Much like the 2008 Presidential election, this is the first console launch that is going to be heavily effected by social media and the effects that it has on events like this.

To quote my favorite game...

We now live in a world a console getting bricked creates a 30+ thread of panic and concern, even though if someone actually did the math the failure rate would probably fall within acceptable levels.
Quoting MGS2 to make a point? You are a true gentleman.

I don't understand this. Consumer electronics in 2013 should be able to withstand a sudden loss of power without completely bricking. What happens if you have a power outage? A pet accidentally knocks the cord out? The worst that should happen is some corrupt data. It's completely unacceptable for a device to become totally unusable due to such a simple and common random mishap.

You're supposed to buy a new one. It's about making money.

My friend won a Taco Bell PS4, he swapped out the drive immediately and tried to boot up but it didn't work. He tried putting the original HDD back in but it's the same problem. Called support and they're sending him a box. Obviously, he's shattered. I have no idea if the issue was the HDD swap or what, but I hope I don't have issues with mine on friday.

I was so jealous this morning, but now I feel bad that he's gotta wait even more than I do now.

Another one.

Pulling the plug versus holding down the power button may have made a difference, we don't know.

That's what I'm saying. is there a switch on the back of the unit that cuts it off. Or holding down the power button to cut it off.

It seems pulling the plug for ANY device is a recipe for disaster.

Thanks. We were not aware.

Can't even get online without the 1.5 patch. Good lawd.

You mean like the mandatory patches on PS3?

I am going to be swapping out my HDD. Perhaps it's best to go through the setup first before upgrading.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

My wife once pulled the plug on a running blender back in college and the fucking motor did a final jank, sparked, and then smoke came pouring out of the base unit.

I get this guy on Twitch is pissed, but he's being a proper arse to customer support.

That being said, them telling him to get another few HDMI cables... I've been on his end, when I know there's a hardware fault with the router - I don't need to do a factory restore, or change my Wifi settings.

Maybe we should all do the update via USB?

I'm downloading the update now.

Here's the instructions and update link:

http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps4/index.htm

Seems easy enough, make sure the folder naming is correct where your file is kept, insert USB, then power on the PS4 with a 7+ second power button press.

Yeah this is what I'll be doing. Updating in safe mode seems like the most logical thing to do for these early firmware updates.

Maybe I should have said something like that instead of embarrassing myself with my lack of knowledge of the history of the internet. I will get back under my rock.

Silly question but wtf is a repair box?

They send you some tools and a release form that you sign to absolve Sony of the warranty coverage, then they walk you through the repair process.

pretty sure it's just a box that fits the PS4 for shipping to their repair/refurbish facility.

Suck to hear your PS4 bricked dude.

My 7th Xbox 360 has been humming along like a champ for the last 2 years. But it was a bumpy ride to get a stable console on that shit, lol.

I'm definitely weary of any software updates. But I consider the risk I take as an early adopter of a console.

I burned through 3 PS2's and 3 360's. I never held it against the manufacturers because I put some serious mileage on them. My last 360 has lasted the longest and I credit that to installing all of my games before I even play them. I guess it puts less stress on the system to play from the harddrive. I will be continuing that into this gen.

Has anyone tweeted to Yosp?
Lol I bet he wont be in a hurry to answer about this one, fucking hilarious.
UPS just sent my tracking number el oh el.

So I take it this has been confirmed? Would hate if this were just an ill intentioned attack to damage public perception of the system.

Apologies if it's been confirmed legit already, but you can't help but be suspicious of these kinds of things.
