To me the Xbox One version looks better, but the internet is telling me I'm wrong..
You can adjust sharpness and saturation settings on your TV without Microsoft doing it for you.
It's the same old ass trick 360 used.

From videogamer.com:

Now enjoy your crushed blacks
Not going to lie that was kinda harsh to read, I've been a multiconsole guy in the past but only preordered a PS4 after DRM gate but I honestly hate to see this I mean we needed the competition to keep our hobby vibrant and moving forward.

Like, seriously. I've read the first few pages of this thread and yes, I understand sharpening, contrast, flat black levels, etc. Has it been answered why the PS4 version textures look flat-out blurry in some parts? I mean, crushed blacks can't explain why I can see this dudes hair pattern clearly in this .gif but the PS4 version that detail is blurred. Does it have something to do with AA? A filter? The scaler in the PS4? My PS4 BF4 launch bundle is still a go, I'm just curious.

An increase in contrast can artificially make textures look "sharper" by making the details pop. As in the more you increase the contrast the less of a difference there is between the darkest and brightest part of an image, so what before was a gradual change in shading/color is now a much starker difference, so the difference between colors or shades (aka textures) appears stronger.

It scares me that based on how people are claiming the crushed blacks are better that they would think the Xbox version looks better than PC.

So, in all fairness.. and trying to be as objective as possible...

Do you guys think that the average family or average gamer would notice the difference between these two?

Here at GAF, we have master pixel-peepers with falcon eyes, so obviously people see the difference... right? :D

But also.. people see what they are told they are seeing, like the whole RYSE debacle.. (people thought first it was 1080p and everyone believed it but when it turned out it was 900p, then suddenly everyone "saw" it .....)

The MUCH MUCH bigger difference that EVERYONE will notice is the 100 dollar extra price tag and up till this point, MS has not done a good job convincing people about Kinect2, even though it is a far more advanced tech in it.

Basically, if MS would put them selves at 299 and call it a day, these gfx difference will not matter at all, everyone would say stuff like "yeah but at least it is cheaper".

That is what bothers people at NeoGaf the most, why someone has to pay more for less gfx fidelity. If Xbox One would be lower priced than PS4, everyone would swallow the difference like a bukkake show or something similar and then we could go on arguing about games games games.. :D

At first I was on the XBone version looking good compared to the PS4. But after seeing the detailed gif comparisons... Hands down the ps4 takes the cake.

Edit:
The ps4 version has HBAO and it still holds a higher frame rate AND resolution? Yeah the XBone is completely outclassed.

this is a problem that you often see in serious discussion on Audio/Visual forums...what is the picture "supposed" to look like?...

your eye is naturally drawn to things that a bright, saturated, and sharp...this is why when you go down to Best Buy all of the TV's are on "torch mode" with contrast and sharpness jacked up to the sky...

its also part of the reason why LCD's often look better at the store than Plasmas...because the LCD is gonna be bright, probably over saturated, and sharp as a muddafukka...

but if you have your TV professionally calibrated...when you first see it you will probably think its slightly washed out...and relatively soft....but after letting your eyes become accustomed to a "proper" setup...when you go check out your friends brand new TV and you sit in front of it your head will explode because the picture looks ridiculous...

Now, with all that being said...i do personally enjoy a little bit of "pop" to my color and a slight bit of added sharpness...so i do tick the contrast and sharpness up a smidge from its proper settings on my TV...just as i add a bit (ok more like a shit ton) of bass to my audio setup....that would probably make a real audiophile punch me in the balls...

In the Jackfrags footage the x1 single player IQ is a mess while the ps4 multi player IQ looks much better. A complete contrast than DF.

This is all weird.

DF had this to say though

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, in this near-finalised state, the PS4 offers a superior experience on several fronts. The resolution is higher at 1600x900, as compared to the tried and tested 1280x720 on Xbox One, suffering as it does for more visible aliasing artefacts. Visually, the PS4 has a marked advantage with ambient occlusion effects too, which simply isn't matched on Microsoft's platform with the build we played.

don't know what happened to their recording equipment

My Take Aways

1) PS4 clearly has a hardware advantage
2) Xbone not only lacks in resolution but also in effects
3) Despite the hype BF4 isn't exactly top tier graphics wise
4) Killzone looks a metric fuck ton better than both CoD and BF
5) I'm EXTREMELY worried about both systems seeing a game like BF4 not doing 1080p out of the gate and still having fps drops everywhere.

Is this the game from which people were posting gifs of collapsing building in Killzone threads? And proclaiming 1080p/60? Haha look how that turned out. I distinctly remember reading about Xbone having a lot of 1080p/60 launch games and PS4 with none too.

Lesson: Never believe in early hype, especially Microsoft's. (or, in Microsoft's case, never ever)

Thinks mods influence posters politics. Promoted to QAnon Editor.
Upscaling and sharpness filters never add information, so people need to stop thinking the textures are different, it is post processing. The assets are going to be the same.

If your going by the poorly calibrated DF video that questions their credibility... I don't blame you. If your going by anything else the PS4 version is superior, but the PC version is the real winner.

Why you think it questions theyre credibility? Did you read the article? They say the xbox is doing some contrast and gamma tweaking and for comparisons sake decided to run both at 30% setting instead of tweaking it.

Everyone who thinks XB1's scaler is magically awesome and that 720p is indistinguishable from 900p needs to take a long, hard look at this.

Honestly, the fact that we need a close-up comparison of a very specific area on the screen switching back and forth shows how similar the platforms are.

Holy shit @ missing x1 texture detail on the arm. It doesnt make sense... Why would they use another texture ? Maybe its a placeholder?

As said before, the camoflauge is generated randomly. Some of the PC shots "lose" detail because of that too.

ya know what is also driving me banana sandwich about this thread so far?...

while we are all sitting here...some say PS4, some say Xbone, some say wash....all of the people that wrote the articles, actually played it, and have seen it IN MOTION agree on one thing...

the PS4 wins, and its not close...interesting...

Honestly, the fact that we need a close-up comparison of a very specific area on the screen switching back and forth shows how similar the platforms are.

agree to an extent...but you see all of those areas that look like little white lines on the Xbone version??...that shit is going to move around and shimmer like crazy when in motion...

I want to know what those icons are...especially the orange one with the 4.

LOL I'm going to assume mad sarcasm but 4 players online on PSN friends list vs no players online on XBO friends list. Whether that is because XBL doesn't work or because he just hadn't added anyone, I don't know.

Both versions look good considering both consoles are heavily outclassed by high-end PC CPUs and GPUs. It's pretty incredible how well DICE managed to nearly replicate the look and smoothness of a decent midrange gaming rig. I very much doubt a $400 or $500 PC would run BF4 nearly as good. In fact, I'm sure it couldn't.

Digital Foundry is up there with Polygon as sites that have functioned like mouthpieces more than actually doing their job. Digital Foundry has gone out of its way to borderline promote the Xbox One over the past several months.

I want to see how this runs on somewhat older PC hardware. Will my 2500k and 680 beat the PS4 version? Seems like they should but you never know

Haha, image and video manipulation by DF?

Cga4zT.gif

Why is the UI scaled up on the Xbox One version?

It's running at a lower resolution, so the UI elements still fill out the same number of pixels on each console, but because there are less pixels in the Xbox One image it appears larger.

I'm by no means a very tech savvy person or someone who notices tiny tiny details..but even I can easily tell the PS4 version is better than the XBone version.

No one in their right minds would say the price doesn't matter. It does and is the biggest advantage the ps4 has. It's the more powerful system which is actually cheaper. But it really has nothing to do with the topic at hand
