DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

I don't get why people are bothered by this.

They have machines that mimic years of abuse in a very short amount of time and I'm pretty sure they would have picked up on rubber wearing out quickly.

Scuff marks and manky controller I call shenanigans.

Yeah those tests look super reliable. I'm sure all the RROD'd 360s on the market passed some kind of stress test back in the day too, as well as YLOD'd PS3s and Wiis with fried gpus due to heat on standby mode.

It's probably an issue of skin oil chemistry.

Some guitar players can wear out a new set of guitar strings very quickly, when those same strings can last weeks of heavy use with other players.

The material used in DS4 sticks is probably a similar deal.

For the record, I had a DS3 right stick issue where the lip on the right stick would come up. Other than that, all 5 of my controllers over the years have been fine. People have had these controllers for such little time so it's odd for this much "wear" to be seen.

Looks like sandpaper scratches in the middle of the stick, don't you think?

Yeah, it looks almost as if he has keyed the stick. Definitely not tiny fingertips that have caused the scratches there.

However, hearing of it from the Offical PS Mag is somewhat disturbing. Then again, how many controllers have been sold so far? Never mind the fact that the Reddit poster obviously did his best to scratch it, how many others have we heard of? I would be extremely pissed if my controller breaks directly. And no, I don't care if my 360 RROD'd while discussion this - I still want a working PS4 controller.

The DS4 I've been using for a while still has that "rubbery" stick cover thing on it - the picture looks like it's been hit with a dremel. This happening to anybody else?

Give me a break, this is fake.

Thread: "DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem if you press a belt sander with 200 grit paper against them"

I mean really, who is the bozo who spend $60 bucks on something, only to intentionally damage it, so that they can attempt a slander campaign against a console...

It depends on how you use the controller. I generaly play a lot more often video games than my friends and my controller never had issues aside from jamming buttons. One of my friends always had broken controllers and it was always the analog sticks. On PS2 the rubber was spinning on the plastic stick, on PS3 it was missing completely and on 360 it looks like he was using sandpaper. He's just a casual gamer btw, so he wasn't using it more often but he was obviously doing something wrong.

I don't think we have reason to doubt the person who made that post on reddit. I can imagine how you use it has an effect but he only had it for one week. Think of all the rare intense moments in games where you might grip harder than intended. What I'm wondering is if it's something you could cleanly remove and replace

This is foreshadowing.

On november 15th there will be 3 people on the internet with borked systems, they will get 100 page threads and coverage in every major media outlet. The same thing will happen Nov 22.

On topic, I've used my DS4 daily for PC games and it's in perfect condition. But I also don't attach razors to my thumbs when I play like I think that dude on reddit does.

You're not concerned by the video at all? That's more concerning to me, it's at the 5:50ish mark

Thanks for the update.

If this does become a widespread problem, how difficult would it be to fix? Some third party could jump up and create little rubberized caps or something as a short-term replacement, right? That probably wouldn't be so bad until Sony fixed the issue in the actual controllers.

Yeah I don't think it'd be too bad. Obviously it would suck, but it would still be functional.

Looks like the kind of person who has longer thumb nails and digs their thumb into the stick when they play. Used to have a roommate who did it and it wasn't uncommon to see that kind of damage on our 360 controllers.

Does anyone else notice that you can actually see the texturing on the right stick, but its nowhere to be found on the left? How does that wear down that much in 2 weeks? I call foul play of some sort...

I don't even understand why we need accounts from some poster online, when the controller is in the hands of dozens of hardcore gamers right in this very forum.

Mine's in pristine condition. Then again, I don't invite thousands of people to muck around with my controller, and I don't deliberately gouge it with sharp things.

I've been playing with one for two weeks as my main controller and have had no issues so far.

I am probably going to swap my sticks for metal ones though because no matter what, this WILL happen eventually. It happened to my 360 sticks as well after years of use.

That wear pattern makes no sense. Way too clean cut and consistent, looks like it was cut with a razor blade.

This. I can understand maybe some wear of the actual gripping due to either food debris, oily skin or just plain ol' fashion long time use/wear and tear, but the actual cut looks just like that....as if it were cut. Looks like a clean cut.

He said he was playing FIFA 11 on PC. I'd guess it doesn't require a lot of right stick use

Or it is soft and was pinched and folded from pushing too hard.

Your post=so irrelevant.

Almost 20 years in the industry and to think Sony NOW has thumb stick issues? I believe this is just an isolated case.

Hell, I don't really take that good care of my controllers but I don't think I could ever get mine in that condition in such a short amount of time

I know a few people who rips the 360 joysticks apart because they actually use their fingernails on the thumbsticks.

Maybe he's one of those people.

Yeah and you can see scratches on the left stick. There was more than just a thumb on it. Plus, what a nasty looking controller for only being out for a week or two. All greasy and shit all over it. Gross. I hope most people don't take care of their stuff the way that guy does.

This. Best post of the thread on reddit catches him.

I can't think this is gonna be an issue- but yall are focusing on the one Reddit poster, where the real info source in this thread is the video.

This isn't particualrly rare

A lot of the guys I know who had 360's, their analog sticks were worn down to the point where you could see the plastic through it. The same happened to me with the original Xbox controller.

One thing I liked about the Dualshock was that the sticks themselves were pretty resilient. Something about the shape and texture made it hard to reall wear them down. That said I left one too near a window one summer and the sunlight melted plastic. That was years ago and for whatever reason, that analog stick is still sticky to touch like it never congealed. Wierd.

One thing I saw that I'm sure Microsoft didn't mention in their run through of the 6 million changes they''ve made to their pad was the texture and shape of the of the analog sticks. The indent looks really quite resilient, not sure about the rubber on the edge however.

This is just what happens when you secrete acid. The controllers were only tested for human use.

I'd be stunned if this was an issue. However, it wouldn't be the first time a product suffered from issues due to defective components. A bad batch of rubber or whatever they use on the nubs could cause this in a large number of units without all of them suffering from the issue.

That would give a tear, not a level plane of removed rubber. That's why I asked for *lower* camera angles specifically.

...thats why i don´t buy used Tech stuff. :(
I did this with my launch PS2. It stopped playing PS1 and DVDs and was hit or miss with PS2 games. I took it to Gamestop, the guy booted it up, shut it off and gave me my money.

Don't worry, that was a long time ago and I've paid for that sin ten fold with the 360.

Lol did you even watch it? starts at 5:55, one guy says he experienced this where the others quickly say they haven't even after "30 hours with AC4-" and say must've been the CoD players(lol).

Yup, which is why I said I don't think its gonna be an issue. I just think that its a better starting point for this discussion than a random Reddit post.
