Speedrunning Thread - RESETRESETRESET

Apparently the in-game timer in Ducktales Remastered is not entirely reliable, as it's resetting a stage's time if you reset that stage, essentially allowing you to do the game as a segmented run if you so desired.

Does anyone want to make a thread for the Chicago Speedathon this weekend?

The Chicago Speedathon is a speedrunning marathon taking place October 4-6 that features several runners from the Chicago area who are trying to raise money for awesome people such as Lindsey King, ssskinner, 0xa101 and Klaige to be able to attend AGDQ 2014! This will be done live with all the runners in one place, making this one of the most fun community marathons yet! More details are listed below.

Im actually hyped to make the AGDQ thread now that ive seen the lineup.

Question to you guys, do you think I should include some popular runners, memes and websites?

Maybe make a lexicon so people understand what teh urn is.

I've been speedrunning Silent Hill 4: The Room lately. I got my personal best time the other night: 1h 23m 40s (in-game time). That was a 10-star, all-memo run. I could definitely cut that down with a no-memo-collecting, any-star run (memos are necessary in SH4 for a 10-star ranking). My goal is to speedrun all the original four Silent Hill games at some point. I also want to get a SH4 run posted on Speed Demos Archive since there currently isn't one.

I try to do a run at least once a week, so if anyone's interested in watching me smash a game that used to geniunely frighten the shit out of me, come join me. Follow to make sure you never miss a run.

Cyghfer got the Rockman 2 WR today.

Checkers got Rockman 3 a week or two ago.

I would love to start playing 3 again but I don't think I'd want to commit the amount of time it would take for a serious run. My PB on an NES playing the American version was about 48 minutes which is not very good. I did it deathless though! I fear I've developed way too many bad habits by playing the anniversary collection for fun to ever do that well on an original cart again.

SRL drama

Why can't people just shut up and play video games and not worry about partnerships and Twitch bucks and all kinds of dumb stuff. Races and contests are always fun so who gives a crap if it's for a modest amount of prize money at the end.

Of course people are overreacting.

I don't think it's overreacting to not want to see advertisers get their slimy hands all over one of the few gaming competitive things that isn't covered in that shit.

Yeah, but we need advertising / money to keep up sites (SRL, Twitch, etc.), and having more money in the community would give speedrunners more resources.

It's unfair to demand that speedrunners and speedrunning sites provide us with free entertainment while getting nothing in return.

SRL requires 100-200 dollars a month to be taken care of which is ALWAYS met. Popular runners get subs and twitch advertising money on their individual channel. The speedrunning community is always generous with donations.

I'm pretty sure most speedrunners speed run because they enjoy the game. Once you involve money in it, you'll have people going 'shmyeah im gonna speed run to get paid' and no one likes that. It turns what is usually a great, friendly community into yet another e-sports fuckup. Most of the guys I like have a real job and just do it as something on the side, Sinister1, Adam_AK, Flicky, etc. And I almost never see them begging for subs. I doubt they want to stream all day, and I doubt anyone would want to watch them stream all day, every day.

Paying out prize money to host streams one day a week for 3 months

It's not like they were selling SRL or anything. It's a community based activity and if the community didn't like it they could choose not to participate. I really don't see the problem.

People (predictably) overreacted, reacted poorly, lashed out at those involved. It's pathetic the amount of heat and hate that Cosmo and especially pie got as a result of this. It was a fun thing that was free to enter and you ran a game for 3 months. I knew when it was announced it would be really unpopular despite being nothing more than SRL points for money or pie's showcase races with prizes paid by an entity and not by donations.

Really though the mob mentality towards people trying to go in a different direction is sickening. There really was no excuse for some of the bile I was seeing thrown Cosmo and pie's way.

This is exactly what happens when you have people making Twitch a full time job though. It's all about marketing yourself and having more people follow you and eventually sub to you so you can make more money. Of course people aren't going to like it when you use a fun thing to market yourself.
