Are they fucking serious? This would be great proof to show that the latest OS can run on 2 year old devices and they ditch it?

Androidpolice has a much better explanation.

AndroidPolice said:
Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case, though it's understandable, considering the company that made the chipset for the device has since gotten out of the mobile business, Samsung seems pretty much out as a Nexus partner, and the phones themselves are getting pretty long in the tooth.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/10/31/android-4-4-will-come-to-nexus-4-7-2012-and-2013-10-and-google-play-edition-gs4-htc-one-but-not-galaxy-nexus/

They probably did not want to have to deal with the support nightmare of drivers for a chipset where the original manufacturer is no longer in business.

My Galaxy Nexus am cry.

Watch as there is an outcry and they change their mind.

@Note2 Q - 2015 :p - latter half of 2014 knowing Samsung.

Sucks about the GNex, though I can't say I'm surprised. My Nexus S got the boot on the last update (Jelly bean or whatever it was).

Sounds like the GNex has a lot going against it. There's always Cyanogenmod.

Yup I'm finally going to have to root and install cyanogenmod because of this. Le sigh. I'm still going to hold out next year for phones with 64 bit CPUs and nano sims. I just hope they don't get any bigger. Hoping to see exciting things for Nexus 2014, Google. Don't disappoint me.

Been digging around and noticed a few things for devices upgrading to 4.4 that's not a Nexus 5.

These features are only available on Nexus 5:
You don’t need to touch the screen to get things done. When on your home screen*
Full-screen wallpapers with preview

Your wallpaper now extends through the notification tray and system buttons. And when you change your wallpaper, you can preview just how it will look before you set it.
HDR+ photography

HDR+ mode on Nexus 5 automatically snaps a rapid burst of photos and combines them to give you the best possible single shot. Daytime pictures are vivid with clean shadows, and nighttime photos are sharp with less noise.
Low-power audio playback

Android 4.4 on Nexus 5 lets you listen to music for longer - up to 60 hours of audio playback.

From here:
http://www.android.com/versions/kit-kat-4-4/

Look at the stuff that has an asterisk beside it

Hope the image is posted for the Nexus 7 2013 so I can update it manually instead of waiting for the OTA. Nexus 5 better ship tonight!

SMS into hangouts? So they have finally found a way to force hangouts/g+ on everyone... I don't like that at all. Also: the phone is always listening to what you say, but seems to be only on the Nexus 5, for now? Don't like this either...

Will wait for custom roms with old SMS app etc.

yikes, dumb. could you imagine if updates didnt come out for your 2 year old computer?

My current phone/carrier combo had the phone launch and no updates after that. Thankfully, I could flash a more modern version of Android on it after jumping through hoops.

Stock SMS application sucks, I use sliding messaging pro because it can read text MMS. It's surprising how the lack of this can bite you in the ass when you got buddies with iOS/dumbphones that can see it fine but you got nope.jpg

512MB RAM.

Goddamn Googy! That's like the opposite of what Apple does with their updates (rendering old hardware almost unusable ).

This should make those still on the Galaxy Nexus (GSM) very happy.

This would only benefit newer phones or older former high-end phones, most newer low end devices are usually locked down and have less support from modders. My phone is fine with 768 MB on 4.2.something.

I feel bad for me and the rest of the Galaxy users on Verizon. Stuck on 4.1...

Third party ROMs >:3

Wonder how long before my N7 gets the update.

Opposite indeed.

I think the reason is because the when the Galaxy Nexus initially launched it was very underpowered. The whole SoC on the Galaxy Nexus was pretty pathetic to be honest. (I still love mine though)

The T.I OMAP CPU was pretty shitty for a CPU at the time and SGX 540 was the same GPU that was in the..... first Samsung Galaxy phone. But man this is so disappointing.

Cyanogenmod save us all.

What's the point of beating ur chest about lower memory footprint if ur not even gonna support devices like the galaxy nexus with low ram

My galaxy nexus will have to go to those cyanogen nao

Hmmm. The Android.com page lists Chromecast support as a feature (second one after you hit the "more features" link, but still only lists the same 4 apps that already had Chromecast support. They don't even mention Pandora.

I was hoping they'd use introducing 4.4 to officially open up the SDK (and maybe add device mirroring), but it looks like that's not happening.

as the owner of a Galaxy S3 (international) I guess I'll have to wait for CyanogenMod or whatever. I don't think I want 4.4 with Touchwiz.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face

Yeah what the fuck is going on? Are us S3 owners going to get any updates? I thought we were supposed to get 4.3 like 2 months ago at one point, and now 4.4 is coming out.

Aew 3rd party roms generally stable?

Most of the 3rd party deals are actually really stable I hear.

I just can't get any of them to work...

Hmmmmmm. To upgrade to a Nexus 5 or just wait for cyanogenmod for my Galaxy Nexus... Tempted to get the new shiny thing but I feel like I shouldn't be so willing to throw down a few hundred dollars every couple of years for something I don't really need. Only real complaints I have about the GN are the low volume of the speaker and the amount of RAM, but 4.4 would help with the latter.

Kitkat for Nexus 4 incoming?

Running off of Custom Firmware
Greatly looking forward to this whenever it gets ported to the SGS4 Carbon ROM nightlies.

Does this mean that new low/mid android phones will be able to play apps like Clash of Clans? That would be pretty welcome new for developers, if so. Google also needs to tackle security and piracy because AFAIK, pirating an android app is as easy as downloading the apk from a random site.

Me too. Second screen/mirroring gaming, as well as casting your photos/videos from your phone is needed. I know the device is just a few months old, but they need to officially launch that SDK already. I read that a lot of apps are pretty much ready on chromecast, but google is holding on to releasing them for some odd reason.

Quoting from the Android community thread, because I'm still annoyed by Google's lack of support for the Galaxy Nexus:

So by Google's logic, this will be the last update the 2012 Nexus 7 will probably get. Unless 4.5 or 5.0 gets released before February.

It's fucking stupid. Yeah, I know I can wait for CM to release a version, but that's not the point. It's about Google sending a message that they don't really give a shit. The chipmaker that make's the SOC went out of business and it would be hard to update drivers for it? Google is a multi-billion dollar corporation. They could make it work if they wanted to.

But they don't want to.

Those customers that, instead of purchasing better, more powerful Android phones, chose yours because it was the Google phone. Those loyal customers that dealt with battery issues, and a worse camera, because they wanted your phone. The phone that you were still selling one year ago.

Nope. Were not supporting you anymore. Buy our new phone.

No thanks, Google.

I actually have an app that I've written where I have Chromecast support working pretty much completely, and it only took me about 2 weeks. But I can't release the update because it won't work anywhere besides my testing environment. So I can easily believe that.

OK seeing as how Verizon has yet to go beyond 4.2.2, I'm finally interested in possibly rooting and get 4.4 on my GNex. What's the easiest way to go about this?

For the GalNex, would it not be a simple task to pull the old AOSP code and simply recompile for 4.4? It'll be missing all of the GApps, but it should work, right?

What makes this sting is that my gnex is running into memory problems with 4.3 and that's the exact issue that 4.4 would technically solve.... Guess I'll wait for rom
