PS4 Hardware Review Thread

I think everyone ought to open the Polygon review just to see how beautiful the page itself is

Virtuoso coding, to be sure, but it is way too much for a simple review as it gets in the way of the information. Still, it is technically very nice.

Can't wait for the 9/10 XBone review.

"Truly next gen features like Skype and snap"

"While there aren't many games to play right now Xbox fantastic lineup of first party exclusive games is enough to look ahead"

Oh my god, I would pay for someone from Naughty Dog to just reply "Yes.".

Seems kind of weird to review a launch console and include a metric like the library. I mean, I know that the library is the most important part of the console itself, perhaps the only truly important part, but isn't it a given that the well is gonna be a little dry at launch? If you're going to do a hardware review shouldn't you only review, you know, the hardware?

Don't really care about the reviews. In fact, I'm shocked there are actual reviews of the console... seems pointless. Can't wait to get mine.

The PlayStation 4, in contrast, is a simpler system, and I mean that in the best possible way. It’s smaller, easy to set up, and doesn’t come with anything you don’t need. It focuses on games and, at least in the initial batch of games, it’s delivering more power. You need to pay for PlayStation Plus to play online, but Sony refused to hide other features behind a pay wall, and you get Resogun and Contrast free on day one with your subscription.

I've been playing games, interviewing developers, and traveling for the past 48 hours, so expect more stories from now until launch covering many of the features and games of the PlayStation 4. If you have questions, please ask in the comments. Sony wanted to focus on games, and by God they've succeeded in that goal. This is a hell of a system.

The console will power some great games in the future. Can't wait to get mine.

The machine itself looks great and has some good stuff on it. That Polygon review is once again the most questionable.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
This is an enormous challenge for the PS4. As a system focusing on games, that's where it currently lives or dies. As problematic, Sony's currently announced slate of platform exclusives is thin — shy of Infamous: Second Son, there's little to carry the PS4 through the spring and summer of 2014.

Umm...Drive Club, The Order. WTF are you talking about Polygon?

One thing's for certain after reading a bit here; Xbox One will be praised because of Kinect being included with the purchase.

Should you buy a PS4?

Yes. Sony has vaulted us into the next generation with style, delivering a powerful system that's sleek, speedy, and most importantly, user friendly. Even if you don't plan on picking up many PS4 games at launch, the system feels like an affordable and worthwhile investment that will do right by early adopters. As long as your PS4 doesn't cook itself, the two of you should get along just fine as you embark on the journey into the eight console generation.

Ars Technica, on game installations:

When I came back to the freshly reset system and tried to launch the game, I was a bit surprised to see an installation progress bar that was already about two-fifths complete. It seems that the system automatically started copying the disc data to my hard drive before I even launched it (I was able to confirm this in further tests).

That's a nice, user-centric touch that shows Sony seems to care about getting players into the game as quickly as possible despite the installs. From the moment a disc first hits the system to the moment it starts to load, the whole install process lasts anywhere from 10 seconds to just under a minute, depending on the game. Once the game launched, there was sometimes a few more minutes of additional installation before multiplayer modes were ready to go, but for players launching a single player game for the first time, the process was barely noteworthy.

Every article I've read seems to agree with this - barely any upfront install times on games, 45s-1min max. I was worried after reading about the size of some of these installs, whether it would get in the way of quickly playing.

Polygon's video review sums it all up.

"Right now, this is a game console without a game to recommend it."

Killzone Shadow Fall
Resogun
Contrast
Battlefield 4
Assassins Creed IV Black Flag
Fifa 14
NBA 2K14
NFS Rivals

Despite some of these games also being on current gen, many are legitimately far more comprehensive and feature rich on the next gen consoles, that's before we even get to talking about the big graphical improvements. In other words, I strongly disagree.

So the consensus is "This is a pretty great console but it hasn't delivered it potential."

....Is this the first console launch for the reviewers? My god, just post relevant information and leave the painfully obvious stuff behind.

You guys are aware that these reviews aren't necessary for the hardcore that know game release schedules for the next two years?

And a launch console is going to be judged by its available software. That's just how it is. These reviews are pretty reasonable. I'm sure the PS4 will have a fantastic library when it's all said and done, but the reviewers are using what's available now, during the holiday season, as a criteria.

With holiday dollars not unlimited, they need to inform their readers as much as possible. We complain about the lack of standards in gaming journalism, but when tech sites are more reasonable and not as fawning, we still complain.

You gotta remember that this is a 400 dollar investment as well. Most of the games you listed are available in other platforms. We're biased as hard core gamers. I myself am too. Console launches are exciting to us, but we have to remember that not everyone is going to come from that viewpoint.

And this is par for the course with console launches. Weak lineups.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
Reviewing hardware and discussing software isn't unusual. Happens with every phone review.

I expect the Xbone to fair similar overall.

I feel like the score is reasonable for the current library...if hardware reviews didn't take the software into account there wouldn't be much good to it. I think they mostly took into account the launch console software (firmware and whatnot), which seems rather rough at the moment. Sony does iterate rather quickly with lots of small updates (rather than microsoft's big yearly upgrades).
