DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

My controller is just fine so far. I've been playing Resogun consistently since the midnight launch and my controller still looks brand new.

Less than 8 hours of use on my DS4, and I can definitely see it starting to exhibit this problem. Not nearly as bad as some of the posters in this thread luckily. I'm guessing it's from Resogun. I hope they get this sorted out.

I treat my gaming stuff really well, but I noticed my sticks are starting to show wear already.
I love the controller, but this material is just too fragile. My DS3 and yes, even Sixaxis show no wear. The DS4 material is very grippy, but it doesn't do us any good if it rubs off.
I have a feeling we'll see stores selling stick caps for $5 soon.

All 3 of my controllers are fine and have been in use non-stop since Friday afternoon. One of them is my prelaunch controller and looks no different than the others.

Mine's fine. Extremely comfortable and so much better than any previous controller. My thumbs do not hurt in any way, shape, or form.

Yeah this was my biggest worry for the controller. Not looking good at all. I don't even use my 360 controller thumb sticks that rough and they only started flaking 5 years into their life. I would rather just a solid plastic with dotted grips in the texture or something than rubber which comes with a doomsday clock.

Hopefully they do a controller revision. Not buying a PS4 right now, but it is making me even more wary of a purchase even down the line.

I don't know why I'm posting here. Maybe only because you responded to me. The way I see it,

  1. [*]This doesn't concern me since my controller works just fine.
[*]I'm not going to abuse it to try and aggitate the potential problem.
  2. It's an easily fixable problem. There are grips and you could just take it back. Get a return. Buy another one and return this one. There's so many options.
  3. Not enough evidence for widespreadness.

It will be a problem. If people are experiencing this problem within days, expect some time down the line in a few months for it to happen to you, no matter how delicate you are with them.

Is it possible a subset of the controllers were manufactured differently and worse?
It's possible. Others are reporting damage after 2 days of use. I've been putting mine through the wringer the last two days and its fine. There's definitely a problem, but I don't think it is affecting every controller.

Does anyone else's thumb kind of hurt after using the DS4 for a while? FWIW I have one of the apparently affected controllers, but the problem on mine is not as bad as many others here. Nevertheless, it kidn of feels like I've been rubbing my thumb against sandpaper for a long time.

God dammit.

Given how fast some people are seeing wear on these things, it is most likely that the material used has been compromised in production... Either while producing or assembling. If it's the former it could be very widespread (depending on how many coatings used a faulty material). The latter could be sporadic.

Either way, this has to be covered by warranty as it goes way beyond normal expected wear.

I'm leaning this direction also. If a batch of this new material was improperly cured or whatever then it would fit the pattern of only some people being affected.

I certainly want to think that this was not the kind of wear Sony intended as normal. That strikes me as absurd.

I had a similar problem w/ my 360 controller (after years of use). I just use these now.

I just bought these. Mostly because I don't think I like the way the current rubber feels. Hopefully these give me the softness/grippy I'm looking for.

I noticed a very tiny part of the right side of my left thumbstick wearing down when looked at closely under a desk lamp after lots of Resogun. Everything else seems to be holding up just fine.

What's the official manufacturer's warranty on this?

May look into it. I love the sticks but the rubber isn't all the way to my liking.

Popped into Argos to have a look at the PS4 display unit, both controllers were in a god awful condition. The 2nd controller had half of its rubber missing from its top, the first had no rubber left at all. It had been completely wornaway.

They need to change the materials on these tthings. They really should not be wearing down this easy.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?

I will say this, and I noticed it a month ago when I went to the Sony Store to try the thumbsticks. The thumbsticks are made out of Charmin Tolietpaper... And I keep getting paranoid that they'll do something.

My standalone controller seems to have softer more sensitive material and lighter in color than the one that came with the system. Hopefully it's just a bad batch and Sony caught it.

Both my console bundled controller, and an additional controller I bought are still fine.

I wonder how many have run into an issue.

This sucks balls.

My 360 pad and Dual Shock 3 are so damn old. Yet they look virtually new. I take good care of my equipment and I would hate to be screwed over by Sony thanks to shoddy build quality.

Wish those Grip-It covers came in black. I may end up picking up a few as preventative maintenance. So far my controller is fine, but I've barely used it.

Looks like a batch of badly cured rubber is in the system, controllers are hopefully stress tested, so I'm hoping this is a limited problem.

GAME had a bunch of PS4's on demo tonight, played a few and on the last PS4 I went to play a game and the left thumbstick had bit of the top layer taken off all the others were fine.

maybe tomorrow it rains
I can feel my left thumbstick getting smoother. I picked one up when they first came out to use on my PC. I've probably put 10-15 hours on it. It was fine until I played DmC the other night.

This is what I'm thinking too. This thread would have exploded otherwise. Got to wait and see, I guess

If people are experiencing it within a couple days, such as myself, then it is likely due to there being a bad batch. It does not mean that every controller will eventually have this problem.

Not even a week yet...

There's no point being the harbinger of stick-doom, this will resolve itself one way or the other. Unless all the rubber purchased by Sony is complete shite that is.

They will just have to swallow the cost of exchanging the busted ones.

dat sony seal of quality, dat playstation quadruple manufacturing

I see people still trying to spin this garbage and/or sweep it under the rug. Sony fucked up, deal with it.
