3DS had an amazing 2013

Vanillalite

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
8 games across an entire year represents an amazing lineup?

What do you call the PS3's year then?

God of War, Last of Us, Bioshock, Puppeteer, Ratchet, Ni no Kuni, Metal Gear Rising, Tales of Xillia, Project Diva, GTAV, Final Fantasy XIV, Dragon's Crown, Saint's Row IV, Diablo 3, The Wolf Among Us, Gran Turismo 6..... and I'm sure I'm missing a ton of other games too.

That list above is only 1st party, and not 3rd party.

Smash Bros will be enough for alone next year! But I'm sure there'll be a few more first-party surprises.

I would agree but since it's coming for Wii U too in a more glorious form I need something else. Metroid Dread or
/and
Advance Wards 3DS will satisfy me.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
If Kid Icarus can get me through the barren wasteland that was 2012, so can SSB! In Sakurai I trust.

Hmm... well, I'm at least curious about Smash... but have they said anything as far as how the gameplay will compare to the WiiU game? I just can't shake the feeling that it's nothing more than a downgraded port.

We've got like 20 seconds of footage to go off, but it looks like one of the most graphically intensive games on the system. With the outlines, many have said it even looks superior to the Wii U version, stylistically.

Me neither but I don't think gameplay will necessarily fall short of the Wii U version. It's just everything else that potentially could. There's just such a huge gap between 3DS and Wii U.

Wii U has a respectable year

Hell no. Worst Nintendo home console year since Wii Music christmas and obviously a complete joke compared to the 3DS. No 3rd party exclusives (and even the multiplats are hardly coming) and the 1st party efforts are few and mostly don't justify the consoles price tag through their obviously little production values and lack of new concepts.
Next year might be less of a disaster, depending on how bad the next batch of delays is gonna be. Though 3DS still lookin better, because of 3rd party localisations that are still due.

Go ahead and completely ignore Sonic and MH3. You certainly don't shy away from hyperbolic statements these days.

That's a first party title.

Besides what the hell even is a 3rd party exclusive in 2013. I just can't see them happening if the platform owner doesn't pay for them (like happened with Lego City Undercover, Sonic Lost World was published by Nintendo in Europe, Mario & Sonic at Olympics was published by Nintendo, is co-owned by Nintendo and includes Nintendo IP's). At least not anything that really matters.

Agreed, between 3DS and Vita it's a great time to be a portable gamer. Lots of great releases this year with some more great titles set for 2014, hopefully Capcom is considering a Monster Hunter 4 release for western markets, I want more action-oriented portable titles.

Hands down 3DS in 2013 was my favorite year for any console ever.

With the games I got in 2013 not only could I have gone without playing a single game on another platform in that year but probably have enough stored up gaming to play through 2014.

I've easily got another 1000 hours for X and have barely scratched the surface on EO 1 remake, RF 4, Luigi's Mansion, Dream Team and I've got Zelda to go. Plus I feel like another Awakening playthrough is in my future not to mention the crap load of eshop titles I've barely even played.

Yeah Vita has been pretty good too. I'm happy that the dedicated handheld games have endured the onslaught of cheaper and free titles from mobile sector.

Also I'm sure that Monster Hunter 4 is coming over.

Two of them are also on 3DS... And the last one is a barebones minigame collection.

Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, Lego City Undercover don't real ;(

Personally I didn't really need portable gaming this year but still I was playing at home which I rarely do. Yep, 3DS has been amazing this year.

This lineup of great RPGs is why I will probably (emphasis on probably and not certainly) purchase one during a black Friday sale. Although I want to go all digital especially because the point of a handheld for me is portability, which means I have to reconcile my opposition to how Nintendo handles almost anything related to account systems. I also need to find a way to get 64gig SD cards to work (I believe you have to format them on your pc with an SD card reader to what the 3ds uses?) if I want to go all digital with my 3DS. I love games that are a bit slower paced that I can sit in bed playing, so the 3DS has a perfect lineup for me. It is very tempting.

My backlog just continues to grow thanks to the 3DS and its amazing selection of games. I'm trying to keep up but as soon as I make it maybe halfway through a game, another one releases. I wouldn't want it any other way :)

Different games.

Monster Hunter is the same. I mean, I've played the WiiU version but in the end I'm not really sure the online mode was worth the 400 bucks.
Sonic might be different, but consensus seems pretty clear that it isn't exactly a good game contributing to a ,,respectable year''. Sure, there will be defenders, I also stood up for Secret Rings back in the day, but it's clear that it just isn't a great title.

Now compare to the 3DS. Or a good Wii year like 2007/10. Admittedly, Lego City I haven't played but it seems pretty cool. But straight after that came another quarter of emtpiness until Pikmin/W101 in summer.(And the former should have been a launch title) Since then, another drought until a half baked Mario comes that pales in comparison to Galaxy.

Pikmin 3, Earthbound, W101, and especially NSLB and WW HD have kept the Wii U whirring strong this year. Also I've played a ton of Tri Ultimate and RE:R since they've gone on sale. I thought 2013 was pretty ok for the Wii U and I don't even like Lego.

That's why you shouldn't buy a console for one game but enjoy all the other quality titles available. Sonic might not be good but it's a completely different game unlike what you claimed. In the end 3rd party exclusives without platform owner playing a part with money are such a rarity I'm not even sure why you bothered bringing it up.

Best handheld ever. Bought mine in march and I didn't expect I'd be getting so many games for it so quickly. Amazing year indeed.

Don't forget Lego City: Undercover and The Wonderful 101!! ;)

Both are funded by Nintendo (not sure about Lego City Undercover actually but since it has not appeared on other platforms I think some money has changed hands) hence not 3rd party but 1st party titles.

This year was pretty incredible in terms of great 3DS games. Fire Emblem is my most played 3DS game so far (though Pokemon Y is catching up), Soul Hackers and SMTIV were both excellent, Project X Zone was addicting and Luigi's Mansion was just a joy to experience. Still playing through Ace Attorney 5, but I love it so far. I can only hope next year will be just as good; Bravely Default will set things up very nicely.

Bought the system this year for SMT4, which delivered on every front. Everything else - Fire Emblem, AA5, etc - is just a bonus.

Beast of a system. It has the GOTY (SMTIV) and a bunch of other excellent games. I wonder if 2014 will be as good. If so, goddamn...

But they were made in studios that aren't owned by Nintendo. IIRC, they're publishing Bravely Default: Flying Fairy in Europe and North America, then they published Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge - Although the latter went to other platforms, I wouldn't call them first-party titles, and I would still count them for the reason stated in my first sentence here.

This is the first year since the GBA that I haven't purchased a handheld title. Wii U and PC had all my money this year. Maybe next year.

It really did. I bought a Blue XL this year and don't regret one bit. I had and am having a blast with it. So much fun! Oh, and btw, I literally can't wait for Smash Bros.

This is just petty semantics but using that logic Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is a 3rd party game too. In the end it really doesn't matter. They are exclusive games for Nintendo platforms.

They are publishing games like Bravely Default in the west but they didn't pay for their development nor do they (co-)own the IP like with Wonderful 101.
