Almost forgot, Steamworld Dig deserves more props.

This game came out of the blue and was far and away my favorite surprise find this year. It's super fun and addictive. Think Dig Dug meets Metroid. Highly recommended.
I am intrigued.

For me the major 3DS releases this year were safe entries into tired franchises that often failed to live up to their predecessors. Only Dark Moon stood out as a title that was ambitious and competently executed upon.

And for me Dark Moon was the only one that couldn't be as good as its predecessor. The. rest if them improved in their franchises like FE:A and Pokemon X/Y

Just got an XL though I'm having a hard time picking out a game.

I'm sort of holding back on experiences I've had before. Can't decide though.
Pokemon X/Y (sort of want to hold off, I've played too many pokemon games)
Mario & Luigi Dream Team
Super Mario 3D Land
Ocarina of Time 3D (never played it)
Fire Emblem: Awakening
EOU/EUIV (4 would be the better one right?)
SMTIV (love persona, characters seem a bit meh in this maybe...?)

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Yeah, 3DS has had a pretty excellent year. Fire Emblem: Awakening was incredible, SMT IV was a great entry in the series, Ace Attorney 5 was excellent, etc. Honestly, I just wish we could get a Metroidvania on there, or some more of the crazy games the original DS had, but apart from that, I really can't ask for much more than we've already gotten.

Cuz yeah... I miss DS Castlevanias :(. Especially Dawn of Sorrow.

We did get a handheld Castlevania this year, it just wasn't good.

Edit: Also, as mentioned, I believe Steamworld Dig is a Metroidvania.

Most of the 3DS titles this year have greatly improved upon their series' formula. Even SMT IV, while the setting or story isn't nearly as good as its predecessors, is far more fun to play than any of them. Same with Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Etrian Odyssey, Harvest Moon, Luigi's Mansion, etc. And from the looks of it, Link Between Worlds is going to be a far better game than any of its handheld predecessors (none of which I liked at all).

I actually didn't like it.

Only Fire Emblem had me interested and that was mostly because it was the closest thing to Advance Wars. The only other game I might pick up this year is Jett Rocket II (if it ever comes out). I also wanted to be excited for Mighty Switch Force 2 but it's too similar to the first game.

All the other games; I wanted a break from Mario, not interested in the top down Zelda, Pokemon X/Y didn't lure me like I thought they did and I could never get into Animal Crossing.

Haven't played Steamworld Dig, myself, but I've heard it's not really a Metroidvania. Or maybe it is, but it's not the same sort of design as you'd find in a Metroid or Castlevania. Pseudo-Metroidvania. God, that term is overused these days.

But yeah, I really need to check it out. I imagine it hasn't been getting all this praise for nothing.

Is it supposed to remain a 3DS exclusive, or is it something that's probably going to show up on Steam at some point?

The devs have talked about a possible Wii U version, so if you're interested in that possibility you might want to wait it out a bit (like I am).

I'd say go for ocarina of time or super Mario 3d land (or get both!) Ocarina is a classic that everyone should play and super Mario 3d land is an amazing platformer that I found insanely fun!

Cool, I might wait a bit then.

But back on topic: Goddamn I'm glad to hear the positive Zelda impressions as of late. Was super-worried about that game, especially coming off of the abysmal DS Zelda games, but it just looks so rad.

Yeah, those are the two I have least reservations about not including the top two which I know what I'm getting.

I find it weird how much the perception of the DS games changed. Both of them got decent reviews. Personally, I didn't think they were that bad, but they weren't 9/10 either.

The reviews were good, but the general public seemed to really hate them (including me). The terrible overworlds, annoying controls and awful central dungeons really hurt the games for a lot of people.

Definitely a great year for the 3ds. I have put so many hours into the handheld. Also the mii plaza games are pretty good mini games. Hopefully next year has some surprises.

yep, the 3DS this year has been easily my most satisfying year for a single console

ive been checking out some of the recent eShop stuff lately, like HarmoKnight and Steamworld Dig, any other suggestions for good under-the-radar releases from 2013?

Steamworld was pretty excellent but a little short, and HarmoKnight was cute and challenging, but the music was slightly underwhelming. my fingers are crossed for a new 3DS Rhythm Heaven for 2014

8 games across an entire year represents an amazing lineup?

What do you call the PS3's year then?

God of War, Last of Us, Bioshock, Puppeteer, Ratchet, Ni no Kuni, Metal Gear Rising, Tales of Xillia, Project Diva, GTAV, Final Fantasy XIV, Dragon's Crown, Saint's Row IV, Diablo 3, The Wolf Among Us, Gran Turismo 6..... and I'm sure I'm missing a ton of other games too.

I swear I hate GAF sometimes. Why does every thread need to be shitted up like this? Why couldn't we have one discussion without the fanboy dick wagging?

This thread is about appreciating what we've had to play on the 3DS, not the PS3.

They were both okay and that's fine. Still compared to Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages/Seasons and Minish Cap it was a step back. Problem is in the gamingworld people can't balance things out. It's either the BEST THING EVER or HOT GARBAGE :p

Because some people, for some insane reason, can't have something positive said about a company/system they don't like. It's crazy.

In the case of the DS Zeldas, it actually was hot garbage. Those controls... nobody could have actually thought that was a good idea.

If the 3DS gets a IGA Castlevania and a 2D Metroid, it will be my favorite system all time hands down.

Nah. I agree the controls weren't everything and personally I really don't like the blowing mechanic in Spirit Tracks, they were okay games. I've played far, FAR worse.

Those people can go post in a thread about their favorite console then, instead of derailing other threads about other consoles.

OT:
Spectacular year. And thanks to Nintendo's promotions I actually bought most of their output this year. "So many games!" was an awesome promotion, just as by extension "Hunt together" and the Animal Crossing promotion.

Just awesome :D

Huh? The controls were perfectly fine. Just like in any other Hack and Slay (Diablo type, not GoW wannabe HnS) or in MMORPG's, just better.

This system definitly had a good year.
Personally i still haven't bought one because i'm pretty much only interested in the two EO and SMT4 but i'll get one later on for sure. Maybe Zelda if it's actually good this time (i won't deny spirit tracks traumatized me).
Woops i forgot MH4 when (if) it get released, i like those type of games.

A little short? I spent eight and a half hours with that game, getting everything. I wouldn't call that a little short.

*cough*

Coming up still:

Yeah true, think I was being too harsh on 3DS then, our harsh-ness should be directed at the Wii U. The 3DS compared to vita its probably still doing better 3rd party-wise. If theres one area Vita should be beating 3DS in, it should be 3rd parties.

Really happy with Nintendo's efforts on 3DS this year though yeah. Lot of games that this year that I consider the best of 3DS, so very good indeed and we still have Zelda to look forward to :D

Hoping 2014 is just as good, if not better, hopefully same for Wii U too.

Out of those in the OP I only got Pokemon X, and I'm not interested in about half of them. Might pick up Mario Party at some point. I'm still catching up on old DS games(never had one before the 3DS), so I'm fine going without some of the more recent games.

I'll have to completely agree. The variety is unfortunately lacking. This marked the year were I played more on my iphone, than any of my handhelds. If I want a proper driving simulator? O look the app store has me covered. An RTS? Also the app store has it, and for a mere 1-5$ bucks. The same goes for sport games, which are sorely lacking on the 3DS. I just can't justify paying $40 dollars when a $2 app gives me the same enjoyment and quality (and sometimes better graphics).

It seems a lot of nintendo fans are so desperate for games that games as lacking as animal crossing and mario and luigi make the cut. I'm not even mentioning how completely disappointing Pokemon Y/X is from a technical standpoint to the core gameplay (Black and White 1 and 2 were superior pokemon games).

I wonder if the 3ds is going to win any " XYZ of the year awards" besides the usual handheld related stuff like "best handheld game".
It should, but I doubt it will

That is some impressive release list, indeed. I own 3 of the games in the OP, and plan to get 3 more someday.

The only thing I regret is not spending more time with the console. I haven't finished a single game yet, and I didn't even start Luigi's Mansion 2.

I've really enjoyed my 3DS this year. Surprised me how many titles I ended up buying for it, but the entertainment factor has dwarfed most other platforms, so it was a purchase well spent. :)

Animal Crossing lacking? lol wtf?

Ace Attorney 5 automatically made it a great lineup. The rest was bonus.

So glad I decided to get a 3DS earlier this year. So many good games.

If you've played any other entry of the series... yeah? AC is an easy contender for the laziest Nintendo series and Eguchi is a fucking hack, not sure what's so absurd about that. Yeah, this is the first time they did some minor changes but at it's core it's still the N64 game.

I've got it for free, because there were too many other titles, so it thankfully isn't enough to devalue the year anyway.

Yep 2013 was definitely a great year for the 3DS. 2014 hopefully gonna be the same with Smash and Bravely Default (for us in NA).

Meh. Lots of those games are cross platform and the first party offerings are... meh.

It was a good year for all consoles but I played more 3ds than PS360

If I wasn't getting a PS4 this year, I probably would've put money down for a 3DS, just to play Bravely Default in December. That game looks so sweet.

It's been an amazing year for it, gamewise! Not too shabby sales-wise either, though there aint no way back to pre-tablet/smartphone days :(
