Here is how replacing your HDD on PS4 works (ComputerBild)

Looks like the latest update says the Testing PS4 takes 21 seconds to boot, if my Google Translate is half way decent.

I assume that's from cold and not standby.

How quickly moves up the PS4? When tested in the laboratory, a value of just under 21 seconds was produced. FYI: This is the development version of the device. During testing, the panel is not connected to the Internet.

Authentic German here. The ps4 was not connected to the internet and it was a developer unit. 21 seconds to boot.

Sounds OK, provided it was a cold boot (and since I suspect the console to be in standby all the time anyway).

They've posted some noise tests after ten minutes running, compared to the first PS3. Seems to be quieter, but I'll wait for a german speaker to properly translate the measurements. Not sure they say what the machines were doing when the tests were taken.

New update. from google translate :

"to update the sound development of the PS4. In the laboratory, the editor measures the "noise" that produces the console menu mode. After ten minutes of run time are the Sone 0815, measured 40 inches away from the device. At this distance is heard a slight noise. By comparison, the first version of the PS3 is after ten minutes at 0.83 sone."

21 seconds isn't that fast is it? I need to time my PS3 at home I suppose, but I have the feeling it takes around the same amount of time to bootup to XMB.

Measured 40 cm from the exhaust, it made about the same noise as a launch PS3 (I've literally never heard of the unit "sone") and it's described as a light buzz.

Looks like we'll get another figure after 1 hour...this is just the menu though.

What will be interesting is if the PS4 can maintain the low noise and not get a similar effect as the PS3 where dust built up and meant over time it got progressively louder until after 10mins it was like a hair-dryer!

german updat..e

translated... Ps3 was 2.1 Sone after an Hour.. PS4 is 0,83...

1 Sone is 40dB for a 1kHz noise apparently.

So at 6-8ft which is the normal distance you won't be able to hear it.

EDIT: Still inaudible from a standard viewing position then after a hour, this bodes very well for multimedia.

The after-an-hour comparison is promising.

Still would be cool to see what it's like under load and/or when playing media, although I guess this all takes time. Media software might not be on the test units at this stage either.

Update number 2 in terms of noise: After an hour in the operation, the PS4 is significantly quieter than the PS3. The new console settles at 0.83 Sone a, the predecessor controls the fan at prolonged high, reaching a whopping 2.1 sone.

they need to do a test playing a bluray and/or an mp4 off the hard drive (if the dev unit even has multimedia capabilities). Something that makes the unit work at least a little harder than just idling on the home screen.

good start though.

The UI will be pretty reflective of media and even games to be honest looking at the power consumption of PS3 models:

Slim:
UI - 61 watts
FF13 - 72-79 watts
BD - 71-73 watts

Super Slim:
UI - 58 watts
FF13 - ~70 watts
BD - ~70 watts

Obviously more power and more heat, but it's really not much more. It's mainly the fact they use stepped fans.

Jokes a side note: the users in the U.S. forum NeoGAF prove humor. In a direct comparison gesture to Iwata, the Nintendo boss colleagues Schaffrath must not hide. Many thanks to the COMPUTER GAMES PICTURE Facebook fan-André Anders for the hint.

Lol... And Shoutout!

An update to the sound development of the PS4. In the laboratory, the editor measures the "noise" that produces the console menu mode. After ten minutes of run time are the Sone 0815, measured 40 inches away from the device. At this distance is heard a slight noise. By comparison, the first version of the PS3 is after ten minutes at 0.83 sone. In about an hour, the noise value follows after 60 minutes of run time. Then it is clearly more exciting.

Someone help me out with this one. Is there a way to convert to decibels?

I've sure they'll do plenty of tests.

Maybe even wattage ones.

I think what we all want to know is how it holds up when left running in a small perspex box with inadequate ventilation.

I think that the very first version of slim used more power. PS4 will be more in line of that model [~ 100-150 watts]

HDD update..

only 12.5 mm HDD fits...

Nice, that max height allows for some higher capacity drives. Assuming 9.5mm is still allowed, which it almost always is in enclosures that allow 12.5

Info about the hard disk:

5400rpm
max. height: 12,5mm

Very good, now I can order a new hard disk.

@tipoo: normal ones are 9,5mm (max. height for PS3 hard disks)

Mr. Community
They just updated with HDD info... anyone can translate?

This is google's

As there are more questions about the hard drive was, here are a few details: The PS4 a HGST (Western Digtal) inserted 2.5-inch drive with 500 gigabytes of memory and 5,400 rpm. Important info for all hobbyists: It will only plates with a maximum height of 12.5 millimeters in the case.

Is this a confirmation of 12,5mm and thus 3TB drives?

well maybe the extra space is required for airflow to keep temps down? just a thought
