DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

1600x900 is a disappointment. My roommate plays BF4 in 1920x1080 and Ultra Settings with an HD7870 (I'm not sure about the framerate, though). It's even more so disappointing after seeing the Killzone Shadow Fall graphics in 1080p.

That card almost has 700Gflops more then ps4 and is more then double the X1 card.

The One looks more natural and filmic; not as sterile or angular as the PS4.

Filmic.

Thank you.

At first I was on the XBone version looking good compared to the PS4. But after seeing the detailed gif comparisons... Hands down the ps4 takes the cake.

Edit:
The ps4 version has HBAO and it still holds a higher frame rate AND resolution? Yeah the XBone is completely outclassed.

Exactly. People were too quick to judge the black levels instead of looking at the actual details like clouds, AA, resolution, lighting etc. When compared in gif form like a lot of users are doing, its quite noticeable. This might be the biggest visual difference ive seen between multiplatform games (on consoles) since forever.

Like, seriously. I've read the first few pages of this thread and yes, I understand sharpening, contrast, flat black levels, etc. Has it been answered why the PS4 version textures look flat-out blurry in some parts? I mean, crushed blacks can't explain why I can see this dudes hair pattern clearly in this .gif but the PS4 version that detail is blurred. Does it have something to do with AA? A filter? The scaler in the PS4? My PS4 BF4 launch bundle is still a go, I'm just curious.

Higher contrast will bring the hair color out more from the skin and added sharpness will make the hair edges stand out more (with ringing artifacts). This is basic image processing, the textures are the same.

So is the capture the reason the PS4 version looks a mess in certain places compared to the Xbone shots? Some of those textures, man...

Can this be put in the OP?

Video Gamer Comparison:

I found it to be a much better comparison than Digital Foundry.

Huh, that is interesting.

Battlefield 4 on PlayStation 4 looks stunning, with DICE clearly utilising the console’s additional firepower to yield a superior image quality on Sony’s machine. Images are pin-sharp, appearing to run at a native 1080p and fluid 60 frames per second. But while the Xbox One version effortlessly maintains the same frame-rate, the image quality is perceptibly worse, sporting a softer, jaggier look that carries all the hallmarks of a game upscaling from a sub full-HD resolution. My suspicion is that the Xbox One version is rendering natively at 720p before upscaling to 1920x1080, although DICE opted not to confirm numbers when confronted about the resolutions of the two next-gen versions directly.

To some people, the difference will be negligible. Battlefield 4 on Xbox One is still visually astounding: the lighting and particle effects – particularly during the single-player campaign - are remarkable, and the fact that DICE manages to maintain a fluid 60FPS without a hitch is truly praiseworthy. Both versions offer a noticeable step up over the current-generation far beyond just the frame-rate, and while there are subtle differences in quality between the top-end PC version and next-gen console, few PS4 players will likely complain about the magnificent visual experience on offer here.

But to those that do care (presumably those of you reading this), the difference in image quality between the two consoles is clearly visible. In the Xbox One’s case – a hugely important launch title for Microsoft’s machine- it makes the step up to next-gen that little less spectacular, signifying a trait players have been used to for years on current-gen consoles and an obvious step down from PC.

But dat crispyness! :(

For the new page.

Comparison with PS4 image levels crushed and "sharpen more" filter and levels adjusted like this.

You can replicate this exactly in photoshop.

These are the source images I used, I only changed the PS4 "levels" (shown above) and "sharpen more" filter on photoshop.

This whole thread reminds me of the time Skyrim mods started coming out. A whole bunch of people released "high res" texture mods for the environment and objects but all they did was modify the contrast to make it look like they had more detail.

In the Jackfrags footage the x1 single player IQ is a mess while the ps4 multi player IQ looks much better. A complete contrast than DF.

This is all weird.

Man when are we getting call of duty comparisons?

That should be a real war. This was just a battle.

Holy shit @ missing x1 texture detail on the arm. It doesnt make sense... Why would they use another texture ? Maybe its a placeholder?

If you mean the player's arm in that shot, it looks like an entirely different camo pattern. Maybe you can customize your character in the campaign in that way.

/r/xbone celebrating like that just won the console warz :D

I cannot see a noticeable difference. It is amazing how people are so fixated on pixel count. The HTC one has a 400+ ppi count vs iPhone's 300+ ppi count, yet the iPhone tends to be the benchmark screen when it comes to cell phones. It just goes to show that pixel count doesn't mean everything.

Look at the ground textures. Are we 100% sure these aren't mislabeled by DF? The so called "XO" shot looks like it has much better texture detail.

Naw. PS4 version is properly labeled. It's higher resolution and it's pretty obvious from the extra aliasing on everything in the Xbone pic; from the grass, the debris, the birds, the crane wires, and buildings. Also notice how the PS4 dust is thicker, where the XBO dust is transparent.

I'm mostly an X1 guy but I actually prefer the softer, PS4 versions of the static screens in the OP.

I can see why some prefer the sharper xbox versions but it's kind of like comparing an ISF-calibrated plasma to a display/demo unit set on "Dynamic" at Best Buy.

Almost everyone that's watched anything on my TV asks me why it's so "blurry and washed out". They're basically just seeing unadulterated source material for the first time.

Yeah it looks like 2 different versions of the game. Why would they flatout change the uniform texture. Makes no sense.

Both of them look like a jaggy mess to me. Anyone that's smart and can afford it will build a pc for multiplatform games.

My 4670k and 760 gtx can't even do 1080p at 60 fps. It'll cost a bit more to run it at a constant 60 fps at 1080p. Spending much more than a grand to play and for some people that's too much.

From videogamer.com:
And with the console war heating up as we edge closer to the next-gen launch, DICE’s shooter may end up being a key factor in the war between Microsoft and Sony, with the PlayStation 4 version displaying a clear advantage over the Xbox One.
The differences between the two versions will come as great concern to Microsoft. Just as it appears to be regaining traction from its fumbling Xbox One campaign, the revelation that at least one of next-gen’s major launch titles is noticeably weaker on its console will be enough to threaten to send the platform holder back to square one. It’s difficult to tell how big a problem it may end up being until we’ve compared the complete multiplatform launch line-up it, but if the trend continues with further releases (as last week’s Call of Duty: Ghosts rumour suggests it may well do) even players heavily invested in the Xbox platform could be prompted to starting look elsewhere.
It may just be teething problems, of course, and as developers grow accustomed to working with Xbox One, issues related to native resolution may soon become a thing of the past. But that goes both ways. With the PS4 off to a stronger start, the divide between the two consoles may remain a constant as developers look to push that GDDR5 RAM and impressive GPU in ways they simply can’t on Microsoft’s console.

Now enjoy your crushed blacks

Someone suggested they may be using FXAA, which when I use FXAA on my gaming rig, it does give a bit of blurriness. It does clean the jaggies, but it does it by adding a little bit of blur.

That might be it, thanks. I sometimes have to use FXAA and it does smear a bit.
