Point n Click Adventure GAF 2013 The pixel hunt continues.

I don't care about "ruining" the game. I'm more interested in helping the dev improve the game in the case they're looking for feedback on bugs and whatnot.

Its great to see a classic series return (broken sword) shame there's not more of it happening...

What, other classic adventure game franchises?

Neverhood is getting a spiritual successor in Armikrog

new Myst type game from the same creators, Obduction

Dreamfall Chapters (and then maybe another Longest Journey after that)

new Tex Murphy game

new games from the people behind Gabriel Knights

I started The Longest Journey last night and played through the Prologue. Figured I should finally play through this one and Dreamfall since I did kickstart Dreamfall Chapters. I am liking it so far. It reminds me a bit of The Book of Unwritten Tales games.

Bought & completed the Shivah last night. Only took an hour, but then it was only $5.

Very interesting game. Inventory is barely used at all, 95% of the games puzzles rely on dialogue & information. Had fun with it.

Would love Gilbert to do a longer game in this vein someday

Also finished Shivah for the first time tonight and it took me around 2 hours or more to finish as one part in the game held me up, but yeah most of the game is dialogue based with barely any inventory puzzles. Really enjoyed it though. I've had good times with short PnC games lately.

Yay, just ordered a new laptop which should allow me to play adventure games again. It's been a while. Last one i played was Book of Unwritten Tales. I can't wait to have a browse through Steam to check up on the latest adventures. I think i'll start with Memoria since it looks interesting. Also very interested in the new Broken Sword.

Any other recommendations from the last couple of years that i need to check out?

Oh rock of ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still. Oh lady moon shine down, a little people magic if you will.
Just finished The Shivah, too. Took me a little over three hours.
This is the first time i've played a Wadjet Eye game, and one of the things that stood out the most was the writing. It's really well done. Great atmosphere as well.
There aren't a lot of them, but I really liked the puzzles.

Never heard the Duracell joke before, gotta remember that one.

Great game. :)

Too bad the steamachievements are broken, though. Or is that just me? Unlocked six or seven of them in-game, only four popped up on steam.

Ohh man, I would definitely recommend most of their other games. Especially Gemini Rue, Primordia and the Blackwell Games.

Dave Gilbert (head of Wadjet Eye, who made The Shivah) only helped with publishing and production on Gemini Rue and Primordia, but they're both amazing.

The Blackwell series on the other hand is done solely by Gilbert and is also great.

I want to like that game, but I bought it at GOG recently and thought it was pretty boring actually. To much time spent just going back and forth listening to people, and it was unclear where and when you actually could interact with something.

Plenty of other people seem to like it though.

I can understand that. I haven't finished it myself, but in my opinion it mainly stands up on its unique concept and art. The gameplay itself definitely suffers from either wandering around with no idea what to do or wandering around waiting for a specific time. There's a lot of empty space.

So I was thinking about playing Deponia after hearing good things on GAF, but after reading this RPS article I'm rethinking my stance... one of the few black characters in the game being forced to act like a monkey? "Funny" chinese accents? Misogyny abound? Are the creators stupid or are they trying to do the "this is offensive and therefore funny" thing and failing horribly?

Zaph

Member
The series didn't start off that offensive - apart from how offensively unfunny it is. The characters are unlikeable and the voice work poor.

I think the developers then attempted to remedy this by getting progressively more offensive in hopes if making it funnier and more mass appealing? I stopped playing the second one after the lead female character had her personality split three ways - a bitch, a bimbo and something else I can't remember - and you had to persuade each one using a different method.

Going by the third game's impressions, looks like I bailed not a moment too soon.

Deponia is pretty shit, the only reason to get into it is to see the great artstyle. Right from the get go i hated the game when Rufus was bitching about Toni. The puzzles are completely illogical, the main cast is unlikeable, the music is garbage and the game suffers from serious pacing issues. I previously said i would give it a 5 out of 10, I'm tempted to go even lower.

So much hate for Deponia here, hahaha. I on the other hand had exactly the opposite feelings you have. It's one of my favorite series and made me feel super connected to the main characters. The ending was super heavy for me and made me respect the developers very much.

Not much recently of high quality. Daedalic have released plenty of beautiful looking games with terrible dialogue, though if you speak german they may be worth a try, dunno how much is lost in translation there. The next year is going to be potentially amazing though, given the amount of industry veterans who have big games coming out:

Broken Sword 5
Broken Age
Tex Murphy : Tesla Effect
Blackwell Epihany
Shadowgate
Moebius

There's also Jack Houston and the Necronauts, Spaceventure & Quest for Infamy which may be good.

Thanks for the tips. Going to check them out. I tend to agree on the Daedalic adventures (or most adventure games coming from Germany in general) but i think i'll give Memoria a go. Primordia has always looked interesting so looking forward to checking it out too.

Very much looking forward to Broken Age and Broken Sword 5. I'll have to catch up on the others i don't know.

Also, for anyone interested, The Inner world is releasing on iOS (iPad and iPhone) on 27/11. Seems to be a decent adventure.

I'm only a handful of puzzles in, but The Inner World so far has pretty good writing, and excellent voice work. Good looking too :)

Deponia suffers from the same fundamental flaw plaguing most of today's adventure games; poor writing.

Tim Schafer, save us.

Best recent adventure game writing: The Blackwell series and the Ben and Dan games.

Otherwise, I agree.

I'm only a handful of puzzles in, but The Inner World so far has pretty good writing

Nah. I wanted the interminably long conversations to end shortly after starting this one.

The voice acting is pretty good for a German localization though.

About the end of the series:
Wasn't the ending just spectacular that you didn't see it coming that Rufus would sacrifice himself for Goal? Man, I'm going to miss Rufus, but what a man he was at the end. Wanted to get Goal to Elysium even if he couldn't go himself. ;__;

Moebius trailer. Lots of Cognition jank and bad VO - really hoping Jensen's writing will make it worthwhile.

Characters' models (their bodies) are bad. Main character's limbs are too thin and shoulders too wide, resulting in weird animations when he is moving his arms. VO didn't really bother me, I thought it was acceptable. However, why can't we have a good p&c adventure game with budget and production values like Beyond or Heavy Rain? :( It sucks that years ago PC adventure games were one of the genres that wowed people when it comes to graphics, and yet nowadays we either have beautiful 2D games or awkward looking 3D games.

I just hope that the script and puzzles are good.

Whatever happend to Toonstruck 2? Is it ever coming out, does anyone know?

The last time I read anything about that is that the people involved with it were waiting for some legal stuff to get taken care of, which was this past Summer, I think. I remember them saying that they wanted to re-release the first game before they do a sequel to get people interested again.

I played through the first game again earlier this year and it's still one of my all-time favorite adventure games. Hopefully everything gets sorted out for a re-release and sequel.

Yup, a common problem with P&C's (that will only get worse unless budget's grow) is that they aren't motion captured. We're increasingly becoming accustomed to seeing mo-cap in almost every action/adventure game (not just AAA ones) and even some with full performance capture, as a result we're becoming more sensitive to below-par animation.

If adventure games can't afford good animators, I really wish they'd go for strong art styles like the ones from German studios Animation Arts and Daedalic.

So in all fairness you could say 2014 could be the year when Toonstruck makes a comeback? I've been playing the game for the 1st time, the past month or two coming to the concluding part..must say some parts of it were REALLY fustrating, but after much persistence I got through them!

So far I've completed the curse of monkey island (again my 1st playthrough on that) about to complete Toonstruck, then I'll make my way over to Bladerunner (1st playthrough as well.) after that I plan to revisit Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword 2. Whilst also keeping a lookout for the feedback of Broken Sword 5!
