Indie Games [September] Now Voting - Post 878!

Didnt forgot today!

Picked up Out There Somewhere for a buck on Shinyloot and it is excellent. It helps that I have a soft spot for puzzle platformers and pixel graphics. More games need to use teleporting as a mechanic. Out There Somewhere is a challenging platformer that utilizes its mechanic in many inventive ways and I can't recommend it enough

I'm watching a streaming from Outlast and no way I could play this game! Though for the horror games fans it seems to be a nice experience.

Holy crap! Didn't know about the game or the site. Thanks. Picked up a copy since the game looks sweet :)

Cool fact about Shinyloot: you get free money for user reviews. 0.40 for your first review, 0.15 for every other one. I don't spend a cent of my own money on Out There Somewhere

Guys, you have to try the new and improved SuperHot
http://superhotgame.com/

I know I recommended it to Toma, but really they took the 7DFPS version, made it even more stylish, remixed the scenarios, and it's just so awesome. I want a full length game like now.

---
Edit: Post your impressions, Toma. I might pass up Audiosurf 2 for Incognita if it's really good.

This was awesome. What a game; do they plan on having a stand-alone at some point?

They have awesome ambitions
SUPERHOT can go many directions and we would like to take all those roads :). Imagine a shootout in a hectic car traffic - where you have to avoid cars and bullets. Imagine a shootout in a building being demolished, with everything falling in slow motion. We want more then rooms with people and I hope that we can deliver that.

And the dev or at least one of the devs is a GAFfer (Spierek)

Yeah, I'll echo the praise for Superhot as well. I liked the demo a lot. It's a really cool concept has plenty of potential. If they can create more areas like that room near the end with multiple pillars while making the game a bit more challenging then I can't wait! It could really be like dancing around bullets.

I'm pretty sure bullets could only break glass but not go through it to hit an enemy in the demo. So what if rubble from the building was falling down all around you and you had to shoot between said rubble to kill enemies while deflecting their bullets with it as all? Now that could be cool.

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
Can someone explain the puzzle game Strata? Game is releasing on IOS tonight and might get it if I understand what was going on
I wrote a post (technically, two—the second is linked from the first) about it back in August.

If you do buy it...you gotta let me know if the enigmatic fifth set shown here pops up after you finish the first four. Or if it's there from the beginning.

We really want to flesh it out and release as a stand-alone, but for now it's too soon to say anything for sure.

Best FPS ever.
Great to hear that :)

+1 for Super Hot. Most fun I've had with a FPS in years. Really makes you feel like an action hero.
That was exactly our intention, nice to know you liked it so much.

We've been getting quite a few requests for "Matrix lobby"-styled rooms, so we'll certainly experiment with those.

More like "one of the"; our core team consists of four guys :)

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Great to hear that :)

I was only half joking, this style of gameplay puts a huge emphasis on tactics and strategy into the genre which I am very much enjoying. If you really manage to pull off the scenes that you are apparently planning to, this game will find many, many fans.

On another note, apparently I got into the Frozen Endzone Beta, yay.

Awesome. Can't wait to hear your impressions. I don't think there's any sport better suited for the FS style gameplay than (American) football

No sure if this game was mentioned already, released in August

Treasure Adventure World also has a Greenlight page: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=171231318

I may not care for the art, but the (original) game is still one of the best I've played. Maybe we'll get the original on Steam or something!
I hope they tweaked the ending. It ended so abruptly after the final boss fight that it left me feeling rather empty. The 100% completion bonus scene only helped a little bit.

Participated in a 48-hour game jam with the guy behind this (and some other people who had never made a game before) some years back. It's pretty simple but it's free for anyone interested. Here's the GGJ page and here's the game (for those who can't see the link buried somewhere in the GGJ page).

What's Stuart Ashen doing there on the bottom-right?

Going by the greenlight page I believe they improved the story. Quoting them:
Enhanced story - more tightly focused story, intriguing cutscenes, charming NPCs and new multiple endings

Here are a few more of the opening post games impressions

Legend of Dungeon – Didn’t Buy
-/5

Life Goes On
Actually impressed me more than I thought it would. Life Goes On is a puzzle platformer where you leave behind a corpse whenever you die which your next life can use to hold down switches, use as platforms and other stuff. Although I found the graphics a little grotty in texture, the puzzles are surprisingly creative and felt interesting despite me playing a fair few puzzles games with similar concepts. One to keep an eye on.
4/5

Lily Looking Through
Looks fantastic, but not really my thing. You click on objects in the background and the character interacts with them. It’s all fairly slow and has more the impression of an interactive movie then anything that will actually challenge you. I gotta admit, it bored me after a fairly short amount of time.
3/5

Mouse Craft
In the opening post Toma quotes ‘Lemmings with Tetris Blocks.’ I honestly can’t top with how spot on that is. Mouse Craft is a real solid game that does everything right in a way, although it’s also just a little dull in execution.
3/5

Neverending Nightmares
I maned up and gave this a go and liked it although horror isn’t really my thing. The final experience was very tense although some of the graphical elements especially the animations just don’t work for me and give the game a slightly cheap feel that is hard to not get distracted by. Potentially fairly cool and something that even I might look into once it is done, although sadly it doesn’t look like it is going to make it funding-wise.
4/5

Nihilumbra
I actually played this on my iPod a while back when it was free. Nih is a side on game where you wander a barron landscape and navigate obstacles by painting colours onto the world which has different properties. One of the early ones is like a bouncy paint that lets you jump higher. All feels a little like a 2D version of that part on Portal 2 that has all those magic paints. I did like this game, it’s all fairly simple to get through but it saves itself by having this mildly disturbing wasteland vibe that resonates quite well through it. I would recommend it if you like distinctively lonely games and I do belive it would probably be a better play on the PC. Some of the more demanding sequences with touch controls can be a bit of a nightmare.
4/5

Oknytt – Didn’t Buy
-/5

Papers, Please!
So many impressions about this that are written far more creatively than I ever could make me that it is pointless to do deep in right now. So all I will say is that this will be on a lot of people top 10 of the year list and deservingly so.
5/5

Papo & Yo – Didn’t Buy

Postmortem
Postmortem is a game where you play as death and are tasked with taking the life of one party goer in this school fund raiser that you are dropped into. Before you make your choice you can wander round a bit, chat to people, and learn the history of the land and its political clashes. I enjoyed it, but its nature is one of information overload so my final choice was a bit more randomly inspired then by any driven choice. Although the presentation is rather nice and certainly worth blasting through once.
4/5

Actually some rather strong games out in the opening post. I would recommend looking back on them if anyone gets the chance.

Welcome. I'm a sucker for nonviolent games, even more if they look as gorgeous as yours, so feel free to post any updates on the project.

Roger! Next big update will come in some weeks, for now I suggest German speaking gaffers getting the latest issue of Digital Production - it features a big article on "Daina: The Herbarium" with a lot of artwork & an in-depth look at how the game is being created.

Cloudberry Kingdom is $6.57 on Nuuvem

And what happend to More_Badass? It was a pretty busy day for me today and when I'm back to GAF he's banned o_O. Huge loss he posted some indie gems in this thread.

OTOH the lastest Metavendetta podcast was very good, and I'm trying to download some games to write my opinions but my connection is being shitty today. -_-

7 day ban for posting some pretty harmless stuff in the GTA thread as "spoiler".

A Good Husband

I may be missing some thing in this game, I did some house chores
then I got a blowjob in the end?

Lily Looking Through

The short demo is amazing! I love how the scenaries looks like a painting the characters are cute and the plot seems interesting. The demo has only to scenaries but shows that this game is going to have interesting mechanics involving the goggle she finds. Play it if you like adventure games.

A Good Husband is almost a mirror of a previous game I released called A Good Wife which was for an EGP competition where you make a game for the opposite sex. It was one of the first games I ever made (and the first Unity game ever on Kongregate) and it's pretty bad, and since Husband is nearly a mirror it's pretty bad too. I made it in a week with the intent of putting it in my current game as a playable arcade cabinet, but it was at odds with the atmosphere I wanted to create so I just uploaded it by itself. Speaking of the new thing, I would upload some screenshots of it but I'm new here and dunno if that's acceptable or not.

I've lurked your threads for awhile Toma (noticed a lot of hits from one of your previous threads which led me here in the first place). Led me to some interesting indie games. Especially Paper, Please. I'm real jealous of that developer, it's an incredible game.

Also want to second whoever mentioned Betrayer, it is a great experience so far even just being alpha. Incredibly tense with a striking art style. Also pretty mysterious and atmospheric, my type of game.

I enjoyed these games FWIW. I'm a sucker for simple, mundane settings and stories where you fill in the blanks however you like (within certain boundaries). So thanks for making these!

I think more games should a) try out an elliptical short story/short film kind of format (Gravity Bone/Thirty Flights of Loving are amazing examples of this ) and b) try and touch on subjects like love, marriage, death, monotony, murder, everyday life and its wonders, its dark sides, etc. Take a cue from literature/film and go for it!

I hope we'll see more of that stuff moving forward, with games like Kentucky Route Zero, To The Moon or Gone Home on everyone's radar.

Don't get me wrong, the games idea seems interesting and if it was more developed could have caugh my attention. I found strange she could be mad with you about everything you tried to do for her (cook, watching tv with her etc).
Then after she being mad for so much time, she could reward me when I went upstairs.

Being able to let the toilet seat up and losting points for it was fun. :D

And it's ok to post screenshots of your new project in this thread.

I agree with your issues with it PandaPedinte. I think I tried to make it too similar to the previous one that I overlooked some of those issues. Definitely a missed opportunity, it could have been better. Oh well, I learned from that mistake at least.

Me too, but I guess you can tell-Gravity Bone was a big inspiration to me. Deus Ex was as well, and I think my two recent fps games (king of the wood, and the next one) are me trying to combine those types of games.

Since it's okay I uploaded a small album of shots I took tonight: http://imgur.com/a/wC3WJ
The game is unfinished and the ship is mostly empty, so try to look past the dull empty gray as I'm going to put more effort into that later once the gameplay is mostly on the finished side. It's a FPS with a little bit of stealth (you can disable enemies without shooting them, hide in vents and closets, etc) with a focus on a few main puzzles and storytelling told through audiologs and emails (probably cliché by now but it's too late to turn back). In addition to Deus Ex this game is heavily inspired by the film Solaris and System Shock 2. Those were my inspirations anyway, the writer has his own. And his is where the name Xanadu name from, which is the name of the ship and what we're calling the game.

I wanted to re-introduce my game Heroes of a Broken Land - I posted it here about 4 months ago when it was first released, and now it's just been released as Beta and put on Greenlight.

It's a procedural dungeon crawler with a world and town management layer. Kinda Heroes of Might and Magic meets Wizardry.

I still remember that :) I'll check it out again. Oh and that huge "Click here to play" still makes me laugh, haha.
