Smart move. People are dumb. People will brick the system, then what?
Just because some people are dumb doesn't mean that an update alternative has to be totally removed. If you brick any system by not following instructions correctly, it's on you.

Exactly. What happens to the people who dont have Internet? I assume they are SOL. There has to be an option to download it to at least get some stuff functional on it.Wow, that's dumb.

The PS4 update was much smaller and an alternative (downloading through the website) was offered. During the midnight release I went to the clerk even walked down the line informing people to download the update from the website to be ready for launch. You wait. It's not going to be that big of a deal though. Last week the PS4 update server was fine, it was just PSN that was jacked up for about 5 hours. Expect something similar with the Xbox One launch. I'm sure you will get the update fine but logging into live, maybe not so smooth.
Well they are obviously confident in their ability to have the servers hold up. We'll just have to see how that plays out. Impossible to tell right now.The PS4 update was much smaller and an alternative (downloading through the website) was offered. This is going to have a lot more stress on the servers than the PS4's update.

I hope they hold up. It's just I have little faith in these things after we've had example after example show that launch servers are some of the most unreliable things out there.Well they are obviously confident in their ability to have the servers hold up. That file was never designed to replace the day one update. Its a recovery file in case something goes wrong. Instead of risking customers get themselves into a bad state by installing the file, we are going to troubleshoot on a case-by-case basis. It is not a replacement for the online update.

What poor planning.
he is telling you it wasn't an update alternative
If the update servers buckle on day one, how would one get the update now?
That's what I posted in the other thread. I was under the impression you couldn't even get to the settings menu without the day one update. Maybe we'll get one of the insiders in here to clarify, but I'm sure their hands are pretty full today to be posting on GAF.I was wondering if you can even get to the menu to find out which version your console has offline
but I suspect this was taken down due to some security issue

Missed Albert's post in here, thanks for clarifying!
Didn't Microsoft say they were going to have 300,000 servers or something? There is NO WAY there will be Live issues.
Note: I totally believe there will be Live issues.

What about the people in rural areas with no internet access, that like to play the single player campaigns in shooters?
Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet.

Are we still quoting shit from BEFORE THE DRM SWITCH!?
Initial set-up and some games and features require broadband internet

Wow MS REALLY wants you to connect to XBL at least once don't they?
Can you still download the update if you aren't an XBL Gold subscriber?
Or people were using the update incorrectly and patching the wrong version.
Thanks for the commentary though.
What about people who don't have access to the internet, and don't read up on this stuff? What if those rural parents just want to buy their children the newest system for christmas?
Tough shit. If you buy a console that needs Internet even briefly when you have no way to get 'net, nowhere to plug it in with 'net it is your own damned fault.
OMG, it needs electricity too, what about those rural parents without electricity?
Gamestop set up wifi for this reason, so take your Xbox One to the nearest one and wait 5 hours. If you bring it to my place then I'll charge you $20 for using my internet to update.
I wouldn't rely on that though. It's slow as fuck.I didn't know GameStop did that. That is pretty cool.
