That ad would definitely steal attention during MNF. When commercials air, people tend to divert their attention away from the TV, either to talk a friend, text, eat, etc. Commercials (sonically) generally fall into 4 categories: conversational dialogue over soundtrack, montage music (no dialogue), conversational dialogue with no music, and (the rarest and most risky) silent commercial. How often do you hear acapella* on your TV? Amateur acapella* at that? That would definitely get me to look back at the screen if even for a "what the fuck am i listening to?" moment. The strange singing juxtaposed with the wild racing and chaotic battlegrounds makes for a very intriguing combination that would definitely keep my attention for 30 seconds.
What some people fail to understand is that a commercial's level of engagement completely relies on the field of commercials it stands up against. The commercial was different, weird even, but mostly different. On Monday Night Football, which is be full of standardized car commercials with ambient/electronic music and 'comedic' fast food ads, this bizarre singing commercial would definitely stand out. It's not about making the "coolest commercial evar!" It's simply about garnering attention and generating talk. I don't even have to mention that this commercial is not meant for people, who already ordered the system and want more gameplay footage. That goes without saying.
*Edit: Just rewatched. Noticed that the beginning isn't even completely acapella. Didn't pick up on piano on the first watch.
Edit2: I actually think the commercial would have been perfect if it ended up with a shot panning out to a TV screen, with the PS4 in frame, and the two friends sitting side by side. That would get the console image into people's mind. That's the only real missed opportunity I see here. Otherwise, it was a good commercial.
