Indie Games [September] Now Voting - Post 878!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
My 2 cents $10 on Isomer:
news_roadtoalpha.jpg

Lets just say my first impressions of Isomer were not that positive and my opinion of the game would heavily depend on the direction the devs plan taking this.

As it stands, they advertise it as mix of Xcom and Dwarf Fortress style gameplay, which is sort of true and a cool selling point, but also their biggest problem I see atm. The game basically requires you to walk around with your dudes and explore the world. There isnt too much to explore yet other than some minerals to gather and enemy fortresses to plunder but thats easily explained with the Alpha state, which is fine. Thats just content updates that trickle in eventually. Anyway, the big problem here, is that you always control your dudes Xcom style by giving them individual orders. Not only is rather slow, but it also currently doesnt allow for any sort of tactics as there are no orders or different attacks/movements you can give to your minions. However, that is something that could technically be alleviated via a big combat update too, so I dont want to be too harsh on that either even though that will take a lot of work to get implemented, so not sure how good they can pull that off.

However, and here is the big, big minus in the equation, you currently control your units Xcom style ALL the time, even when... mining and building stuff, which means for every block you want to be built, you either stick to a single dude (which takes much longer and leaves your other dudes standing around mindlessly) or you pause, issue orders to multiple units individually, which all build a single block, and then all need new orders for the next block as you cannot chain any commands. Think Minecraft, just with 10 units instead of 1 that you all control yourself. For comparison, in Dwarf Fortress, you simply give an order and a Dwarf who can do it, will. This is 1000x less cumbersome as it doesnt require you to go through all units to check who does what to see who might be able to place the next block.

Whats clearly missing from this game is some form of AI and build chains. Or even simple self-programmable AI like waypoints that would at least not leave your units stand around mindlessly while you order around a single dude manually. There is some clear potential here, but I dont think the current version of the game shows that the devs have an idea how to overcome the limitation of the genre mix they tried to achieve here. I do realize though, that most of these features (especially Unit AI and the Combat features) are quite work intensive, but if they dont plan on including them in some form or the other, I dont see how I could recommend this game just based on its potential to anyone.

I know its an alpha, but some issues are rather work intensive as they require the implementation of completely new features. Currently, the game is definitely not worth its money ($10), and as long as I dont know whether they actually plan on addressing these issues (even if its 1-2 years down the road), I unfortunately don't have faith in this game becoming worth its pricetag at any point in the future. In any case, this game needs years of work before its worth playing so no hurry.

Shadows and anti-aliasing are turned off, for now.

And if you have doubts on pronunciation, type it in Google Translate. The English (and Italian) robot-voice is accurate.

Ha, I actually guessed right but I did have my doubts.

What does it mean?

It's an area of Hell, in Dante Alighieri's Inferno.

I'll be frank, there is not such a deep connection to the actual game's story or gameplay. I mostly thought it sounds cool.

Thanks for the write-up Toma. I really appreciate the effort, especially since this game seemed great to me going by the screenshots and info. It is a bummer how many games look promising based on the screens and descriptions but fall flat in gameplay.

As some may have seen earlier. I am not a developer, but a reviewer on youtube. And just like some historical figure said in his life "I have a dream!", and that is to give indie games and developers more atenttion that they deserve for all the hard work that they are doing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcEJNbveyFY

About a month ago we had the idea to set up a website dedicated to indie games and indie developers. Where we promote new and upcoming indie games who are currently seeking help in there campaign or crowdfunding and where the gamer can come and find new games to experience aswell as a growing community and fun features to play with like ScreenShotSaturday votes and contests.

For this we created the IndieGoGo project and we are happy to inform that it launched this week! Now we will not ask you to just go and back us, but what we do wish to ask you is if you could share this with your fanbase on twitter, facebook or any other platform you are on. In the end the website will be catered to all of us, so the more people that get to know about the project and the website, the bigger and better the indie community will become.

If you wish to view or share the project, you can do so on the campaign or by using the following link.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/indiespotted-because-developers-deserve-it/x/4286026

Or the short url
http://igg.me/at/IndieSpotted/x/4286026

Again sorry for just posting this here, but seeing that we are all gamers and developers by passion I thought I could share this with you guys, and perhaps in the future I will also see your names popping up over at our website :)

The first half of Full Bore will be released in three days. It looks good to me, but I hope the game would be a bit less pixelated.

“Full Bore is the journey of a young boar through the long-buried past. As you figure out how the blocks around you behave, you’ll be able to reach new areas of the world and uncover their mysteries- and their riches. Use your ever-growing knowledge to dig your way though mines, temples, scrapyards, lava tubes, inexplicable lakes and mysterious laboratories, as you piece together the story of a world transfigured.”

“With over a hundred areas- a third of them hidden- no set path, and secrets everywhere, Full Bore is not just a world to get lost in, but one you can keep coming back to find something new.”

I need to get up on some demos for impressions...

Couple of games on IGN's 12 Pax Indie Games (Nicole Tanner) that haven't been mentioned here:

Foul Play
Trailer
Nicole Tanner said:
foulplay_1.jpg

A 2D side-scrolling brawler set on a Victorian stage, complete with an audience, Foul Play lets two people play cooperatively as Baron Dashforth and his assistant Scampwick as they act out the “completely accurate” story of the Baron’s life. The developers actually got inspiration for the game from the music video for Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight.”

Simply beating your way through all of the enemies makes for a pretty boring play, so you need to perform dazzling combat displays that please the audience. In some cases the audience will make requests for specific combat actions for you to fulfill.

Always Sometimes Monsters
Trailer

Always Sometimes Monsters is an RPG focused completely on choice rather than combat. Set in the real world, the story tasks the player with traveling across the country to stop the love of his or her life from marrying someone else. Along the way, you’ll have countless decisions to make, all of which affect the world in some way.

Unlike popular RPGs with choice, the choices in this game aren’t classified into being a good person or a bad person. In fact, they’re not classified at all. You make a choice and the world adapts. Every choice has the potential for negative consequences for a character, and the developers said it would be impossible to go through the entire game without being mean to someone, just like in real life. Players create their character up front to be pretty much anything. Either gender, any race, and any sexual orientation are available, but even that choice will affect the world.

When I played, I went for all out violence, choosing to shoot the first person I met. Unfortunately, he turned out to be the narrator, so my demo ended, but that gives you an idea of how open-ended the choices are and their possible consequences.

Hey Toma, thank you for Dredmor! My impressions:

Art style is pretty nice, cartoonish but with cool little details and magic effects. I'm enjoying the gameplay, feels more chess-like than what I was expecting. When I think turn based, I usually think XCOM style or Final Fantasy, but this is more like Frozen Synapse in that enemies move when you move. There's a huge amount of tactics, skills, weapons, and factors to consider. Also really like the sense of humor in the item descriptions.

I can see myself putting a lot of time into this. I still prefer action roguelikes but Dungeons of Dredmor is a lot of fun with tons of depth. My current character is kind of a jack of all trades: some necromancy, some tinkering, some battle geology, dual wielding, artful dodging. Next playthrough, I'll probably focus more on magic and spell casting

Foul Play was pretty good. Only game I played at PAX besides games that people I knew had (Samurai Gunn, Sportsfriends, Galak-Z though that was played off site).

The animation is kinda wack (swinging arms that stay in one piece look awful to me as an animator myself) and the graphics are a little monotone, but the fighting was pretty cool, and the objectives during fights were a cool idea, although I couldn't tell what I was supposed to do sometimes to get an optional goal.

Thanks!

We've pulled inspiration from everywhere really. Silent Hill and Amnesia being obvious ones. Clock Tower, Haunting Ground, and Alan Wake as well. Tons of movies too.

CooL, welcome to NeoGAF! Your game looks awesome. Love the atmosphere.

Although going by the game description...little girl using flashbangs might seem kind of weird. Can;t wait for this. Got my vote on Greenlight

I've lurked here for a very long time. Just never posted much (Once...I think)

Thanks for the vote and support!

Every screenshot of your game looks so atmospheric. You're planning a Kickstarter, right?

And how is the game ranking on Greenlight? I've read some articles recently that really changed my opinions of the service. So I hope Malebolgia is doing well.

I didn't know Mirrormoon had puzzles. So there's more than just exploration for the sake of exploration?
Is it procedurally generated, always new planets to find?
Do you go through space Outer Wilds-style?
Are you always moving, like in the trailer? Or can you take your time, stop, admire the view?

Its not procedural but has hundreds of planets, you dont navigate through space yourself but with a menu, not spoiling the gun/gadget (and I suggest deleting that question if you dont want someone else to spoil it for you), and you can and will admire the view.

SapientWolf

Trucker Sexologist
This one caught my eye at PAX. It sort of looks like a multiplayer version of Panzer Dragoon.

Dragons of Elanthia

Dragons of Elanthia is a free-to-play, multiplayer aerial shooter in which players select different dragons and riders, each with unique abilities, to fight it out over the skies of a world wracked by uncontrolled magic. The game features an ever-expanding roster of dragons and riders—come blast your enemies out of the air in epic team battles!

Thanks for answers. Game looks absolutely gorgeous and now that I know there are puzzles as well as tons of exploration, I'm really tempted to buy...but I wish I could try it first.

Anyway, thanks again for Dredmor! You probably saw my impressions. It's very good, although I do wish you saw your clothing and armor on your character

Yeah, unfortunately not possible in that game. Regarding the Mirrormoon tech demo, pm Hofmann. Apparently he found it somewhere online still.

And let me know whether the demo helped with your decision to buy the game.

We chatted on Steam already:D

So I'm really enjoying Mirrormoon EP. Naming planets is my new form of digital crack. The game is a relaxing visual masterpiece that, combined with the wonderful yet alien soundtrack, invokes a sense of awe every time you explore and witness a new surreal landscape.

While I do wish the puzzles were a bit more involved and challenging, what's there is different and visually exciting and adds depth to the exploration. But the highlight is the exploring and in the aspect, Mirrormoon succeeds. If you enjoyed Proteus or are anticipating Skipping Stones, enjoy exploration for the sake of exploration, or just want to play something unique and abstract, I'd recommend Mirrormoon EP.

I don't think it's been covered much, but I'm sort of loving Delver, which just hit Steam as an Early Access game.

It's a rogue-like FPS, with a visual style that reminds me a lot of Heretic, and maybe some of the earlier Elder Scrolls. It's not a complex game, but the combat is solid, the loot/leveling is satisfying, and the fear of permadeath, without being overly difficult, makes it a fun romp.

I sort of love the visuals, but it seems they might be changing them. And there are a few UI things I hope will get ironed out. But I've been having a blast so far.

Did you play any of the early versions of the game? If so, has the game evolved much since then? On paper, it should be the kind of game I love but when I tried it a few months ago it just wasn't clicking for me. I am not sure what it was but I found it a bit boring.

Another cool freebie. Was in development for ten years. Yes, ten, as in 10.

Mayhem Triple

Mayhem Triple is a cinematic platformer focusing on exciting set-pieces and violent, fast gunplay. Development first started on the game in 2003, though there have been several iterations. You play as Miguel “Mig” Carter, a man of few means but great skill, who is rudely awakened by the apocalypse and is tasked with sorting it out. Thousands of rabbit-esque aliens are entering the Earth’s atmosphere, and their numbers keep increasing by the hour. Helping put a dent in their population is an assortment of more than 20 powerful weapons and hidden Illuminati devices. Featuring smooth, dynamic controls, 5 insanely varied levels, a comprehensive New Game+ system and a great original soundtrack, Mig’s not going to let time nor space get in the way of being mankind’s savior!

This is my first experience with it. I did read some user feedback from others who played both versions and they seemed positive, but I have nothing else beyond that.

Admittedly it does get a bit repetitive after a bit, and I wonder if some sort of persistence would be beneficial (like Rogue Legacy), but I was really enjoying what I played. It reminded me a lot of my favorite rogue-like, a little game called Cursed Loot on Xbox Indie Games. I really wish he'd bring that game to Steam/mobile, such a great little game.

It was Dark Souls. :)

Kickstarter soon, maybe within the next two weeks. I want to have it ready to go with a nice demo for the press, and maybe a new trailer as well.

It's about halfway to the top 100 on Greenlight, got a big boost after the previous top 100 passed. Thing is, there are barely any new visitors or votes since a week after launch. I hope the Kickstarter and general publicity campaign will boost that back up.
