Microsoft Removes Offline Day One Update From Website

Smart move. People are dumb. People will brick the system, then what?

Just because some people are dumb doesn't mean that an update alternative has to be totally removed. If you brick any system by not following instructions correctly, it's on you.

It seems they have more confidence in their servers on day one than they do on people being able to follow directions.

You wait. It's not going to be that big of a deal though. Last week the PS4 update server was fine, it was just PSN that was jacked up for about 5 hours. Expect something similar with the Xbox One launch. I'm sure you will get the update fine but logging into live, maybe not so smooth.
The PS4 update was much smaller and an alternative (downloading through the website) was offered. During the midnight release I went to the clerk even walked down the line informing people to download the update from the website to be ready for launch.

This is going to have a lot more stress on the servers than the PS4's update.

Well they are obviously confident in their ability to have the servers hold up. We'll just have to see how that plays out. Impossible to tell right now.

I demand a title update to avoid straight posting without reading OP

"Microsoft removes supposed Offline Update, because it wasn't"

I hope they hold up. It's just I have little faith in these things after we've had example after example show that launch servers are some of the most unreliable things out there.

That file was never designed to replace the day one update. Its a recovery file in case something goes wrong. Instead of risking customers get themselves into a bad state by installing the file, we are going to troubleshoot on a case-by-case basis. It is not a replacement for the online update.

Thanks for being so quick

Was there no way to ship discs to retail stores with the update on them?

Gamestop set up wifi for this reason, so take your Xbox One to the nearest one and wait 5 hours. If you bring it to my place then I'll charge you $20 for using my internet to update.

Call me stupid and/or ignorant, but why does it have to be formatted to NTFS? By default USB drives are formatted in FAT32. Unless my Mac immediately and invisibility formats them when I connect one for the first time.

I was wondering if you can even get to the menu to find out which version your console has offline

but I suspect this was taken down due to some security issue
That's what I posted in the other thread. I was under the impression you couldn't even get to the settings menu without the day one update. Maybe we'll get one of the insiders in here to clarify, but I'm sure their hands are pretty full today to be posting on GAF.

Missed Albert's post in here, thanks for clarifying!

Wow this is silly. They really should've spent some money printing the firmware to discs and distributing them to game shops. I mean, it would have cost them a hell of a lot of money but surely it's better than...Whatever this is.

You can, according to Microsoft support pages.

Didn't Microsoft say they were going to have 300,000 servers or something? There is NO WAY there will be Live issues.

Note: I totally believe there will be Live issues.

They said that was Azure IIRC. Azure isn't dedicated to Xbone and there is still a question as to whether those are real or virtual servers IIRC.

That sucks. I am not getting a XB1 right now, but if I was I would have liked to download the update in advance so I can start playing with it instead of having to wait an hour or two to download/install. Also, I am sure the servers will keep up with the demand since it is Microsoft, but who knows.

Hell, when I do eventually buy a XB1, i would like to go ahead and download the latest updates even when everything is up and running smoothly. The last thing I want to do when I get a new piece of hardware is watch a movie/tv show while the thing I just bought is unusable for a good amount of time.

I bet part of it is that MS wants to artificially beef up their XBL numbers, which means a bigger asking price for those dashboard ads.

I'm sure it drives them nuts that there are ~80 million 360s sold but only 46 million have signed up for Xbox Live (gold and silver).

I agree, considering the update is rumored to be about 1.3 gigs or something I imagine it's going to be a bit worse. I just think in this case MS thought about how stupid some people can be about following simple instructions they decided it's best to pull it.

I still think their update servers will be fine, it's just the login servers to live that I think are going to be fucked. No matter what it sucks for you peeps still stuck on DSL or something similar.

What about people who don't have access to the internet, and don't read up on this stuff? What if those rural parents just want to buy their children the newest system for christmas?

Tough shit. If you buy a console that needs Internet even briefly when you have no way to get 'net, nowhere to plug it in with 'net it is your own damned fault.

OMG, it needs electricity too, what about those rural parents without electricity?

I wonder, since it's a standard drive from iFixit's teardown, If you could pull out the drive, clone it and use those files that they had posted up there to boot to USB and install the updated OS.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
