PS4 Hardware Review Thread

Now I bet they will say the opposite to an Xbone

Funny thing is if the non gaming stuff works and becomes appealing despite the media's disinterest in it and Forza and Dead Rising turn out great then I wouldn't be surprised to see better launch reviews. Even if in the long run PS4 has better games or even sells better. These launch games just sound bleh.

Loving how obvious it was to see all of these reactions to Sony stuff coming weeks ahead of time. The media could not be any more predictable.

Fair enough. The only decent game at launch is Killzone and even that is getting mixed reviews. Knack is doing badly and cod is better on the XB1.

I'm still getting mine but it seems Killzone is the only thing on it for the first few months. I knew it would be just a gorgeous eye candy shooter with no depth though.

How do you really review a console with a score? Odd.

Same way you score constantly changing games like Dota2 or League, i guess. Just have to look at what it offers now compared to the competition/expectations and assign it an arbitrary number.

Hardware reviews are one of the dumbest things about this industry.

Mostly agree.

All I need is a 'is this console going to blow up on me at launch?' article. A score is so incredibly arbitrary, especially for a system that is selling itself as a games console first and foremost.

I was surprised to see how clunky the patch download/install process was on PS4. Reminds me of the Vita. The rest of it is pretty elegant.

It still does that PS3 thing where if you accept friend requests really quickly you can catch the same one twice, causing an error msg.

Does that mean no seamless patching and installing? Have to download patch, then manually install?

CNET has their review up,
The next generation is here. Now wait.
The good: The PlayStation 4 serves up dazzling graphics, runs on a simplified and logical interface, and boasts a fantastic controller. It's also $100 cheaper than rival Xbox One and has the upper hand on indie and day one digital-only offerings.
The bad: Triple-A titles are lacking at launch, and the PS4 won't come close to matching its predecessor's gaming or software library for months -- or possibly years. PS3 games aren't compatible, though Sony is hinting that its Gaikai game-streaming service will open the door to retro gaming in 2014.
The bottom line: The PlayStation 4's beautiful graphics, blazing interface, and near-perfect controller make it a worthy successor to the PS3, but it would be wise to wait for more titles and features before you buy.

Poor hardware and software reviews are not what I want to be reading 2 days before it comes out.

This will be why Sony need to hold an event announcing new games on launch week.

... Don't call it a hardware review if the score is going to be based on the (far more subjective) lack of software at launch.

The real test will be how many of these same reviewers try and justify that Forza or Dead Rising are major reasons to trade up. Forza, a bare bones, but graphically improved version of many previous games - Dead Rising, which apparently runs poorly, at 720p. No bones about it - neither console has a must have game at launch. Nor did the Ps3, nor did the Xbox 360.

I guess I don't understand how they can use an "invisible" metric like "there's not many games yet" and it affect the score.

So its launch lineup is the only bad thing for an otherwise very positive review? I thought this was a hardware review?

well it lacking a few media features and little things would obviously ding the launch score.

hardware review is always a bit of a confusing term for videogame systems. Like yosp said, its all about the games. The bit underwhelming ps4 launch lineup (and those first party review scores, welp) doesn't help.

Kotaku's 'not yet' seems quite apt. ps4 will no doubt be kickass in 14 or 15, but it seems like it might not be a must investment of $400 this holiday.

Gonna be curious how xbox reviews. i'm betting hardware will score better because of all the entertainment stuff (while it being less powerful quietly dismissed ;P)

Hardware reviews are one of the dumbest things about this industry.

Not for PS4 or Xbox One since they have a lot of other features than gaming and a lot of people are only speaking about their specs... without even thinking about the quality of the games meh >_>

It shouldn't be, I agree but it's understandable.

I never think about reading a Wii U review because I bought the system for Nintendo's games. Now when I'm thinking about Xbox One or PS4 I think that it's fair to take into account all the other features.

lol @ Polygon

Criticizing a new console for a lack of games when it is actually the console with the most games.

From Polygon Review:

But our biggest complaint for a controller that some at Polygon otherwise consider the best they've ever used: over the course of a hundred plus hours with the DualShock 4, the battery life appears to sit somewhere in the 7-8 hour neighborhood, a fraction of the 30 hour battery life on the DualShock 3.

WHAT!? Dualshock 3 controller has a 30 hour battery life? What kind of controller are they using? I have 3 Dualshock 3 controllers, and none of them last long enough through a regular 8-10 hour sp campaign. I must have gone through 3-4 re-charges to finish GTA5.

PopSci just reviewed the PS4. They didn't like it too much. I await the XONE review which will probably be along the same lines. The reviewer prefers the Wii-U.

Conclusion of article:

PlayStation 4 Review: A Lot Of The Same - The PS4 feels a little too much like the PS3.

PopSci said:
Should You Buy This?

Unless you are desperately jonesing to play a game like the new Killzone, then no, or, at least, you should wait as long as you can. This doesn't feel like a step forward; it feels like a step sideways. A nearly identical interface, a slew of sequels, and a design that's not all there. (I was more fond of the Wii U, which turned out to be a complete commercial disaster, because it at least felt like something different.)

At some point, if you're regular gamer, you'll probably have to bite the bullet. A game will come out that you'll have to play, and you'll buy the console to play it. But remember: you'll be doing it for the game, not the console.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/tech...f-the-new-console-generation/article15393427/

While casual games on smartphones and tablets have captured some of the game industry’s dollars, consoles aren’t going anywhere. They’re still the best way to enjoy immersive, interactive escapism, and the PS4 represents a new high-water mark in delivering that experience.

There will inevitably be hiccups with the PS4’s online functions at launch – it’ll be a minor miracle if Sony manages to avoid major problems – so early-days buyers should be prepared for delays.

For serious gamers, it’s not really a question of “if” they’re going to buy a PS4, but “when.” Despite the massive install base of the current generation, developers are shifting their resources to the newer, more powerful machines. It won’t be long before all of the good games are coming out exclusively on next-generation consoles, with the PS3 and Xbox 360 eventually resigned to the same dustbin filled with Famicoms and Sega Dreamcasts of eras gone by.

And one final note: unless you’re a PlayStation loyalist there are other choices in the console market you might consider. So stay tuned, next week I’ll have a review of the PS4’s main competitor: Microsoft’s Xbox One.

http://www.************************...=playstation-4-ps4-console-ui-hardware-review

With the PS4, not only do games look, perform, and play so much better than on its predecessor due to the new processor and 8GB of RAM, but thanks to the easy-to-use design of the UI, interacting with the PlayStation Network services and features, or with friends socially is simple and seamless—exactly how it should be.

The next generation of PlayStation is here. Greatness awaits you on November 15th. See you on the PlayStation Network.

This is good (from the DF review):

Other surprise is that they say the voice controls are flawless.

Oh I didn't know that the games could play off the BD. I thought you had to wait for it to install the first bits before you could start playing. Interesting.

Exactly my thought process. What would constitute a high score day 1? As long as it works as intended and the features they said would be there at launch are there and working. Not sure how you wrap numerical value around that.

Engadget (pre-patch, 'first 48 hours' impressions):

http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/13/48-hours-with-the-playstation-4/

The PlayStation 4 is fast. The DualShock 4 is the best gamepad Sony's ever created. In 48 hours spent using the PS4 without its extremely comprehensive Day One patch, there are only so many feelings to feel about Sony's latest game console. We are in such a position this morning, having spent the past two days locked away in Engadget's Brooklyn office kicking The Playroom's AR bots around and shooting Helghast with the new DualShock 4.

ABC News

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/so...-strong-shot-console-battle/story?id=20874050

The Playstation 4 is a solid video gaming system, even without any comparison to the Xbox One. There's no one feature that could be called the Playstation 4 selling point, but instead, it's several smaller upgrades, like better graphics and improved controllers, that together create a gaming experience greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Mashable (Part 1 of 2)

After seven years of waiting, we have finally experienced next-generation gaming. Sony's PlayStation 4 gives us hope for more powerful, jaw-dropping video games, and leaves a lot to the imagination for the future.
