Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

Ahh. Wrong system.
I did also find Magic Knight Rayearth with it, so there's that.
Unfortunately, I found Popful a much more enjoyable experience.

What a bizarre Saturn night the last one was.

My Saturn wouldn't start the games.
Lens seemed fine but the motor simply wouldn't began spinning for no apparent reason.
After I've checked the battery to substitute it and failed (BTW I couldn't extract it as shown in many video on YT, not sure if in the japanese model they were fixed more tightly) the motor started spinning again.
What a mystery...

Well spent 3 hours with the new Saturn games (in black & white since the old CRT wouldn't display colors from the Saturn) and I'm satisfied by their qualities.
Nights is charming as ever.
Sega Rally is light on content (I achieved the third checkpoint of the third track at the second try) but handle fabulously.
Magical Hoppers is an average SMB clone but with dynamic camera, it's well done for what Saturn could do in 3D but aged not so good on that front. Mindless fun.
After playing Street Fighter Zero 2 I understand why it is said Saturn pad is a dream for that kind of genre :).
The sharp graphics of Virtua Fighter 2 on the CRT really did standout, animation and attention of detail really show off AM2 skills.
Finally Panzer Dragoon 2 impress for the imaginative world the action is set in.

Tell me more. Double Switch is great, too.
I never played it since my 3DO died the day it came in.
Psychic Detective by EA take the same concept of Night Trap, that is the possibility to change the point of view, and enhance it.
You are a man with psychic power that is asked to investigate on a case by a sexy woman.
During the narration you have brief moment where you can choose to impersonate other characters, thus revealing different piece of the story.
There are a total of 15 different ending that depend on your chosen path.
It is more serious than Nights Trap and with better actors/quality (Night Trap was filmed in the eighties).

Ok, I totally have a story to tell regarding the Saturn's initial presence, in the US anyway. I think this was around the time I started High School and it was Christmas time. At least one store I remember going to, had Saturn front and center on a big projection TV, Sears. Above it was a big Sega logo and sat in front, a bunch of kids sitting around the giant TV in a big pow wow, waiting their turn. And this is immediately in your face as you would come up the escalator from the first floor to the second. Now this is even after the sudden surprise launch fiasco so it seemed Sears at least had confidence in the Sega brand at the time. The game on display? Virtua Fighter! And ONLY Virtua Fighter. And boy was it big and loud. And miles ahead of our puny Genesis as far as advanced 3D graphics! The display, however, did NOT do the game any service despite being big and huge. It was blurry at the wrong angles (as was normal for the tech at the time) and it was not exactly the most colorful game around either.

Did you know what was? Not too far, but further in the back were Playstation displays (I think about 2 or 3 of them) on bright crisp CRT monitors showing a variety of games to play. Even back then, I was thinking to myself, "Is Playstation subtly upstaging Sega here?" Saying that, does anyone have any Saturn launch anecdotes?

Attempting to play Langrisser I & II has been one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I've ever had. It's a fun system and I really enjoyed it for the most part. But in a game where there is no real opportunity to grind, about five battles in, if you haven't accumulated enough experience to class change, and didn't change to the correct class, there's little you can do to overcome the battle.

The game encourages you to run past enemies in the first two levels, allows you to/encourages you to just take out the leaders later on. But this will rob you of precious experience. I restarted my entire game, and played the game gaining more experience, gaining two class changes I hadn't before, and was fairly capable up until two of the boss units where none of my characters could do any damage. With a buff, an overpowered general unit managed to do one point of damage, which would immediately be healed after. This is a battle I restarted once, so would have enough MP to buff my attack to do damage ... which ended up being impossible. I spent at total of 3 hours on this battle.

Experience seems to be more important than anything else in Langrisser. What a disappointing game.

I finished the first game, largely thanks to savestates. I usually went the Fire Emblem route and made sure to keep levels balanced, made sure everyone got a good kill in.

I really enjoyed it. Would I play it again? Uh...
(I was playing Warsong modded to have the JP portraits.)

The SS/PS versions are apparently different from the PC Engine ver., etc. So I'm not sure where Warsong is in terms of game balance. I don't have so much of an issue as making a mistake in battle, as apparently setting myself up for failure later on. I want to play a Saturn game before Chaos Seed arrives though, and ... I'm probably just going to start over on Langrisser. Again.

It's a lot easier for characters to do damage in Fire Emblem ... (It's also a lot easier to die).

I also acquired puyo puyo 2 ... A few "levels" in I can barely control where my puyos go, let along plan some long chain. I didn't expect it to be this difficult (after playing the 15th anniversary edition made by SEGA).

From what I've seen, as is usually the case, Langrisser Genesis/MD had much better music than the remakes.

I found a copy of Earthworm Jim 2 for the Saturn at a local charity shop for 50p! Hooray!

I haven't got a Saturn though. What's my best route for PC emulation?

Anyone tried to use emulation to play Saturn Symphony of the Night?

I have played the PS version so many times and I am looking to mess around with Saturn emulation. My friend had the SotN Saturn version and I always wanted to play though with Maria.

Any problems running this game on the main Saturn emulators?

The PSP version has all that and runs better. As much as I love the Saturn version, I've read the PSP rendered it needless.

SSF, probably.

I should get EWJ2 one of these days, just for the novelty of it.

I ran it in SSF years ago without any problems. Even used it to make this cute sig many years ago.

Is this a SCART cable for an NTSC Saturn? I'm kinda paranoid about the different pins on the Saturn end of the cable between NTSC Saturns and PAL Saturns. Apparently it's a +5v on one and composite sync on the other...

Yes it's for NTSC Saturns. If you want further assurance you can email the site Sega Style. The person who manages the site is knowledgeable with Saturn hardware, this is expected since he also installs modchips.

I read somewhere that SSF actually fixes a lot of the performance issues the game suffers from when running on original Saturn hardware.

And the Saturn version of Maria is pretty awesome, if a bit OP. Completely different than her PSP counterpart.

This thread is such a nice way to take a break from all the crazy shit happening with these Xbox One/PS4 rumor threads. Everyone in here is so chill.

Yesterday was fun, I was with two friend and then I asked if they wanted to play the very first Road & Track:Need for Speed, since they are car enthusiast, which I am not, they said yes instantly.

We did versus for like 2 hours, fun times, I didn't know NFS was so fun (I had the copy since a few months but never gave it a descent spin, shame on me). Though it seems to have some kind of Mario Kart rubber band mechanics because sometimes I was clearly less speedy than my opponent and I was catching up, though it's good for competition and trash talk when the cars collide!!

Then we played Daytona USA for an hour as well. :)

Actually the very first was the 3DO version that from what I understand played more as a racing sim while the Saturn/PS1 ports were more arcadey...

Maybe someone should post it to the Upscaler & RGB thread since quite a few people there were looking for NTSC compatible Saturn RGB cables.
On that note, something from retro_console_accessories:

retro_console_accessories said:
I have now ordered some saturn plugs, but they might not be here til early November as they are coming in from Europe. So I will be adding Saturn scarts in the near future.
Not to stop you from getting a SCART cable from that guy. I bought my AR4-in-1 from him, he's legit.

Thanks for the link for the RGB cable! Just ordered one.

Me too! I'm glad I didn't order from UK sellers. This cable is cheaper, and I'm more confident it won't melt my Saturn. :p

I might be back for that universal mod chip too. I got a mod chip for the Saturn but it requires some fine soldering and cutting because I ad the misfortune of having a model 2 with a 64 pin IC. I never knew there was a plug and play solution for my particular Saturn.

aw shit, EWJ2 doesn't work on the emulator. It crashes when the first stage title screen loads.

Ah well. I'll hang on to it until I get a cheap PAL saturn.

That turned out to be a hell of a lot more one sided than I'd like. :( It's SEGA's red wedding in there.

I guess that explains why common SNES games are priced so high though. You got games that are as common as rocks going for 20-30 bucks on SNES.

Aaaaand just bought Quake for no real reason other than I'd put in an eBay Saved Search years ago and got tired of it nagging me.

$20.51 ($17.59 + $2.92 S&H) isn't too bad.

Just a lot of Nintendo fanboys; not surprising given that the NES was the first real taste of console gaming in the US. I wouldn't take that thread as any indication of superiority. There's a reason the US was split 50/50 in that war - they are systems that cater to different tastes - the Genny for shmups, action, sports, etc. and the SNES for role playing, action/adventure, etc.

^see that's a weird take for me, talking with a friend/local gaffer tonight who pointed out how the genny was an action box...run-n-gun, beat-em-ups, fighters, SHMUPs, just ninjas and bullets everywhere

it's on my list too, isn't there a Saturn exclusive stage?

4 exclusive levels, actually.
And one of them is basically the Quake version of the Ewok village, taking place around and inside various trees, connected by several bridges and floating platforms. Probably one of the most inspired Quake stages I've ever seen.

Another one's a coliseum where you pit two of the game's monsters against one another - a pre-determined one vs. one of your choosing. I think you have to finish the monster that wins off, though. Kind of lame, actually, but eh.

On the downside, these additional stages replace the existing secret stages in the PC version. I can understand "Ziggurat Vertigo", since that stage was open as hell (and the low gravity could be kind of annoying at times), but not so sure about the other three.

And if you've got a Quake save on your Saturn, it unlocks Deathtank Zwei in Duke Nukem 3D for lots of multiplayer fun.
Another reason why I'm going ahead with this one before Duke 3D. Not like I have any IRL friends to play DTZ with, though :\

ah, you said genny for action as well, just saw the SNES one, my bad...i guess i was speaking more to the poll thread.

Just scanned that thread. Why are you even wasting your time? When you have retards that think Axelay is a good shmup or that the SNES had the superior shmups, it's time to get out before you get infected with the dumb.

Thanks to everyone that encouraged me to go for SOTN emulation.

I had never tried emulation for Saturn before, but SSF works great. Took me a while to figure it out, i wasnt able to virtual mount the image so that SSF recognized the virtual drive so I just burned the image on a CDR and it worked fine. Plays and looks pretty good.
