Anyone knowledgeable about circuit boards able to chime in?
As stated above, it seems there are two issues at play:
1) HDMI ports possibly being faulty
2) Background downloads locking things up
Now given that last gen had background downloads, you'd think that wouldn't be an issue.. the only difference I can immediately guess at is the dedicated chip for background processes/downloads ("secondary chip")
Anyways, long story short, here's the layout:

Now the back of the PS4 to see the ports:
Puts it sort of in the general area of the secondary chip.

Bumping with an update.
Friend 2 is now reporting a dead console. Said screen locked up with graphical corruption. Unplugged and tried to turn back on and lights came on but no display.
Said it had locked up about 9 times since fedex dropped it off yesterday.
Both of these guys were Taco Bell winners, and neither one of them were aware of the problems or anything so I don't think they'd lie to me.
Luckily all their XB1s are already bricks out of the box. Won't have to worry about them failing - they can only get better from there.

Or it could be small scale HDMI or large scale firmware. Or neither. Or both. We'll have a better idea tomorrow, one way or another though, that's for sure.

Thank you for your honesty and admitting we don't know how widespread it is with any sort of reliable polling. All we can say for certain is how we feel about it, and worry is real whether it's based on anything logical or not.

Everyone and their cousin who got a bit raw during due to console war tides turning this summer will be jumping all over this and posting fud all over the place, and weeding through the horse shit to people really having issues is going to get increasingly difficult.
Hopefully the people really having issues are doing the right thing and calling it in quickly so that the information can get where it is needed.

Eh, I'm actually pretty disappointed at the reports. Between the low review scores for launch games, faulty hardware and other reported issues, the previously unstoppable PS4 momentum and unbridled positivity enjoyed on GAF is slowly fading away, giving a breather to all the negative XBONE threads that were prevalent on the forum.
I'm just mad that Sony couldn't do a clean PR sweep right when it matters. The undecided might decide to move to the *shudder* next best thing and at this critical moment, Sony can't afford to lose face.

Both are dead, exact same issue but one took a lot longer to die than the other.

Are you joking? Cause I have to assume you are. Sony has had quite the success rate with their hardware manufacturing. And Microsoft won't think anything until they actually launch. If anything they are sitting there hoping they don't have any high publicized launch units break down.

Some people just aren't happy until they have something to worry about. "Oh, is my PS4 gonna brick like those people on the internet?" "Is Best Buy gonna give away my preorder?" "Am I gonna get mugged like I saw that one white guy on the news?"
Someday I want somebody to explain to me how they live like that. I'd end it yesterday if I couldn't control those thoughts.

It has been a hell of a couple days for Sony that's for sure. There is this whole thing making everyone worry and then the reviews were less than what they hoped for I'm sure outside of Resogun doing well.
I think they need to get on top of this and just say anyone who has a DOA Ps4 will get a free few months or year of PS Plus, some Store credit, SOMETHING to make them feel better about having to wait days or weeks more to get their system exchanged. It would go a long way in continuing their nice streak of goodwill.

"A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems. This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch.
There have been several problems reported, which leads us to believe there isnt a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of systems. The number of affected systems represents less than .04% of shipped units to date, which is within our expectations for a new product introduction.

First one that told me about it said he was losing video signal but would get it briefly on the screen if he pushed and put pressure on the back of the console near the HDMI cable.
Second one was locking up ever since he got it (only in menus, never in games) and then said today it locked up with some graphic corruption and he didn't have any display after that.
So maybe it's not the same issue but I assumed we were considering it to be something wrong with the HDMI ports at this point.

I have been burned so many times over the years by buying launch consoles at launch, never again. I wait until the new Mass Effect comes out in 2015-16 before I delve into next gen. All the problem's will be sorted out by then.

That would be acknowledging the problem exists, and unless they get to the same point MS did with the RROD, I see no need for them to release a PR now. Would do more harm then good.
They could, however, promptly replace the faulty units and silently give the owners PS+ for free and some store credit and let them do the PR.

The internet is responsible for most of it. Half these people are just trying to get their 15 minutes of fame. Worse failures probably happened last gen we just didn't hear about them via internet broadcasts as soon as they were unboxed. Tomorrow is gonna be interesting. I hope if mine is bricked I get a refund plus an extra 100 bucks so I can afford an XB1.

Failure rates in consumer electronics are always way more than 0.4 percent. Sony being disingenuous here. That said, I'm not convinced there is a problem.
You can look for ps4 streamers on twitch. But for the news outlets out of 5 Kotaku got 1 broken one, IGN had greater than 5 and had 1 broken one.

Yes, it's in the promotion details. There was also a promotion where PS4's were being sold at the location of the review event in New York all day. There's also the review consoles and the consoles that shipped early, one of the broken ones is from wal mart for example.
I'll admit to not owning a PS2/PS3/PS4.. but this is one of the worst fanboy posts I have ever seen on this forum.
So everyone is complaining about 10 out of 4000 going bad? Some hardware difficulties are expected it's a new console and manufacturing errors do occur. Just be happy it comes with a year warranty and you can add on an additional 2 for just $50 bucks. No biggie people Sony will come through.
