Media Create Sales: Week 44, 2013 (Oct 28 - Nov 03)

All those bundles are targeted at the casual audience, people are not rushing to buy Wii Party. I think Wii U will sell more than 20k next week.

Said the same thing in another board, family titles are less frontloaded so it's possible it also helps to - relatively - sustain the sales pass the release week. We'll see.

Are you so sure about it?
I'm honestly curious.
Btw, will the 3DS 2013 be higher or not compared to the 3DS 2012?
HEAD TO HEAD, that's less depressing than the VitaTV VS Wii U race, imho :p

It will definitely fall again behind last year YTD starting with week 46.

We will see how well it will do in Dec though.

I said it earlier in the thread, but why are people assuming it's a lot of the casual audience coming out to buy these bundles? It seems from the stats not many people were interested in basic at all, so if you are going to get a deluxe there really is no reason not to get the system with the game most people buy the system for anyway (NSMBU) and you get some other games too. These bundles pretty much make the normal basic obsolete.

It's nice to see all 3 new consoles doing well in Japan! Both the Wii U AND Vita are over 20k =).

I'm actually quite impressed that the Wii U hit 38k. I'm pretty happy with the results. Let's see whether it holds in later weeks.

Hold on there Wii U, you still have a lot of life in you still. SM3DW will give you another good jolt and hopefully you can breathe on your own.

Hugs Wii U.

It doesn't work that way. It didn't work for the Gamecube why it would it work here. You need a steady flow of releases and to cover as many bases/genre's with said releases as possible. How does one do this: third party support.

And how are you suppose to get third party support? By selling consoles. I am not saying it will sell gangbusters but if it can stay above 40K then it will have a great chance to do more. Slipping below 3k was horrible. Right now it has to start with first party then move to third. It can't start with third party because the sales arent there.

Nah, you get third party support by being amenable to third parties. Sales ain't shit.

As a Vita lover, thank fuck that's the case.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Um, its not going to stay over 40k, thats not how this works either. The pent up demand for the new model or bundle or colour or pricedrop spikes the sales, and then it goes down afterwards. Its if it can keep CLOSER to that peak determines if a lasting effect has taken place or not.

Thats the problem really. 40k is okay/good, but its not good if that spike has to make up for more and more truly terrible months of sales.

Don't call it a comeback ... cause it's not.

If PADZ does well does that mean we'll get a Kantai Collection port/dating sim spinoff on the 3DS at some point

Vita's getting that.

What are you talking about? Nintendo has been very responsive to suggestions. Many indie devs and even big devs said so. Yes Nintendo puts their foot down if it contradicts their core focus but that is every company.

I'm talking about the fact that sales don't equal support.

Pokemon X is now at #20 of the eShop all time charts, excluding VC and DSi titles.

For some reason Nintendo stopped giving weekly charts on 3DS eShop.

KI:U is at #1 of the recent charts. I'm guessing many people are now up to their second or third free game and KI:U just wasn't their first choice. That would probably have been Mario Tennis Open and Zelda 3D which previously were the top downloaded games.

guess the bundles did it's job, stupid party game

I usually don't like party games but I got Wii U Party on sale and it came with a free controller. It is actually a pretty damn fun game.

Thought I would hate it but was pleasantly surprised.

They do some cool stuff with the game pad.

Tabletop games are fun (like baseball foosball)

Games like Name that Face are a blast. (Players are instructed to make a certain face and the others have to pick from multiple choice options to guess what face the other person is making.) Lots of fun stuff.

The thing in my opinion is that driving hardware sales with their own games is generally seen as pointless because that's not guaranteeing that non-Nintendo games would sell, but I only agree with that sentiment up to a point. I think what driving hardware sales with your own games does that's positive for everyone is it makes/keeps your user base active.

We've talked recently about how it's not enough for people to OWN the system, they need to actively want to buy games for it. The Wii U user base hasn't been active this year. But if Nintendo can motivate people to go to the store and grab some games every once in a while, at some point Wii U owners will buy more.

This is the same situation with me for the Vita, except the opposite way. What motivated me to get the system was Wipeout and ModNation Racers, and after that, I bought more games because I wanted to use the device, to see what was out there. Then when Sony's exclusive first-party support dried up, I just stopped buying games for the Vita because just having two somewhat interesting games in one year wasn't convincing enough to get me to buy games for it when I could buy games for other devices that I use much more.

That's why I think if Nintendo can keep a decent release pace of widely-appealing exclusive titles, it'll make owners more active. They'll want to use the Wii U more and naturally buy games they wouldn't necessarily have bought otherwise. I didn't buy the Vita to play Gravity Rush, but the fact that I had the device and had been buying a few games already made me want to explore more, instead of being passive like I am now, waiting for really strong reasons to get me to spend my money.

So anyway, my point is I'm more optimistic than some that the third-party situation in Japan will improve after some time if Nintendo manages their current strategy right. To give a more specific time-frame, I expect next year at this time to be more promising on that front than what we're seeing now.

01./01. [3DS] Pokemon X / Y # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2013.10.12} (¥4.800) - 137.720 / 3.090.779 <80-100%> (-48%)

Surprising low 4th week for Pokémon X / Y. It is below every main Pokémon title with the exception of Pokémon Black 2 / White 2 (113.901) and evidently Pokémon Red / Green / Blue. On the contrary, total sales number is over 3 million units, only Pokémon Black / White sold more during the same time frame. Game over? It did even worse than the first (59.448) and the second (55.614) re-release of Little Battlers eXperience. And to think that just a year ago things looked so bright for Level 5 when Little Battlers eXperience Explosive Boost was released for 3DS.

03./03. [PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2013 <SPT> (Konami) {2013.10.24} (¥3.980) - 60.157 / 144.260 <80-100%> (-28%)

This title is the winner of this week, what an impressive second week hold!

For example, the PS3 and PS Vita versions of Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2013 have already outsold their previous entry. The cheaper price probably helped a lot, and maybe the release date (October instead of July)? I don't know, I'm not into Baseball.

Second week for 2013 edition vs lifetime sales for 2012 edition:

[PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2013 (Konami) {2013.10.24} - 60.157 / 144.260
[PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2012 (Konami) {2012.07.19} - 134.431

Monster Hunter 4 is still unable to shorten the gap with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, maybe next week?

Another great hold. Grand Theft Auto V was expected to be big, but not that big. Usually a title like this would be more front-loaded. This game is having strong legs in addition with a very high first week sales.

I'm a couple of pages into this thread. A couple of points: 3DS also has sequels to the 200,000+ Kobito Zukan (probably messed up the spelling) and the 150,000+ Aikatsu.

Monster Hunter 4 has sold over 475,000 digital, Pokémon digital sales unknown but far, far less.

That's doubtful.
Download cards for Pokemon have sold much more than Monster Hunter.

It looks to be about 300,000 vs Monster Hunter's 200,000.
Of course we don't know eShop sales, but I doubt it's lower overall.

Where are you getting your figures from? Pokemon's opening week sales for download cards was about ~55k. MH4 was around ~150k. Pokemon didn't have the stock issues MH4 had so it's very doubtful that Pokemon digital sales would be more than MH4.

Okay. Gibbo is wrong and the All Bestsellers chart is wrong.

I'm basing it off of Famitsu vs Media Create.

Doesn't the eShop chart separate the 2 versions?

Right, I said that we don't know eShop sales, but given that download card sales (based on Famitsu) are higher for Pokemon, it's hard to say that it's "far, far less".
Unless the 450,000 for Monster Hunter didn't include card sales at all.

Pokemon should maintain 80-100k going forward through the holiday season. Shipments should comfortably sit at 4 million by year-end. Very good results but a decline nonetheless.

What were Pokémon Ruby LTD in Japan? Should one expect X and Y to reach that tier?

I meant relatively =P. At least they're both over 20k in the same week, which is definitely a start. Also the Vita has stayed in the 25k range for 3 weeks surprisingly now. Let's see how long it can hold that.

Why that 11th week in MHP3 sold a lot more? Golden Week?

That and it was the week, I think, that the two bundles were released (the initial bundle didn't contain the game iirc).

Yes, you are right. I forgot about those.

Nintendo/Capcom are doing exactly the same thing this time with MH4

I guess we can expect the bargain edition in June/July

Pokemon should maintain 80-100k going forward through the holiday season. Shipments should comfortably sit at 4 million by year-end. Very good results but a decline nonetheless.

What were Pokémon Ruby LTD in Japan? Should one expect X and Y to reach that tier?

[GBA] Pokémon Ruby / Sapphire (Nintendo) {2002.11.21} - 1.245.003 / 5.337.045

So far, every main Pokémon title has been able to cross the 5 million mark. Pokémon Black 2 / White 2 (for obvious reasons) is the exception. I'm sure Pokémon X / Y won't fail to reach that tier.

come next January, I think WiiU will be again 8k~10k until something else happens

I think so too, but at least these numbers suggest that the holiday season isn't going to be quite as disastrous as the rest of the year has been, and if the bundle has legs, than an actual price drop will do pretty well.

I guess I'll have to take Wii U off the "worse than Dreamcast" watch. It got 37,089 units away from dropping below the Dreamcast launch aligned, but it looks like that will probably be the closest it ever gets. I'd like to track it with Gamecube, but even after this week it's still 368k units behind so it could take a long long time to catch up there.

For those that care, the first week for Neptunia games:

[PS3] Hyperdimension Neptunia - 22.574
[PS3] Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 - 32.751
[PS3] Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory - 36.189
[PSV] Kami Jigen Idol Neptune PP - 29.933
[PSV] Chou Tsugitsugimono Game Neptune Re:Birth1- 31.811

The new Vita game is a remake of the first.

Sry for quoting myself but....

I'm pretty sure that this time last year Vita still had better third party support than Wii U does.
