Rockstar warns: don't install GTA5 Xbox 360 "play" disc -

How big is the 'play' disc to install please?
Almost 8 GB I believe, but it won't fit on an 8 GB stick. You'll need at least a 16 GB drive since the 360 takes up about 1.5 GB when you configure one for the system.

Edit: beaten multiple times

Played it off an external 64GB HD that the 360 deemed wasn't up to scratch in terms of recommended power; ran fine, really. I'm going to install it on the actual console and see how it fares comparatively.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

yeah the 360 often reports most things 'not up to par'. I used a portion of my 1TB USB3.0 Western Digital USB HDD and the 360 still said it wasn't up to par. I enjoyed a good laugh at first then carried on using the same drive, everything works just as fast as the official 360 HDD.

DF ran an article when USB installs were first introduced, seems like the 360 caps all transfer rates at 16MB/s only (to avoid over heating i suppose), including the official HDD and if you're using a good portable/USB HDD.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-storage-update-the-flash-factor-article?page=4

When is that df article comming out?

They said 11AM UK time so I suppose in a few hours.

just played mine, installed the disc 1 on the HDD as recommended, played the first two missions with the disc 2 in the dvd tray not much noise, i didn't notice any pop-up, i have now stopped the game & am installing the play disc (2) to a Patriot Supersonic Boost XT 16GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (amazon link http://goo.gl/gMkvqN ) i had laying about, took about ten mins to install, works ok, just like when the play disc (2) is in the drive.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but this problem is on the PS3 as well.

Two of my friends got the game, one friend got a retail copy and the other friend bought it from PSN. The start of the game was very similar to that digital foundry video. Retail copy looked similar to 360 copy without second disc installed, and PSN copy was similar to 360 copy with second disc installed. I think the pop in might actually be even more severe than 360 with second disc installed.

How much better is it with having the play DVD installed on a USB instead on the HDD or playing it with the DVd tray?

you have three choices,

disc 1 & 2 installed on the HDD = causes pop-up
disc 1 installed on the HDD & disc 2 in the DVD drive = causes no pop-up (way game was ment to be used)
disc 1 installed on the HDD & disc 2 installed on a USB = causes no pop-up (cuts down DVD tray noise).

i have played both set-ups, with the DVD in the tray & the play disc on a USB & the actual game plays exactly the same, the only difference is the X360 is quieter.

if you don't have a USB don't worry about it, just play from the DVD the X360 version was designed to be used like this, i know people want to play the game at it's best, but people are worrying over nothing really.

Damn, I only read this just now, and I am indeed experiencing pop up when playing my installed disc 2.

But I don't want to hear the goddamn noise of the 360 :(

What is the minimum read and write speed of the USB-drives that is recommended for an optimal playing experience on the Xbox 360?

Thank you for answering this. I asked Eurogamer on Twitter and no one responded. I figured that HDD and USB install would be faster but if it's just a noise issue I'll just leave off the USB install.

well i have not noticed anything graphics-wise since putting on the USB, maybe there are things in the graphics but there is so much going on on the screen unless you look for it you won't notice it, the other thing is that by having it on a USB & HDD it is always ready to play like a digital game, i will be playing this game a huge amount so the USB might be the best option, you can install the play disc later at anytime to a USB.

people asking about the speed of the USB, i don't know some have said that cheapo USB's have been rejected by their X360 when formatting the USB, MS recommend SanDisc USB special X360 ones, but i would say that any 2.0 SanDisc will work, the best to be sure would be a USB 3.0, yes the X360 is only 2.0 but the speed of the 3.0 drive will inherently faster, so any should work in a X360.

So I picked up a 32gb Sandisk from Walmart to try this USB trick... but after I configured it I got a "Performance Warning" message saying that it might not be suitable for use... ok? Should I take this seriously or is this just Microsoft's way of trying to get people to buy the "official" Xbox USB drive?

There isn't one, SanDisk drives are just often subpar. Chances are it'll work but you're probably going to have some pop in.

Any tips for getting rid of jaggies? My tv is native 720 and I have my Xbox at 720 as well. Maybe I need to adjust the sharpness...

I experienced the exact same pupups with the PSN version :(
The major one I noticed was the beach one on my PSN version, with the sand texture and background objects popping in. Also on the first driving mission with Franklin all the gas pumps at a gas station popped in about 5 feet away from me. Pretty fucking disappointed.

I figured I might as well get a digital version since it's the last game I get for PS3. Assumed it would be fine, but of course Steam has spoiled me.

Is the USB stick a generally more optimal choice of installing games instead of the hard drive? Will they run a bit smoother? What about Arcade games?

So a USB 3.0 flash drive should be perfectly fine, right? What brands would you guys recommend for speed? Seems like Kingston and Patriot were mentioned a bit.

The 360 doesn't support USB 3.0 speeds, so a nice USB 2.0 drive (which is cheaper) will perform equally well. Just sayin'...

Well, I know but it looks like read speeds seem pretty inconsistent among the different USB 2.0 options/brands. I was wondering if USB 3.0 read speeds would at least all be adequate. I'd probably end up using the flash drive with my PC eventually as well.

For me it's not a noise issue, I have a slim 360 which is virtually silent. It's a wear and tear issue. I bought this 360 the day my launch 360 died (the day after Halo Reach came out!) and the only time I've ever used the DVD drive is to install games. If the XBone was BC, it wouldn't be a thang, but it looks like I'll need to keep my 360 in working order for several more years to come, so I'm going to continue avoiding running any games in the DVD drive. Definitely installing the play disc to a flash.

Question:
How do you designate the 'Play'(Disc 2) Data after you've installed it on a USB drive?

I installed mandatory Disc 1. Then the game prompts you to insert Disc 2.

If you insert Disc 2, the game proceeds to load and only prompts you one more time for a device to store your game save file.

I have Disc 1 installed on the HDD.
I have Disc 2 installed on a 16GB USB.
I can only get the game to run after I insert physical Disc 2.

How are people getting the 360 to read Disc 2 data from a USB drive?

You have to have the disc in the drive to be able to play it, no matter how you install it. Same for every 360 game. Otherwise people would install the game then sell it.

That's clear. But here's the million dollar question:

If Disc 1 data is installed to HDD, Disc 2 data is installed to USB and physical Disc 2 is loaded in the DVD drive, how does anyone know for certain that the 360 is reading data from the USB drive?

I ask because last night, I could definitely hear my 360 DVD drive seeking/accessing data from the loaded Disc 2, throughout a 30 minute play session, despite my USB drive being plugged in. Usually, installed 360 games have an initial disc security check and then disc access stops. The DVD drive doesn't spool up again until you return to the Dashboard.

Unless R* included an installation prompt asking the player where to find Disc 2 data, I'd think the 360 is ignoring the USB drive and simply loading from physical Disc 2, as R* had intended.

Can anyone confirm that their 360 stops reading physical Disc 2 a minute after the game loads? If not, then buying a USB drive, for now, seems pointless. (-_-)

Ah I see what you are asking, and I do not know. I can tell when a game is loading and not, sadly I've yet to get to play the game as I'm at work until 5.

No worries. The install/HDD/DVD debate isn't a gamebreaker(perhaps a console-breaker lol). It would be better if we didn't have to rely on the DVD drive for streaming, but there doesn't appear to be a perfect solution. Anyways, your wait is almost over. Enjoy your game!

Answer me this fellow gaffers, I work in IT specifically networking but am a bit baffled by this. If I install the play disc on a separate external hard drive, not a flash USB stick and then install the "install" disc on my 360 hard drive will this be ok? Just played it for a while and no pop in or anything so seems ok???

I installed both discs and I have no problems at all. Perhaps the HDD of the Xbox 360 S from 2010 is faster than the one from 2005.

As I installed GTA 4 on my Xbox 360 Premium I had big streaming issues, on my Xbox 360 S everything was fine.

The PSN version reads from HDD only, too.

So I just plug in a regular 16GB USB Flash drive into the 360 and when I click install game on the dashboard there should be a USB storage option?

Have to install. Anyone had success with a USB stick?

Yes

Pin the GTA USB drive to your home menu, if you then click on it with no dvd in the drive it will ask for the game (play) disc, put it in the drive, it will then check the file code/DRM stuff then spin down, it will then read from the USB, get a USB with a light on you will see it working.

I have used both the HDD - Disc way of playing & now the HDD - USB i will continue using the HDD - USB.

People asking about the USB 3.0 yes the X360 is USB 2.0 but with a 3.0 you know for sure it will be fast enough, they are two or three pounds/euros/dollars more than the 2.0, i use 3.0 anyway because my laptop is 3.0.

I have a spare 20GB original 360 drive somewhere around my house with that transfer cable thing. Does someone know if I can use it as external storage on my current 360? (120GB Elite)

Cheers! That's what I was looking for. I'll try these directions when I get home.

When I try to install on USB flash I get partway and I get a disk reading error - which I assume is from the DVD rather than the USB. Yet I can install it fine on the Xbox 360 HD.

To be honest it looks fine on the HD to me, I've not had issues I've noticed. But I was interested in trying it on a thumbstick.

installing play disc to external flash HDD currently (70%)

after 13 hours playing the "recommended way" the game is an absolute blast

I will post any differences other than spin noise.

Maybe you guys who have it on PSN might need to defragment your ps3s. I can usually notice aggressive pop-in issues (like in Saints Row 2), but I haven't had a problem really. Not anything like that 360 disc install comparison video. I'm using a 5400rpm Western Digital black 750gb HDD so maybe that makes a difference *shrug*

Question - I currently have my profile on an 8gb USB in my 360. Will everything work right if I use another USB stick to install the play disc? 2 USB sticks at once?

Man I love all these edge cases. Rockstar single handedly turned plug and play console gaming into a PC configuration nightmare.

That is a damn good question. I'm assuming once it gets the profile data through the USB, it will stop using the USB bus and leave it fully open to access the pen drive.

But who really knows. Maybe Microsoft constantly queries your profile data, clogging up the USB bus.

Working perfectly! DVD drive access stopped and data is streaming from the USB. Thanks alan666!
