- AMC Prepping ‘Walking Dead’ Companion Series Produced By Robert Kirkman & Gale Anne Hurd For 2015 Premiere
AMC is expanding another successful series into a scripted franchise. After giving the go-ahead last week to Better Call Saul, a spinoff series from Breaking Bad, the network just announced that it is in the initial stages of developing a companion series to mega hit The Walking Dead. The new drama series has a target on-air date of 2015. It will be will be executive produced by The Walking Dead executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert for AMC Studios. “Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. He noted that the companion series will have “an entirely new story and cast of characters”. “It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse,” he said. Added Kirkman, on whose comic The Walking Dead was based. “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.” Season 3 of The Walking Dead ranked as the top program on television (broadcast or cable) among adults 18-49. Season 4 kicks off Oct. 13. Besides their scripted extensions, both The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad also spawned talk show companion series, Talking Dead and Talking Bad, respectively.

Hmm. I am not excited, but I am intrigued. There are certainly possibilities. What they'll do with them, though, is probably wrap them around love triangles and bullshit. BUT MAYBE THEY WILL SURPRISE US.

I like the notion of seeing how others are handling the walkers. But I hope they take this opportunity to introduce other challenges. Place this in Nova Scotia or a setting where climate can become as much an enemy as walkers. How about a cruise ship that was under way when the outbreak took 3/4 of the living out.

Twilight‘s Christian Serratos is joining another blockbuster genre franchise, this time on TV. Serratos has been cast in the upcoming fourth season of AMC’s hit zombie drama The Walking Dead. She will play
the tough and beautiful Rosita Espinosa, a character introduced in Issue 53 of the comic book. Rosita survived the mysterious undead apocalypse that has taken over the planet. Serratos will recur on Season 4 with an option to become a regular in Season 5.
The actress, repped by Global Artists Agency and Thruline Entertainment, is best known for playing Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) best friend Angela in Summit’s Twilight movie franchise.

I've never seen The Twilight movies but is Serratos considered a good actress? I checked her filmography on imdb and didn't really recognize her from anything else.

I see 'Better Call Saul' as a more creatively driven decision. The writers have been talking about wanting to do a Saul spin off for quite a while now, and if AMC (which doesn't produce Breaking Bad, btw) had decided to pass on it, it would have still gone to series with another network (probably Netflix).

AMC does produce 'The Walking Dead', however, so this actually does seem to me like a cash in. I do think that it makes a lot of financial sense, though I wonder how long AMC has before the zombie fatigue sets in? They really need to focus on making this new spin off series vastly different from 'The Walking Dead' because I don't think people really want the same thing that they've been getting for the last few years, only with different characters in a new setting.

Unless they're going to introduce Rosita at the prison, this makes me think they're going to end the prison storyline sooner rather than later. Perhaps Season 4.B will deal with the 'Here We Remain' and 'What We Become' arcs?

I'm thinking they're doing the spin off series so they don't have to rely on the comic books. Can come up with their own stories and not have fans of the books getting upset. It'll just be a zombie show set in the same universe with occasional cameos probably.
