcats.

Anti-aliasing is relevant in a 3D graphics rendering pipeline because part of the pipeline handles graphics as geometry of essentially infinite resolution. In a late stage in the pipeline, known as ROP, Raster Operations, the color of each pixel on the screen is determined based on the geometry. It is in or after this stage that any anti-aliasing is performed.

Whelp, that just tells me someone made some bad programming choices, because nothing about this game's visuals leave me really impressed, and it's got aliasing issues, and it's not even running at a solid 30fps according to those who've played it. The words "shit" and "show" come to mind, and no I'm not hating on the game. I'm just being honest about it's current state, and unfortunately there is very little programming time left for launch titles like this.

Any game that is coming out on November 15th is going to be going into certification in about a month. That means the improvements stop there. It's just testing and bug fixing.

november 15th, possible day one patch? They may not need to be gold until end of October. Plenty of time yet

Sorry for being late but thanks for the links
I'm starting to think this is going to be somewhat similar to Motorstom at the launch of Ps3: a game impressive in itself, but a little barebones and lacking that extra polish that made lot of reviewer severly underscoring it (in my opinion, obviously)

We have no info on when this code we have footage of was from though - only that Evolution consider it 35% complete and alpha. It would have needed to be split off the main branch for demo creation purposes a good while ago. So what we see could be code from 3 months or more ago. That gives a lot more time for things to progress.

1) bad programming? EmptySpace doubts bruiserbear even knows how hard it is to pull off dynamic lighting.

2) "alpha code" =/= "current state". the words "reading" and "comprehension" come to mind.

Just got the download links for the files. They are quite big, to say the least, so it will take some time, and then I'll reencode them to bigh bitrate mp4, so expect something in 2 to 3 hours, maybe a bit less.

DRIVECLUB: New 1080p Videos

Sorry for double post.

Great news! I assume by "manual transmission" they mean clutch support? The new Mad Catz wheel doesn't even have a clutch (not that I'll be purchasing a new one).

I REALLY hope they get the Fanatecs working. Besides GTA V, this is my most hyped game coming until 2014.

While some of the videos are rough, I think the core is there. The lighting, the sense of speed, everything looks great and I'm sure will be improved on.

The one issue I have is how much "stuff" is going on, on the screen all the time. I really hope there are options to turn that off and just drive. 60" HDTV with a wheel setup and very minimalist UI = Racing Heaven.
