DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

Damn, quality control seems to be slipping. Never had DS1/2 problems but one DS3 ended up with an over sensitive trigger and the other had sticky thumbsticks. Now this?

It's like you want DS4 to break quickly

I don't at all, but not gonna lie, it's somewhat vindicating after being called a troll or xbot. My sticks fell apart quickly, not to the degree as some others, but nonetheless the rubber seems to degrade quickly.

Too early to say if this is a widespread issue or not. If we hear that in one month that 50%+ of all PS4 controllers have wear like this, then its definitelly a problem.

50%? Really? 10-15% would be pretty awful. Taking a pretty significant gamble everytime you purchase one.

considering I end up having to have the thumb on the bottom most edge of the stick in order to push it up (like if the character is walking forward) I see this happening to me eventually :(

well by Christmas time we'll know if this is a legitimate issue or not. It's pretty bad news if true. With all the the work Sony put into designing the DS4, you'd think Quality Control would've made sure the sticks were durable.

Do some people have their finger nails on these sticks at all times? A lot of these pics look like a cut was made to the rubber.

I've already out 15+ hours on my sticks and don't see a single sign of wear.

People need to learn to contain their impulses when a new console comes out. Every console seems to have a bad launch quality wise. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo... All have launch quality issues.

Best thing to do IMO is to wait a few months at least so the bugs are fixed.

Do you guys play digging your nails into the middle of the sticks or nah? Jesus. That last pic has the stick all scratched up, If so thats not a controller defect.... Thats user error/abuse...

I see now that i might have worded myself a bit poorly, sorry. I was thinking if it was an universal design problem, then it should happen to "every" (or 50%+) PS4 controller in the near future, even with normal usage. Like you said "not even a week yet", and some people have seen noticeable wear, then a lot more people should see wear in about a month from now if this is an universal design problem.

If it happends to 10-15%, which is also a quite high number indeed, i agree, but not to the remaining 85-90%, then at least we know that its some specific production problem that happened somewhere and not something that will affect every controller.

God dammit.

What the hell? And there are quite a few GAF members with the same problem...

This worries me, damn it.

That's what I did partly due to this thread, but I don't think everyone should not buy a launch console due to worries about problems like these.

The tops of the sticks on my two DS3s still look like new. They should have gone with material that durable this time, too.

That's really upsetting, the DS3 thumbsticks weared out as well but that was after years of usage.

Is that the one that came with the console?

They wear down and get shiny, they lose their grip a little.

I wouldn't consider this wearing down, these are breaking down.

Yeah some of these look like straight user error...cut your damn nails

This thread reminded me that I have 2 DS3's with the thumb stick rubber things half way on now (I can pull them back). I don't use them anymore, and threw them away. I don't know how that happened.

Bullshit. You don't wear a controller in a way that your nails touch the bottom part of the stick. Just look at the screens posted on this thread. How the hell do you manage to do something like that with a nail unless you're really trying?

Thank God I play games one handed and hold my controllers in an entirely different way to you two handed people. This should not affect me ..... hopefully. lol

as i said SOME of the sticks look like they have the shit scratched out of them from thumb nails. may some people have been doing it deliberatly? maybe. But you'd be surprised at the ways different people use the sticks & hold controllers

The DS4 is perfect on so many other levels that I'm not even mad. Still a 5/5 in my book.

Been playing with 2 controllers back and forth all weekend. Both stick nubs are fine. No wearing or stickiness.

No such buttons either. Everything is perfect.

I did finally get a sticky DS3 nub yesterday though. It was my backup controller that I haven't used in months. Been sitting on a cradle. Wiped it with a wet paper towel and now it's good to go.

My nails are trimmed to the point where they're practically nonexistent, and it's happening to my controller.

Then maybe you should read the thread... this issue has been discussed to death. It's not nails, it's friction, and it affects the controller far faster than it would your DS3 or sixaxis.

Think about what you're saying. Using the analog stick with your nails and playing competently is impossible. People are not digging their nails into it, they're applying enough pressure to where the rubber is wearing off. This is based on my own experience because i've been playing a lot of games that require both sticks.

I've been babying my damn controller ever since I took it out with normal play. This is not user error, Sony fucked something up. I'm willing to bet if you put in the time with your controller, it's going to happen.

I have around 15 hours as well and my controller looks like brand new..

So why didnt we see a huge rash of problems with other controllers if this was a case of user error? My left stick is degrading already and I dont gouge it, I don't bite it. It's a poorly made fucking controller. It's not user error when something starts to break down from normal use. Stop blaming the gamer for Sony's problem.

Has anybody tried replacing the sticks with DS3 sticks? I don't have any around to try out for myself.

If those fit, then you may not even see the concave sticks in the next batch.

They redesigned the shape of the stick for a reason. The ds3 sticks were an undesirable shape.

These pads are of terrible quality, as not only are people suffering with the sticks but the shoulder buttons wear out fast(a few hours for me). How long till we see a revision? My DS3 is still like new even after 2 years.

They're tried and true, and I'll gladly take them back now.

Yeah I agree with this. The issue is real. The question really is how widespread.

It may be to do with the mad rush to meet launch quotas, there's at least a million out in the wild now, reports should flood in soon if it's a design flaw.

Perhaps people should stop trying to understand other people's hypothetically different methods of using their controller and just start considering that just maybe there's an issue with the device itself. It does no good sweeping this issue under the rug and just having warranty isn't enough if they don't fix the cause of the problem. Whether it's an isolated occurrence or not, presenting proof and having it thrown back in your face because of your "sandpaper thumbs" or "razor blade nails" is insulting.

I don't own a DS4 but I will say I did find the sticks extremely grippy at the EB Games that I tried it at. I don't believe I've ever used anything like it before (not any other pad, mouse, etc) and I could start to believe that's why they could be breaking down the way are. The one at Best Buy however was more smooth but it could be from regular use.

20hrs of use so far and golden. Probably a rotten bunch. It's hard to see how big the issue is one there's 1mil+ controllers out there plus the ones sold weeks prior.

God dammit.

Wow, it's so disappointing to see this actually starting to become a thing amidst all of the other issues. Never in my life have I had analog sticks do this, let alone after a couple of days. These things are supposed to last years. Must be some cheap ass materials being used.

Not saying this isn't a problem, but it looks like you mainly have to use the edge of the stick(rather than the middle) to get that kind of damage, even with friction. I can't see how else it can get damaged like that.

Here's mine:

Notice damage in the middle and around the edge. My nail never touches any part of the stick. I think I've logged less than 15 hours with the controller.

Hmmm yeah, that's pretty bad. I hope Sony releases some kind of cap or glove or something.

Nah. Sony should give out replacements (assuming this is a production flaw and not a design flaw)

I'm actually thinking about walking into a Sony store with it tomorrow and see what they say.

Edit: Another possibility aside from a production /a ssembly issue is that the material could be sensitive to the oiliness or pH level of peoples' skin, and different skin affects the material differently. I have a second DS4 which I've switched to exclusively. If it happens to the second DS4 as well, or with my replacement (assuming Sony store will replace this one), that theory will be more credible.

how is this shit not tested??

felt a dual shock 4 today and its one if the best controllers I have ever felt!! The sticks on the demo unit were fine.
