Quick question on the hard drives. Does no thicker than 9.5mm mean it can fit desktop drives? That doesn't exactly tell me whether it can take a 3.5 inch drive. I'm going to shop for new storage as soon as I can confirm which type to get.

So far I have

Sata II @ 3.0 GB, 5400 RPM, 9.5mm, Capacity more than 160GB, and Length ???

It sounds like even if you were sticking to all digital those mandatory installs are going to compel you to a larger storage solution sooner or later.

Lack of external storage support kind of blows but it is one less box under my entertainment center so that's good.

You need a 2.5" drive, not a desktop drive. The biggest you can currently get is 1.5TB at 9.5mm height.

If I rent a game disc, and then decide I want to buy it digitally, can I use the mandatory install to avoid downloading it and just activate my license?
No, in this example you would have to delete the disc install data and fully install the digital version of the game.

Jesus Christ, this is shitty and completely inexcusable tbh. Can't even play MP3's, no DLNA, I guess it really is the "gamer's console", but at the cost of all these features?

Thank you I appreciate it! I was going to nab an SSD but with the cost being so high I am going to settle for a hybrid 1.5TB SSHD. Slightly higher than what I have in my PS3 now.

So let me get this straight,

No MP3 playback
No music CD playback
No video file playback
No custom backgrounds
No custom themes
No streaming from my PC or NAS

This is f'ing ridiculous considering its 2013 and all these features are present in the PS3. I think its great that Sony wants to focus on games but don't neuter the system to do so.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I find it odd they just said No to a bunch of these things and not "planned for later" or something along those lines. Also, I understand software development time etc, but it's not like they just decided to make this console, they have been working on it for years.

I've heard Shu mention monetization being a stumbling block to YouTube. Not sure what he meant by that however; Sony wanting to monetize it for themselves or allowing the gamers to do so

I need more than that. I'm willing to wait before I buy. Not that I need DLNA...but I need some kind of server support. All this is making me do is cancel my preorder and consider building a living room pc with the saved cash.

is no blu-ray movie playback "without an update" really a bullet point for your list? nearly all of the other features you mentioned were ADDED IN AN UPDATE on the PS3, and were not announced beforehand

Even if these services aren't supported by the OS there's nothing to stop Sony or another party to release an app ala Netflix that can handle DLNA support (crosses fingers)

DietRob

i've been begging for over 5 years.
Welp, I did my part and tweeted @yosp and @amboyes earlier. I guess I'll take what I can get. At least they are well aware of the concern.

There is no way around it - it's ridiculous. If Microsoft did this, NeoGAF would explode.

No console for me now.

Yeah but that means you will need to cache it every time you play. It's basically like 50GB reserved for the game you are currently playing. Depending on how much needs to be cached before you can play it can be pretty bugging.

It probably has a predetermined amount set aside for the cache, and when you exceed that amount older stuff gets dumped. The 360 is kind of like this.

Ah good, I am glad you are reading the thread. You can find out for yourself from the posts within it.

Your first post in this thread was in response to a post that said people were misinterpreting an answer that was addressing running games off of external drives.

So since IGN is saying you can't use a USB drive to copy saves and I don't see it anywhere on the FAQ, is this confirmed or it's just another case of Mitch Dyer being Mitch Dyer?

You're right, I edited that one out.

But seriously, you can't justify the others by stating "they were an update on PS3". These things have become standard on consoles over the past 5-6 years and they should be included at launch.

No console for me now.

I still have my PS4 on order but it looks like I'll be holding onto my PS3 for much longer now.

Maybe these features are in the works, and if so, why not tell us that in the FAQ?

Wow...is this true? No video playback and no mp3 playback?

I might not be picking up a ps4 then

THIS

Will PS4 support media servers or DLNA support in order to stream videos or movies from a home PC?
The PS4 system does not support client functionality for media servers.

is bullshit. Hell the Ps3 can do this, why does the ps4 not support this?

Cost cutting messures?

Can it read Divx/xvids over USB?

We don't have confirmation on that or .aac audio files.

I think a fair amount of the software based stuff will come one time. I think they are looking at it this way: at launch, when the spotlight is on and hardware reviews are coming, smooth functionality for a somewhat limited feature set is better than a broader feature set with lots of jank.

I'm most disappointed we don't see legacy support for PS1 and PS2 games. I hope this will come eventually, too. And I'm not talking about Gaikai. I am highly skeptical of that.

Weird to completely shut down the device as a media player, it was always one of the coolest things with the PS3 :(
That's the real problem here I think. They're probably not pissing off all that many 360 fans who choose PS4 this gen because of price/180/specs/etc, they're pissing off their own true fans instead who loved PS3 because of media capabilities and free online etc.

"If MS did this, NeoGAF would explode"? Like, say, a 38 page thread in a matter of hours? Of all the threads somebody has persecution complex on. LOL.

They can't just copy-paste the DLNA code from the PS3 OS, it requires actual effort on the part of the programmers, effort that they'd rather focus on features that are more relevant to gaming.

Software development is all about triage.

Show me where it says no video file playback.

Well with no server support or external hard drive support its hard to get the files into it.

You can use USB flash drives. And they said you couldn't store things on an external drive. That doesn't mean you can't view videos from it.

So I can't use my New Pulse Elite HS (yet) on my PS4 :(
I just hope Remote Play is the real deal!!!!
The mp3 is not a problem 4me!
PlayStation 4life!!! :)

That actually makes me less confident in seeing these features any time soon.
This. Would have hoped that they had a full featured DLNA support et media player capability. That is so depressing. How do they fuck so badely ? Evryhthing was looking nice but they had to screw it up. No DLNA support means ps3 stays in the living room.

Can you just stream to twitch and export that footage/edit to youtube?

I would think so. This is what I plan on doing. You can have twitch automatically store your streams, so then you can get download the saved streams, and upload them to youtube. Not the most elegant way, but it should work.

Too bad we can't commentate over our videos after the fact on PS4. We can do live commentating, but no adding recording afterwards.

Just read the FAQ, what the fuck!?

seeing as we're going to be waiting a while for MP3 support I'll need to find an alternative way to play my music when playing games. anyone have a good suggestion? I normally use my ipod to stream music to the Xbox so I guess I'll need to use some sort of pass-through with my amplifier/TV

If a flash drive can work, an external hard drive can work. I think Sony means you can't run or install games on an external hard drive.

Yes, but they also state that you can't copy recorded gameplay videos to an external HDD (but it's coming). I guess it's possible they only have implemented read access for media files and no write access, but that's kinda weird?
Also, before we know the supported video formats (and the functions of the media player) we don't know if it even matters, as the PS4 as a media device could be even more crippled...

Can users copy the recorded gameplay video from PS4 to other devices, such as PC?
PS4 users will not be able to directly copy recorded gameplay video files from PS4 to other devices, though they will be able to use the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s Share button to upload videos to Facebook for distribution. This function will be supported by a future system update.

From all of these... that is the one that I most didnt like. =(
But... when they say "This function will be supported by a future system update", they mean the share function (like add other places to share it) or they mean the function to copy the gameplay to other devices?

Am I the only one finding the irony that the games first focused system that was praised upon is getting complaints about its media functionality now?

facebook uploading is how I read it.

Not really. Devices need to do more than ever and when one fails to provide even the most basic of features like MP3 playback, it's going to cause some waves...
