PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

See, this is my worry when people in this thread are already calling the console war over.

While I will admit I haven't read every post in this thread I have been keeping up with the last couple of pages and haven't seen any real claims that the console war is over

Perhaps indirectly???

Unless you mean all the comparisons to the Wii U and then well I don't think the idea the Wii U isn't going to "win" the console war is that outlandish

See, this is my worry when people in this thread are already calling the console war over. Although you mentioned a bunch of consoles that failed to catch on, with the exception of the Jaguar, most of those machines have generally offered great experiences because they had to offer something to combat the PlayStation brand that was sucking up all the exclusives. So, for example, I had much more fun with both the GameCube and Xbox libraries. Indeed, I've always found the PlayStation brand to be... not mediocre, but vanilla. Inoffensive, I guess.

The thing is, it's not 2003 any more. No company is going to take a chance, and the age of third-party exclusives is slowly coming to an end. So if the Xbox One tanks, what's going to be the consolation prize for owners like it was in the PS2 days? It didn't matter that the machine had only shifted 25 million units or so and had tanked in Japan when you were playing Halo, KOTOR, Morrowind, Jade Empire, Project Gotham Racing, etc. I mean at least Nintendo will have to keep supporting its own platform for at least the immediate future.

When you chuck in the fact that franchises like Wipeout have been kicked to the curve in favour of cinematic experiences like Uncharted and The Last of Us, as someone who bought an Xbox 360 to play Geometry Wars, a knockout blow by Sony in Round One would actually be something that I would be concerned about rather than elated.

But then again I'm in the minority of GAF users.

This seems inaccurate.

Anyway. Totally not surprised. PS4 hype was huge. I expected this, and Sony will break that 5 million before the fiscal year is out, too.

They're gonna outsell Wii U this year easy.

It certainly looks that way. After one day the PS4 is already very close to the Wii U's install base after a year. I could definitely see it passing Wii U in EU in one day for that launch. At least in the UK.

Congrats to Sony. Those are some amazing first day numbers.

Also, obligatory:

I don't really care about sales numbers but it will be quite interesting to see how Microsoft compare in their home territory. I'd imagine even if Microsoft outsold them in the US they could still see it as a win due to how strong the Xbox is in it's home territory.

Europe will be quite interesting too, although it's largely Sony's territory they are a week later so I think it's going to be as simple as some people just not wanting to wait another week.

Japan/Asia isn't even worth thinking about, Sony could release 12 months after Microsoft and still outsell them 10-1 without even trying.

A lot of countries in Europe including mine (Sweden) still don´t have a release date for the Xbox One . Also one of my go to sites for news about everything boys (and some girls) want cars, electronics, science etc. recently did a poll on what next machine are you getting and the results were quite one sided:

Feber.se What next gen console will you buy?
Both:5%
Xbox one:12%
PS4:56%
WiiU:4%

About 3000 voted.

Sweden current gen (can you still call it that?) was pretty much 50/50 when you compared 360 to ps3 but it looks like there will be a huge difference this time around. Off course we will have to wait and see for actual numbers but from talking with friends that number seems about right from what I have heard as well.

How that correlate to the rest of Europe I don´t know

PS4 gonna sell like gangbusters here in Asia. Mark my words, it'll be sold out quicker than you can say "Xbox, go home"

Consumers congratulating a corporation is a real Jackie Chan meme for me. What is it about consumer electronics that makes people treat it like a sporting event?

Because unlike most consumer devices that get success, Sony will Instead support that successful device for 5+ years with Games/Apps etc.(same applies to Nintendo and Microsoft)

While most other devices release an updated version the next year with slightly better features.

We are gamers and to get games...sadly the consoles have to be successful to have a great and diverse library, simple truth.

This system is everything I wanted it to be. Class act all around, I can't think of many issues I have with it and the ones I have are borderline nitpicking.

I'm very very happy with the way the PS4 turned out, we're in for a great generation!

The best part of this news is that Sony have actually manged to produce such number of units.
(For PS2 and Wii numbers they could have done better if there were units available).

Very impressive. Moreso considering it's launch line-up is arguably as weak as the Wii U's ...if not weaker based on review scores of exclusives.

Still it usually helps when you actually market your product and have the support of the gaming media (although not in Vita's case). Iwata will have some tough questions to answer at his next investors meeting (as Wii U will likely have been outsold by PS4 in those few months).

After the disasters of the PS3 and Vita launches they look well positioned to dominate this gen.

Ignoring Resogun there? Also if sales have such effect over what you enjoy why are you in this thread, besides to whine and complain about mostly off-topic issues?

The Geometry Wars comment was only to give an indication of taste. I wouldn't buy a console for just one game these days. But yes, Resogun looks nice.

Also, if you read the comments I've made as a whole rather than in isolation, you won't see them as off-topic (or shouldn't). I asked why were people congratulating a corporation. People said that it was because it was better for gaming as a whole. I disagree -- or at the very least it's based on your point of view -- and highlighted how extreme success for Sony isn't indicative of positive trends for gaming as a whole.

What will be great for gaming is competition. Nintendo's already in the toilet, so if Microsoft can't deliver a return punch of equal strength and Sony becomes the de facto standard, it could actually be detrimental, at least to some.

EDIT:

The console war is over!Congrat Sony!

That's... much better than I anticipated.

I figured that would be the tally by the end of the month. With Black Friday.

This might be one of the first times we've ever seen a new console take top spot in such a busy month.

They sold a million units. A million units are running in people's homes right now.
You'd think there would be a muuuuuuch bigger uproar by now if the unit is as prone to defects as people try to make it sound.

We've already had a pretty big uproar, and not just here.

But I agree, we're completely in the dark as to the scale of problems. We don't know about validity, percentages, batches, demographics, regions, nothing. We'll just have to wait and see.

My point is that the bad press is there, and it's potentially going to affect purchases from this point. I'm sure as hell not going to buy one until I know what's going on.

Don't know where the ps2 numbers from above come from, but these are the numbers I have for these consoles in their debut months for US:

ps3 = 196,580
360 = 325,902
ps2 = 391,245
wii = 476,140
ds = 479,695
psp = 620,000
gc = 647,466
ps4 > 1mil

Good stuff, more competition in this industry is nice. How soon can we feed the crow to the people in the NPD threads saying the Vita and Wii U were signaling a new crash of the industry?

...Only half kidding. ;P
Haha! THIS!

People were reluctant to believe Wii U was an unwanted console and blamed the industry was in dire trouble, forecasting trouble for Sony and MS! Sony will outsell WiiU before the end of the year, and that's great sign what people want from manufacturers

Even though I ended up with a brick, I'm happy for Sony regardless and I hope this just the beginning of a very successful first year.

The PS2 figure of 980k was day 1 Japan if I read it correctly...

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Ok, 1 million first day of shipment would have been big, but SELL-THROUGH?!? WHAT THE HELL...it's massively gigantic. Heck, now I can believe it can challenge 3DS for the first place in November NPD, what the freaking hell :lol

Wow, why did gc sell so much?
Very impressive regarding ps4, congrats sony.

Nintendo must be kicking themselves. They probably bought into the delusion that the industry as a whole was dying.

It's possible, though I suspect 3DS weathers this charge and stays on top. What's less clear is whether legacy Gen7 hardware will surpass Gen8 hardware for NPD in November. It'll be interesting to watch. I could see the finishing order being 3DS, PS4, XBO, X360, PS3, WiiU when the data comes next month. Not a lock, mind you, but quite possible.

You're having a mild meltdown. Calm down. Xbone will be fine. There's going to be plenty of Halo for you in the upcoming generation. Don't you worry about vanilla Uncharted okay ?
