Speedrunning Thread - RESETRESETRESET

I finally started routing Phantasy Star IV. Procrastinated enough. :p

didnt he have the record previously too? Or did cosmo beat him

Yeah, but there's been new strats that have been found, which brought the game sub-18. Also, Cosmo isn't even close to being as good at the game as Romscout. He's good in one specific category, I think it was low%.

Some SRL drama going on right now. Werster, Peaches, Duke Bilgewater, and probably some others' accounts got banned.

I'll try to sum it up as best I can, for people interested.

cyghfer gets his twitch emotes removed. It was kind of expected, not a huge deal, but still lame anyway. He had a metal slime, afro ken, and some sleeping creature I'm unfamiliar with (maybe from Gimmick?). People reasonably upset. For those who don't know, cyghfer is very well-respected within the community. He responded in a respectful manner. Not a huge deal, but people started making some comments towards Horror, especially in regards to his lack of research before removing emotes.

Then Horror (admin for Twitch) adds a global emote of his boyfriend's fursona. People are pretty upset by this, as it's pure cronyism, and has very little to do with gaming.

Duke_Bilgewater (a speedrunner) makes an offhand comment in someone's chat: "Horror, what is the quickest way into your pants so I can get a global emote too?" followed by NightLight, the emote Horror added. He was subsequently ip banned, his channel removed.

Then shit hits the fan. Some of Duke's friends in the community lash out against Horror, including peaches, who put "REMOVE HORROR" in his stream title. His stream is banned. Werster was open about his opinions against Horror as well, and his stream is banned. I'm sure there are other casualties, but these are the ones I know about.

This image gives a nice amount of screenshots and information regarding this. It seems there's a harassment campaign going on against Horror right now, and while it's not the best way to go about things, it's hardly unexpected. Jason, Horror's boss, has stated that he's not going to take any actions against Horror for this, regardless of the community backlash.

While there's immaturity on both sides, it could have been avoided altogether if it weren't for the blatant cronyism and ip bans. If it had just been cyghfers emotes, it probably would have blown over in a few days. But as it stands, this could dramatically alter the relationship between SRL and Twitch.

So much immaturity from both sides. But I can't believe the twitter responses from the twitch support account, that is so unprofessional.

I was wondering what this whole "REMOVE HORROR" thing was about and was enlightened watching/listening to Werster's stream yesterday.

This whole situation is insane.

This situation is really stupid. The SRG/SRL side has done some stupid shit themselves (e.g. spamming the twitch subreddit with "remove horror"), but the level of incompetence and lack of professionalism from Twitch's side is just absolutely astounding.

Some people tweeted at Twitch, politely and without any slander, voicing concerns and suggesting that in this occasion, transparency and flexibility would be appropriate, but most if not all of them were blocked by the Twitch twitter accounts.

It's like the site is administered by children. Yet the site is basically promoting vore fetish pornography.
When money is involved, the involvement of porn on the same side is just bad mojo. I am just waiting for salty people to contact MS, Sony, Riot, etc. over this.

I will never give money to twitch and this is part of the reason why. I was in the remove horror stream and I had no idea what was going on until the drama started in the chat about changing the name. It was like a race to the bottom between middle schoolers only some of them are actually supposed to be professional. I agree that attacking Horror for things that aren't related to twitch is really dumb but banning for that joke is really bad too. You almost have to expect it at a certain point because of how Twitch chat is.

Also the emotes everyone knew that was going to happen eventually. It's happened to everyone that uses emotes like that. It sucks but as stated it would have probably been over with by the weekend.

I find it surprising that one of the twitch admins said we should be paying as much as a cable bill to twitch because of the content on there. Such a bad view.

There are a few twitch admins who absolutely love speed running. There is no way these bans will hold up. They will cave, speed running isn't as niche as it used to be.

ProgramMax has always seemed like a really good guy when he's popped into various speed running streams, so hopefully he'll be able to provide a level headed hand on this for the Twitch side of things.

There's been an admin answering questions on the situation for the last hour or so in http://www.twitch.tv/msgtgunny that I've popped in and out of, but it doesn't seem like that is going too far.

Thanks for the recap meijiko! Saw some dudes tweeting in twitter and was even watching peaches last night not knowing what remove horror was. Hope they fix this.

People are pissed at Mofat now saying he was using this as a stunt to get more viewers and stuff. I have no idea since I wasn't in his stream but he does little talks like this when big drama happens all the time.

Was watching some streamer named qwerty1605 with a remove horror stream title and he got banned.

Courtney came in and did it and people were positively awful to them as a result.

While I agree that Horror crossed the line, the people acting like shits for next to no reason are making it worse.

The people being antagonistic to be antagonistic I hope are banned forever.

You mean like the admins coming to a stream and forcing a change of title, banning the person if they don't comply? I agree.

No I'm pretty sure qwerty got banned for telling Courtney to suck it. He probably would have just had his title changed or would have been fine had he changed it himself after his run died.

Yeah I don't really feel like getting banned on GAF over this dumb stuff. Just take our word for it that it happened and it's disgusting.

It's at times like these you see who in this community are decent people and who are just little shits who made (semi-)e-famous from speedrunning getting big. I mean look at that chat log from qwerty's channel, both him and some of his mods make disgusting comments.

Yeah, that's the most surprising thing here. Twitch is a large site with partnerships with the major console manufacturers, and their public twitter account is getting into this petty bullshit because one of their admins is kind of a dick? Jesus.

Clean up your act, fix whatever needs to be fixed behind the scenes, and respond publicly in a professional manner.

I think the thing about Twitch is that it's suddenly blown up, but it's still got the staff of a small site that isn't constantly in the public eye. Even Justin TV was never THAT popular.

So I'm confused, is this a place for actual speedrunners to post vids and discuss strats and whatnot, or just a place for the spectators to drool over drama and discuss Twitch.tv? So is it a hangout for REAL speedrunners, or just the spectators?

This thread? It's for people to discuss speedgaming in general. I doubt we have enough speedrunners to incite discussion beyond "hey, look at my runs," so of course it's going to have people who are fans and spectators. I don't see why it has to be an either/or situation. Right now there is drama going on, so of course people are going to comment on it.

If you're looking for discussion purely with other speedrunners, I'd recommend the SDA forums.

Yeah, I've been a active member there for a while. Just seemed like the thread title was a bit misleading in the fact most people are simply just sipping Pepsi and spectating, not actual legitimate runners... Sad we have so few here on GAF.

This thread is about speedrunning in general, and everybody is welcome to talk about it, imo. :)

We've got a few runners here (myself included), but most of the runners aren't active on GAF. It's very unlikely you'll run into somebody else playing the same game here on GAF, so there's not going to be much strats to talk about.

SDA is probably your best bet, as mentioned, or talking to the runners of that specific game in question - some games have their own unique places (e.g. F-Zero Central).

Not sure where I read this, but isn't Miles from GAF? Or does he frequent the forums?

I was just wondering, why do so many speedruns abuse glitches to skip massive chunks of the game? doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a speedrun? To see how fast you can complete the game with the skills you have?

The glitches take skill to do too. Also there are different categories of speedrun. Some games just flow better with glitches (or the glitch category happens to be more popular) or becoming suitable to watch/stream at event (e.g. Donkey Kong 64...glitch free is like 6 hour single segment because the game auto saves any time you collect anything, glitched is about 1 hour instead).

I remember in the past some runners have left the community completely over feeling there is too much emphasis on various out of bounds glitch warping.

The only "purpose" of a speedrun is beating the game as fast as possible. There are people that do glitchless but the line between a glitch and a game mechanic is often times very thin and it always end up with drama trying to decide what should be banned or not.

The simplest thing is simply allow anything that's possible within the game and if the glitches make the game boring to run they just make categories that ban that specific glitch rather than glitchless.

Case in point: Ocarina of Time. Last year a glitch was found to warp from the Deku Tree (first dungeon) to the end boss. Not long after that, a category appeared which bans this glitch, making the run longer by default. Ocarina of Time has a total of 7 widely accepted categories, which range from any% (any glitch goes) to glitchless. It's up to each individual viewer and runner to decide on what one wants to watch or run.
