Remember people that this is meant to be a replacement for keyboard and mouse. Its not meant to be like the regular controller lol.

Yeah it has to be, because as someone who primarily plays with a controller on most PC games that looks horrible to use in place of one. But at the same time I'm not even sure I want to try and use that for something like Crusader Kings II, it looks like it'll get in my way more than a m/kb does.

Touch pads replacing sticks is such a bad idea it would be over the top even for April fools.

Also the face buttons so far apart?

I haven't touched one obviously but I would be utterly shocked if this wasn't a piece of shit.

It still has lots to prove to replace PS4 as my next gen fix, but I'll make a choice in 2014, and SteamBox is now officially on my radar.

The placement of the ABXY buttons looks horrible. They're tiny triangles with one scooped edge. It looks like you're gonna be mishitting them all the time.

Well Im for one interested in the trackpads.

No thumbstick i used has enough stiffness for me, so its hard for me to get finer movement. However these look like the solution , looks promising.

My only concern is how durable is it. Can you drop it on its screen or is that EOL?

I think this is certainly a case of.. gotta try it before I judge it. But i am 100% going into this with an open mind. Why the hell not.. lets shake things up!

My only concern is how they intend to solve the keyboard dilemma. I remember a mock up of a really intuitive looking circular interface based on using sticks to write words, but believe it was done by an unaffiliated designer. I'll be curious to see their software solution.

....that exists. Today.

Steam Big Picture.

Or do you mean in-game?

The PC already supports your standard controllers. I'm glad they went in such a radical direction even if it doesn't work out. What's the benefit of a Valve variation of the dual analog controller?

Exactly, a reskinned/remapped 360 controller would have been useless. Hell, even Nintendo is producing those these days.

So how long did you have with the Steam Controller? Any other impressions?
I have to let go of my character movement to press half of the face buttons.

I had a N64, I don't need to try out this controller to know I'm going to absolutely loathe it. Thankfully this is Valve and they aren't going to force anyone to use this thing but still.

Looks pretty awful. Well, asthetically it looks nice but it has the same relatively useless super small touchpad the DS4 has and replaces sticks with touch pads...regardless of how good the hapyic feedback is it won't feel as nice as real sticks

It looks and sounds awesome.

I already have a 360 controller, so I definitely didn't need another dual analog, 4 face button, 4 shoulder button controller. Thanks, Valve. Of course I'll need to read some reviews first.

If it plays Tropico better than the Xbox version then I'm gonna try it. Looks like it should.

I can't see myself playing street fighter with it though. But I don't think having multiple pads to suit my purpose will be an issue either.

Oh fucking please, get off your high horse. The triggers look like shit and they make a point of not talking about them.

The platformed thing is dead on. I don't think this is made for them particularly. I don't think anything could give you that digital sense of moving exactly when you press a button. That said, you probably already own a controller that does that stuff pretty perfectly. This solves a different problem. Its okay to have two controllers. Worst case scenario, you have to sell your dualshock 4 for this one you can use the click on the touchpad too make it a faux-digital solution.

I'm intrigued by the track pad thing. But not having any sort of d-pad or traditional face button layout is crazy to me at this point. You're gonna have to move your thumbs of the track pads a lot to be playing games that aren't shooters such as platformers and the like.

clearly i'm not the target audience, since I don't feel any need to "play on the sofa". still, looks useless.
I'm a PC gamer who doesn't play on a sofa either, and I still use my wired 360 controller for a lot of single player games. It's simply superior for certain games/genres, for example platformers like Super Meat Boy, and a lot of third person games (in my opinion).

No buttons, no thanks.

Looks like the 360 controller shall remain the definitive PC controller.

Just think if they'd put those 2 trackpads in the positions of the 2 sticks on the 360 pad, and then placed a touchscreen in the centre (X) button area.

All the control of trackpads and all the function of a standard controller layout to suit all the other types of games. I wouldn't have lost any of this "great for K/M games" setup, while keeping the ability to play games that work best with 4 easy access face buttons and a dpad.

I would love to see the original Nintendo Wii controller unveil thread, I bet the initial reactions weren't much different to the ones in here.

I still have a lot of questions about this design too, but there s clearly a lot of forward thinking going on here.

Your point is moot. N64 controller had sticks. This has no sticks. No sticks is winning!!!

Totally not enough information to make a decision right now on how the thing works.

Not sure I like the touchscreen. Devs will have to spend time designing a UI for that thing and it seems like Valve expects it to be a necessary element to control PC games.

Fighting games, games where you really "need" the joysticks;
- X360/DS

PC games, based on keyboard/mouse input:
- Steam controller

My reaction pattern went from:

WTF -> That's weird -> Hmm reading --> wow intrigued --> Hyped, wanna try it.

Any other company who would've come up with this shit would've gotten some flak.
I trust in Valve, haven't let me down so far.

Wish they would have included one analog stick + Haptic trackpad. That would replicate Mouse and keyboard better than this imo.

Honestly I thought Nintendo would have done this first.

Geez, it's crazy to see the amount of knee-jerk reactions on stuff like this. It's definitely unique, but they obviously made distinct changes from the normal formula for a reason, it's worth it to at least find out why they did what they did and if it works before jumping off the cliff of conclusions.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
One haptic track pad? Okay. Two? Nope, you've lost the plot.

You need a physical stick or set of buttons for movement, unless we all want to control games like SegaSonic Arcade?

Honestly PS4 pad seems to be the "be all" right now with touch pad AND buttons.

I don't get it. If those face buttons correspond to the normal ABXY buttons in like a 360 controller, does that mean I have to move my left thumb away from the trackpad just to press Y or X?

My first impression was that the thing was brilliant.

I come to GAF and I get a bunch of console dudebros flipping out that it doesn't have sticks.
Agreed. I've been envisioning how things will go with my gaming library and it seems that most, if not all, will be perfectly fine.

I'm just glad that we finally have a controller that is going to mimic the KB&M properly.

One thing to note is that the prototypes they'll be shipping don't have a touch screen but four additional buttons in its place. They're considering this still to be part of a testing program for the controller, so you never know, the design could change somewhat.

I'll definitely get one, just for curiosities sake.

But man, I dunno. I can see it being good with some games, and terrible with others. I cannot imagine trying to play a Street Fighter game with that for instance. I don't know if I will be able to acclimatize to being able to interact with the buttons on the left hand side trackpad.

Just going to have to wait and see, I hope it surprises me. No doubt they spent a lot of time testing this thing out before showing us.

The face buttons probably won't even be the face buttons; the functions that the face buttons used would be on the right haptic pad.

It's like complaining you can't use the D-Pad and L-button on the N64 controller when you are using the analog stick; you don't need to because the functions of the game aren't mapped to them.
